All of a sudden, obsolete fighters can be brought back into service as loyal wingmen. We can build older fighters on the cheap.

Basically the Air Force figured out how to make a B52 into a stealth bomber back in 1990.
148
Having some features less the expensive paint to reduce RCS is an improvement. It would give pilots a few extra seconds to engage targets. At least that R&D did not go to waste.
61
This is not the worst idea I have heard. An F35A with twin engines would be sweet.
17
Call it the Jedi pod.
16
A drone carrier is a great idea on paper. However they need lots of them with a lot of anti air defenses. One strike on a carrier and how are the drones going to be controlled?
16
Purchasing is fine. South Korea and Japan do the same. Stealing tech is where I have issues.
15
Whoever thought up twin twisting nozzle to make a 90 degree bend was a genius.

The US Navy should just stick with the modified oil tankers with landing decks for resupply and add in missile pods similar to Rapid Dragon and allow them to launch vertically or load quickly on Ospreys.
6
So we can see lots of derping.
6
Now I would like to see Boeing do an F15 test aircraft with SU57 shaped wings and YF23 rear control surfaces. It would essentially be an F16 XL version of the F15. Call it the EX3.
5
45 aircraft is a lot of planes. I bet any adversary forgot about them and only counted the F22 and F35. Big mistake.
4
More after sales maintenance revenue for Lockheed.
4
The issue was not the missile. The issue was the balloon was given the opportunity go survey the entirety of North America before it was shot down. We knew it was coming when it was over Alaska.
3
If a plane made the cut to have a Macross Valkyrie equivalent, it ascended to cool status.
3
It may not be anti-gravity as much as some game changing discovery of something fundamental about our physical laws that has real world applications.
3
The better question is where do I sign up? I can keep secrets, work odd hours and would like to get paid to recover alien aircraft.
3
The Air Force could saturate an air space with reverse stealth: make a small cheap drone have as large of a radar signature as possible. Let them draw in as many air defenses as possible to deplete them or expose them for anti-radiation weapons to target.
3
How small can this type of engine be produced and how efficient can they be? I would love to see if this engine can be used as a compact turbine generator using alternative fuels.
2
Let's hope Microsoft's AI does not get its proverbial hands on this F16 or we will witness the birth of Skynet.
2
Demilitarized can mean we slap some outrageous sensors on the F117 and it will light up targets for cruise missiles and other air Force aircraft.
2
What is it about the Swedes that they can come up with planes and subs that can punch above their weight?
2
It will be really Meta if these drones mimic F35 signatures so the enemy will think the smaller RCS are the high value stealth fighter targets.
2
Not gonna lie. If the US military told us our tax dollars was going towards power armor research, I would be impressed.
2
The real life Macross VF-171.
2
My head canon is the SU-57 is the YF-23 evolved.
2
The Air Force just tried to Urbanmech an F-16.

The F35A is a bargain compared to the Rafale or F15ex plane for plane. But they are for very different purposes so that fact needs to be taken into consideration. The F35 would take out air defenses so the bulk of the air force can do most of the shooting.
1
This thing looks like the YF23 navy prototype.
1
Ironically, it is the 2nd Amendment that would deter a drone attack. The moment the first drones hit, the armed citizenry would be obligated to defend against any suspicious drones that are carrying payloads. Who stopped the airplane from hitting the Pentagon during 9/11 after the first plane hit the World Trade Center? It was the people.
1
Japan could have purchased the Korean fighter and had Lockheed apply the stealth coating. The shape is nearly identical to the F22 and probably could achieve 90% at a fraction of the cost.
1
I suspect a lot of the B21 was recycled from the B2 and the new tech is on the inside of the plane.
1
NORAD dispelled the claim of previous balloons.
1
The F35 was meant to dominate a war, not win a battle. Their job is to take out anti-air assets so the non stealth fighters can dominate the skies with impunity.
1
Looks like the YF-23 is finally going to get an update.
1
We have practical experience that air superiority and by extension having people piloting planes are still relevant in 21st century warfare. The only way this might change would be space doninance.
1
America does not want to encourage piracy. Not only is it against the freedom of navigation doctrine, there will be collateral damage that will alienate US allies. Remember China supports Iranian proxies efforts and even their own ships were attacked and seized.
1
Looks like we can't laugh at $10k toilet seats unless we get the full story now.
1
Water is wet. The SR-71 is much faster than what the Air Force or CIA tells us.
1
An AI pilot would allow older fighters to be reused. They can handle high G maneuvers and nobody will shed a tear if they crash or get shot down.
1
Imagine Broncos and Wathogs with AI.
1
My guess is he told the actual numbers and that information was classified. Oops.
1
I thought this was the whole point of Rapid Dragon to use cargo planes to drop a large amount of cruise missiles which are essentially one use drones.
1
Glad you did not call that Ukraine and Israel funding bill as an immigration bill like the mainstream media.
1
If I am understanding what is going on, the pod sends a counter radar wave inverse to the wave going back to the receiver. If so, this would be ingenious.
1
The A10 did the same thing.
1
I would cannibalize the block 20 jets for the block 35. If they can not fight and poorly trains pilots, they are not worth their cost to keep running.
1
Russia did not lose tanks and vehicles, they "transferred" most of them to the Ukrainians.
1
It was not a bad idea to buy the tech of the Russian stealth competitors. They did not need it anyways.
1
Why not utilize existing factory lines and just build a cheaper stripped down F35A?
