It should be noted that the lower west side of Manhattan was not a major office or residential center but full of factories and warehouses and it was also alongside the Hudson River piers where ocean going freight ships were docked and unloaded and reloaded. This was the age of break bulk cargo ships that were serviced by shipboard cranes that served the cargo holds, not the container vessels we see today. Most all of these piers are gone or found other uses. Manhattan is no longer a port city. The sixties saw the development of the world trade center and the area changed from industrial to offices and added a lot of housing units as well. Some of these neighborhoods have become quite upscale. The area also saw the demise of the West Shore highway that carried vehicle traffic down as far as the battery at the south end of Manhattan, the closure of this route meant that cars and trucks had to use the Avenues with traffic lights on each cross street, this of course accelerated the movement out of the area of industrial facilities as well. The decline of the NYCentral RR, later merged into PennCentral was also a factor in the decline of the high line.

  5. When I was a kid in the 70s we’d take the Tri-Borough bridge to Queens to see my grandfather. On the way we’d see GG1s electric trains crossing the Hells Gate Bridge. What a sight it was. Probably one of the most foreboding bridges I’d ever seen.

  8. This is very nostalgic for me. I grew up a few blocks from Coney in Brighton Beach in the 50’s & 60’s. Steeplechase Park was great. You didn’t mention the Parachute jump whose skeleton still stands today as a monument to the great old days. I had many friends who lived in the gated community at the western tip, Sea Gate. But other things that attract people are Nathan’s Famous and the Brooklyn Cyclones baseball team. And obviously the beautiful beach, ocean and boardwalk that are unique to NYC. I think your title is a little clickbait, as Coney Island hasn’t had that corruption for 90 years. But great video.

  13. Vividly recall using the pedtunnel at Wilton place and Hollywood blvd often in the 1960/70's. I can still hear the echo of my footsteps reverberating off the walls and changing pitch via the 'doppler effect' as I made my way from one end to the other. Being that these tunnels provided some security, the less fortunate of the times would often urinate, deficate, and yes, even vomit in seclusion resulting in not only the rancid odor and accompanying rivers and cumulative pools of waste but the added exersize of leap frogging across them in hopes of getting out on the other side with dry shoes.

Sinkholes are NOT covered by homeowners insurance! 😢One would have to purchase a separate rider, like windstorm (hurricane) insurance. 😩And, would probably have to have a geologist use ground penetrating radar to assess risk; 😮I asked when I bought my central Florida home!🤔🤣 One of the most famous sinkholes is at the Corvette Museum I. Bowling Green, KY;. The collapse swallowed 8(?) Vettes; some were recovered, some totaled!! The museum has a display on it, including the cars rescued.

  17. In the 1960s we used to use the Holland Tunnel a lot. As part of the route from our home in New Jersey to Family in Brooklyn. By the mid-60s the Verrazzano-Narrows bridge was completed and we no longer used the tunnel. It was a very weird experience to a little boy to go through the tunnel and I always wondered what the phone booth boxes were for. Until my Father explained that they used to have policemen manning them in case of trouble.

  20. I'd love to see more West Coast history stories. I have lived in Washington state my whole life and there may not be as much stuff as the east coast but you would be surprised about how far back our history goes.

  21. This bridge has special meaning to me. Being raised about 4 miles away in NJ. My grandfather on my father’s side was a blasting and sandhog worker. He worked drilling and blasting the NJ cable anchorage into the solid rock of the palisades in Ft Lee several hundred feet down. The Manhattan side is anchored by a huge monolithic pour of concrete. Being held in place by only massive weight. My grandfather also worked on the Holland tunnel and the Catskill water aqueduct.

  22. Great video, I majored in Physics (1980s) and remember a single reference to this facility, a photo and one line of text. Always struck me how much the containment chamber resembled a hot air balloon or a light bulb. Nice to have more information.

Thank you for your history of the Cliff House and as a native of San Francisco that I did not knew that Sutro own the Cliff house since he had his home right above the cliff bluff from the Cliff House, as he also started the Sutro Baths that burn down in 1966. And also the Sutro Railroad which he started his own Steam Train line to Central and California in which it was called, and still running as the Ferries, and Cliff Railway aka the Powell Street, and Jackson Cable cars, and then later in 1905 made a Streetcar line to the baths to in which the right of way is still there next to the Visitor's Center. as it was the #1 California, and 2 Clement Streetcar line then turn into a Trolley, and Diesel Bus line.   24. I’m 35 and I’ve been a Chicagoan all my life. My mother has only been a driver since I was 5 and was afraid to take expressways for a few years after that. So when she finally did get acquainted with the highways, she avoided toll roads like the plague because “Why pay to drive on the expressway when I can just get there without paying?” So naturally, I grew up with the same mentality and avoided toll roads at all costs. It wasn’t until I started my current job 12 years ago that they started sending me to far away places in the company car on the companies dime and I would have to take the quickest and most efficient route to get there that I started frequently taking toll roads. With this I discovered the Oasis. I absolutely loved these, because on long trips I can drop in for lunch or for a reliable, clean, and plentiful washroom break. And what he didn’t mention in the video is that they’re mostly mirrored inside! No matter which side you came in on, inbound or outbound, the same restaurants on this side are on that side and there are washrooms on both ends so you don’t have to walk a ways to get what you want from an Oasis for most of the restaurants. Some were only on one side, but you probably had more time to kill if you were going there anyway. So sad to see them disappearing like this, they were a real treat for my long work drives.

