It is really refreshing to listen logical arguments. This is very rare in our time of doublespeach.

The Russian economy was driven by raw material exports and now it is driven ny governmet spendings as long as there are savings able to spend. When the national fund is empty, Russia is bancrupt.

Two years ago 70% of casualties were from artillery. IF the 85% drone casualties are correct it is a huge chane in warfare.
22
India never would agree a common currency with China.
20
Russias biggest poroblem is demographics. In the moment The ethnic Russians are the minority in the Federation it will be a different country.
17
I still talk with Russians near Krasnodar and cannot agree with your simple view about Russian society. Behind the curtain there is much more diversity than it seems. In the moment the Tzar will lose power you will see that Russia is not a uniform society, it will fall into many different countries.
15
@Notrusbot yes, but Russia still has the same mindset. In the 18th century imperialism was normal but most countries have given up this ideology.
13
Only one wrong decision could cost freedom. In Germany we voted in 1933 the wrong candidate who promised work for everybody.....and he kept the promise. Everybody got a job in the army.
11
The more intelligent Russians know very well how bad "a Tsar" is. But nevertheless many are loyal to the government as some think it is patriotic. But I am not Russian, I just know Russians from Yakutia.
10
it is an oversimplification to say labour shortage is a function of salleries. This might work for low skilled jobs. But if you have not enough medical doctors you can pay as much as you want. The Universities willl not be able to deliver more doctors in the next 5 years. To increase the capacity of the universities is a long term project.
10
I totally agree. I had a similar experience in Lviv. I bought a Pizza and did not the price correctly and payed 10 times more and felt it was cheap and left. Then the seller sent his kid to find me and gave back the change.
9
That is not sure. Macron lost in the last election and is now weak, but Germany has election in January or February and the new chancelor Merz is much more against Putin than Scholz. In opposite to the USA the polls in Germany are aalways very accurate.
9
My daughter has Russian woman in her department. She is working very hard but at the same time she is distributing Russian propaganda.
9
@DominicFlynn nothing will happen with Finland because Finnland does not buy Russian gas.
8
What are you talking about? I had to learn the 3.Reich history in School for 8 years. In such details nobody in America even can imagine. But the conclusion people take from history is very different. Many in Germany refuse everything that is conected to military and think it is better to surrender than fight again such a terrible war.
6
The Ruble to Yuan is almost idebmntical to the dollar exchange.
6
In my town I pay around 4 Euro per kg for potato and 6 Euro for chicken. The time when potatoes were cheap is over.
6
I also started working in a factory with 15 years old for 4 years, and I hated the job. I never want to go back.
6
The problem with game theory is that you need rational participants. I think Putin is a rational player but there is a small chance that the next leader is more irrational. Anyway, we in the West better do not care about nuklear threats, because the mutual deterance worke since 80 years. To be scared brings instability to the balance of power and increase the risk to lose everything. The only alternative is to surrender if we give up the mutual deterance.
6
There is no reason to be scared. USA has delivered 30% of the weapons used in Ukraine. At the beginning of the war this was essential. Meanwhile Europe produce more than 3 times more 155mm artillery shells than the USA and Ukraine also produce big quantities.
6
Same stories I heard from my father born in 1912. After ww1 it was even worse. But in the 18th century it was the opposite. That time towns stored grain for their citizens and on bad years people on countryside starved even more.
6
I am often in Krakov and its one of the most beautiful towns in Poland after Wrozlaw/Breslau. But to be fair there are also poorer regions. Of course not as poor as in Russia. Yakutia or Buratia are more comparible to Simbabwe. By the way potatoes increased about 300% in Russia the last two years.
6
The USA has certainly not more than half of the industrial power of China. Most GDP in the USA is based on consumption and financial markets.
6
Karl-Heinz Deschner wrote a book "Criminal history of Cristianity" this are almost 10000 pages and 100 000 sources of cruelties the catholic church is responsible. No evel is not exceptions in the church, is the rule. The basic of any religion is to strengthen bounds within the comunity and declare all others as bad.
