  6. TC is back! And honestly I feel like I’m with you on this. I’ve watched this happen, and it feels like we’re a bit quick going from “why, this LED lasts practically forever!“ to “we don’t need to consider replacing them“, I’ve seen it in car lighting and now it seems to move over into home lighting. It allows for some really neat designs you couldn’t have with bulbs, but it also creates more waste and makes it harder to fix stuff, which isn’t great. It’s a messy situation and I’m not sure what the best solution is, here.

  9. The easiest way to think about how gas discharge lights work is electrons of the atom re bumped up into a higher electron orbital. As they jump back down to their ground state they emit a photon of light at the wavelength directly proportional to the distance it jumped. The bluer the light the more energy the longer the jump. This is why you can't get gamma rays only up to Xrays using electrons there isn't a long enough jump for gamma rays. Also shorter paths have a limit and is why you don't see too far into the infra red. To go lower you need a wire where AC goes down: Hence a 1 meter antenna makes a wave length of 300MHz. The electron orbital acts as a nanometer length antenna.

  10. About load-sharing: I once wired my A/C condenser and outdoor hot-tub heater to the same 40A circuit, with a simple 24-volt two-pole relay in the condenser housing that gave it priority. The rationale, aside from saving a long run of 8-gauge copper, was that if it was hot enough to need the A/C, you wouldn't mind if the hot tub was a bit cooler.

  12. Soooo.... yeah I'll be that guy for this one... Boosting Engagement! I have a Carrier Infinity heat pump system, and it's the exception to the rule. It doesn't use the old school 4/5 wire setup, it's a serial data bus, and is variable speed on both the fan and the compressor motor. So turning it all the way up to 90 does in fact speed up both the circulation fan and the heat output. The damn thing sounds like a hurricane when it gets up to full speed. But most of the time it runs at a low speed and low compressor output so you don't even hear it running. But the motors in the compressor and air handler are driven by real PWM! Of course, it also means I have to use only Carrier stuff, I can't go just buy a thermostat at Home Depot, I have to use the $300 one Carrier sold me. Great video as always!

  13. I'm a young dude in my 20's, and frankly, I have no idea how my peers are ok with the lack of control we have with our technology. I don't like "black boxes", which is what I call any technology which I don't have even a passing understanding of, whether it be an algorithm for youtube videos, or the ABS brakes in my car. The only difference between those two, is that I can learn what makes the ABS brakes work. I can illuminate the black box, and then I will begin to trust it. Sure, I don't know exactly how the architecture of my PC's CPU is laid out, but I know enough about PC's to be able to both troubleshoot it if need be, and control what it does or doesn't do. I suppose the point I'm trying to get at, is that it's my firm belief that technology should be subservient to the user. It should not perform operations not called for, and too many things these days do just that, with no way for the user to peer in and control it. I don't like it when my phone tries to automatically restart or update without my permission. I don't like it when cars drive without driver input. I don't like it when phone apps start sharing information without my knowledge. I don't like it when the GPS tells me to take a different route. Perhaps I'm a contrarian, a hipster, a technophobe, whatever, but gosh darn it, our species has the most advanced brain known to us, and we're trying to use it as LITTLE as possible?! Outsource our thinking?! Return to monke?!

  18. I wonder if you digitally recorded audio on vinyl and recorded of 1 and 0 of an mp3. I wonder how long would the recording last per one side of a 33.3 and at what highest bitrate? Considering that you could tighten the groove margins considerably since only 2 states would be needed and 2 states isn't practical to pickup with coils so light would be better so you would get a laser to look at the grooves, black is impractical so better to use sliver and oooooh.

I love my Carrier Infinity Variable Speed Heat Pump... tied to Home Assistant, it knows how much solar I am producing, what billing tier I am in with SDGE, the forecasted weather, and if there is a flex alert or not (request to conserve energy) and can do exactly what you are talking about! I live in the future!

  25. The issue with filtering variable frequencies is that the bandwidth of an L-C filter (the simplest kind, and what old radio sets used) is proportional to its resonant frequency. The AM broadcast band traditionally ran from 540 to 1600 kHz — that's about a factor of three. So the selectivity of a pre-superhet set varied by a factor of three: at the low end of the band, audio quality suffered because the high frequencies (which in AM are further from the center of the signal) got cut out. At the high end, selectivity suffered and the set would tend to pick up multiple stations at once. That was the main problem the superhet solved: the selectivity of the set no longer depends on the frequency being tuned. The fact that every superhet receiver is also a weak transmitter was (and probably still is) used by the British to detect unlicensed TV sets. (Yes,*receivers* are licensed in the UK; the license fees are how the BBC is funded.)

  36. Sigh. Our central AC died last year and I would have loved to replace it with a heat pump but based on everything you've said it sounds like it probably won't be doable right now. The house is 132 years old and has exposed brick in a couple of rooms. In order to insulate it properly we'd probably have to renovate the entire thing. And the upfront cost is just... phew. Funny enough our neighbors got a heat pump last year, one of the Carrier mini splits, and all he had to say about it was "we overpaid". I'll have to really crunch the numbers and make sure, but dang, I'm disappointed. Not by you, just by reality, as usual - this is exactly the kind of info I needed right now and I thank you for all of your efforts here 💙

Particularly fond of the ole Fisher-Price PXL-2000s, we have a couple of them (complete with the matching monitors.) Oh, and I must say we LOVE your channel.   40. Hot take: the profit motive drives oversizing. A 3 ton unit costs more than a 2 ton unit. So if they make 10% profit regardless, they make more on the larger units. We need to regulate and innovate and incentivize things better. It would be a data/privacy concern, but you could have it where contractors could submit the floorplan and relevant information for a load calc to some agency(EPA? Idk) and get a tax break if they show things were properly calculated. We also need to maintain/increase tax breaks on heat pumps and all modern inventions that innovate and improve efficiency. A limit on profit would go a long ways too. I’ve heard the phrase “feast or famine” to describe points of high and low business. Sometimes there’s too much work, sometimes not enough. But the pricing is kept high so they survive the downturns. And while that is hypothetically fine, many, MANY jack up their prices beyond reason because of this, as well as because of the tax credits. There needs to be more oversight to protect the consumer. And to improve the functioning of our infrastructure. We all know what happens when you cheap out and price gouge on infrastructure… well, homes and hvac certainly count in my book. All thoughts are welcome and I can’t wait to read them.

  41. I have two of these, one manual and one electric. I absolutely love them, having been introduced to the concept when I worked in France for a few months back in 1996. ANYway: with both manual and electric, I have encountered certain cans that are very difficult to open with these tools. Common denominator: they have all been canned fish or shellfish (e.g. clams). But with a little extra effort, the wheel blade eventually pushes through and Bob's your uncle.

  42. The only thing those lights remind me of every year is the fact that they flicker at gird frequency I can even see it on camera (30fps, what shutter speed did you use?). So annoying... I wish every LED light manufacturer, no matter what kind of light, would put a "FULL BRIDG ERECTIFIUH" on top of the circuit

That aside, I find your put downs of Linux outrageous, Alec – in fact I've seen many predictions that 2020 is the year of the Linux desktop, so I think you'll soon regret sticking with your obsolete Win*doze* computer when you could be switching to Linux with an extra time commitment of only a few hundred hours per month.   47. I'm glad I'm not crazy when it comes to this topic! A friend of mine recently moved out to where I live (A suburb of Phoenix), and his apartment stays way, way cooler than my house despite them both being built within the last 4 years. The main difference I've noticed is every single outward facing window on his apartment has an awning. Awnings on homes out here, at least newer homes, is basically unheard of, but I really think they should be more common.