  32. Thank you, Ryan, for all the history. I knew about the cars, I knew about line and trestle, but I didn't know all of that... As someone who really likes trains and train history, I really appreciate it. You know, I think we got some of those old metro cars around here. I believe those are the same class of chicago metro cars that I got to ride in a time two. I believe they're the same type as the one's Iowa Interstate bought for their IAIS 6988 & IAIS 7081 2-10-2 "Santa Fe" Chinese steam locomotive... I went for a ride in them a couple of times back in 2011 once round trip at Rock Island Train Fest, Rock Island, IL to Walcott, IA I believe and once at Planes Trains and Automobiles, fest. Geneseo, round trip from Geneseo, IL to Annawan, IL. I'm not sure if they're still making any runs with those old locomotives or not. 🤔 I think they are, I'm gonna have to look it up. I would sure love to go on another ride sometime. I wish they'd still have that trained festival in Rock Island, that was a one time in history awesome amazing event.

  33. Coming from a point of experience. I can explain the tunnels in one paragraph right now. Anyone who has done any underground work in the city of Chicago since the early 90s knows. Look up the great Chicago flood. The tunnels were first produced to move goods and supplies around downtown. Now the tunnels are used to run electrical, plumbing, in some areas is use to run steam pipes to office buildings. These tunnels also run under the Chicago River. They were replacing pylons and they broke into one of the tunnels, which produced the great Chicago flood

  37. I live right by Dearborn Station. You should do a show on it. The Tower is off limits but if you can get in it's friggin amazing. Fire wescapes up several stories to an upper level with a little work house. An ex GF charmed the maintenance guy to show us back in 2016.

  38. Moved to Matawan Exit 117 in 1963. At the time they had no exit toll. Raritan you paid both ways 25 cents. Moved to Holmdel Exit 114 in 1970 & they did have a ten cent exit toll. But it wasn’t manned & the kids that lived near it used to put a paper plate in the basket. The other thing was if you got off at the Arts Center exit you could come in the back way to town. Right next to the old police station & town hall.

  44. i fear for it. NYC has torn down incredible buildings before. mind you, they keep building incredible buildings however some take time to find their way into a persons heart. Once they do, no one wants them demolished. I love the Flatiron. it needs to stay. Some buildings just can't replace the uniqueness of what already exists.

  45. If this is in regards to our abandoned station, oh do we have a lot. On the original IRT route/on the first official subway line, 91st, 18th, Worth and the original City Hall stations are abandoned and are all in pretty good shape still albeit w/ a lot of graffiti. City Hall station hasn't been tagged up thank goodness. When I was a kid, 91st street's lights were always on though a bit dim. At the end of the 90s, it was still on for sure, 00's it was also on because they were storing stuff there when they built the new (at the time) 96th street entrance. With growing numbers of riders, the train cars grew in number and length. City Hall was too curvy...gap distance too long. The other stations were just pointless to be extended due to being too close to others. Fun Fact - you can see where the 91st street entrance was (it's now an emergency hatch on the right hand side of 91st and Broadway). The City Hall entrance is still standing, though the fancy kiosk is now just a regular ass entrance. To see it you have to look through the gates. The Subway globe has a red emergency light now. All of the skylights are there iirc (it's been a decade since I checked). You can't see in the station of course, but they are still there. Just look at the ground around City Hall for glass blocks on the floor. For other abandoned stations, again we have a lot but I live off the IRT line so that's the only one i've looked into since I was a kid. Oh yeah, stay on the downtown 6 train to get a sight of the City Hall station for yourself. If you're brave enough, stand in between cars but hold on tight because that curve has a lean to it....actually nvm don't do it just stay inside lol.

  46. From Wisconsin and from a big family of 7 kids with 2 parents. When i was little this place was so magical. I have gone few times in my adult years showing others it. So excited for my daughter to get older to share this place with her. Such a great place and takes hours to get through. Great video to shine light on such a odd place