6
Total bs. Only peope never worked in industry companies could come to such a weired idea. Even if it would work and USA would manufacture more it would reduce the living standard dramatically. Assume the USA put 100% tariffs on shoes. It means Niki can pay an US worker $ 2 instead of $ 1 per hour in Bangla Desh to have the same profit. How many worker you will find in the USA working for that money while Niki has to increase the price anyway.
5
The Ruble decline is certainly a strong indicator of the Russian economy, but since the teade volume is small we should not overestimate the figures. The tremendous inflation figures seems to me the better picture of the situation. Inflation rates cannot be manipulated that easy. I mean not the Rostat data but the price in the super market.
5
How do you come to the ridiculous idea that Ukrainian and Russian language is the same? I speak some Russian but do not understand any Ukrainian.
5
With the current president for sure not.
5
It is not difficult to be better than Zeihan.
4
You should not take every tweet from Trump serious. In two days he has forgotten what he posted.
4
Natural gas is not anymore profitaable for Russia. Gazprom has a deficit ot billions of dollars. Oil is the main income for Russia.
4
You don't need a license to grow anything, only to sell it.
4
Real economies have nothing to do with computer games. They are much more complex. Scaling up production is what China does well but it is a risky strategy. In the moment somebody find a better product all the investment to scale up production is lost.
4
The tariffs will lead to a recession and this brings oil price down.
4
The informations about the Rubl is very confusing and so I am really thankful to hear your exprtise that shows the trend.
4
Venezuela has much bigger oil resources than Russia and exploration is much cheaper than in permafrost regions.
4
@Ls151000 I know that for Ukrainians it is easy to understand Russian, but for a foreigner the laguage is very different. Actutually Ukrainian is much more related to Polish than to Russian.
4
Obviously you never was in Russia otherwise you would not talk such bs. The only field Russia is great is corruption.
3
Why do you care?
3
Rostat publised Gold reserves between 300 and 1700 tons. For a privat person it is a nice wealth but for a country it is nothing. It last to finance the war for 2 month. By the way in December Russia sold 100 tons.
3
@lightworker2956 how do you come to the weired idea that Russia is winning in Ukraine? The twice as big (in menpower ) USSR lost against the much smaller Afghanistan despite they had occupied the whole country. Germany finally lost ww2 despite it could occupy the whole Ukraine within 3 weeks and also the most populated part of Russia. Gaining a few villages does not say anything about the result of a war. Even if you look at PPP Russia is still tiny economy. There is no industrial basis beside mining, oil and weapon production. Russia spend already 35% of its budget for the military, while the USA has donated 0.01 % of its GDP to Ukraine. Alone for the Iraq war the USA spent 15 times more than for the war in Ukraine. There is no will to win otherwise it would be very easy to defeat Russia.
3
Only in summertime it is great. Now it is often rainig or snowing. I often travel to Ukraine and have a pause in Krakov a wonderful town.
3
Why should a lower Ruble collapse Russia. It simply increase the inflation. This hurts low income people but it increase the chance that more conscript to the army. Look at North Korea. Despite famen the state is stable.
3
Trump caused the bigest debt increase in history in his first term, I have no daubt he can beat his own record.
3
So finally Trump support Ukraine by sending the USA into recession and bring this way oil price down.
3
I admired your economic explanations, bit please stop telling ninsense about biochemistry and let this field the experts.
3
You missed one point. If Trump is elected, he will liften all sactions and give back Russia the frozen assets and he will force Europe to stop military aid for Ukraine, at least this is the plan of his vice president. You are totally right that Trump has not won the election and polls are notorious wrong.
3
I was missing an explanation why the Economist write bs? Usually the owner determine the content direction.
3
In our days only a smal part of the tranactions are done by cash. To have a significant effect the central bank must be hacked.
3
@abodabalo economists predicted since a long time that Trump will dump the economy. Mark is right, tariffs are sanctions on the own country. In the long term it makes the country less competitive and poorer.
