Hoffman in "Why Did Europe Conquer The World?", Mughal empire had difficulties to compete in advanced weaponry because they couldn't raise taxes as much as the British (and other European countries in general). High taxes were the norm in Europe, while in Mughal empire, they had to depend on their local lords and chieftains (who had became stronger as Mughal rulers became increasingly weaker prior to British arrival) for their tax revenues. It resulted in Mughal empire couldn't effectively invested in better weapons and raised army to fight British encroachment into their realm. And finally they themselves had to fell into submission before British empire.

Aside of Ethiopia, those other countries were vassal of Ottoman (even if in name only), and the aim of taking down Northern African countries was initially to remove the menace of Barbary pirates who acknowledged Ottoman as their overlord. It was true and true conquest at that point, not the step by step procedural as described in Berlin Conference.

  13.  @scotttracy9333  It a matter of human resources. The north had as much as three (or four?) times more population than the south. The south advantage of fighting at home can be seen by the northerners higher total casualties of 1.5 times that of southerners. However, as one southerner population is a third that of northerner, only able to inflict 1.5 northerner casualties for each southerner casualties wouldn't cut it. It became a war of attrition by the north, where the south exhausted their available bodies first. And of course, Sherman march through the south was an example of the disadvantage of fighting at home. Southerner's home front was devastated by the war while the northerner's home was intact.

  14. Sultanate of Aceh was ended at 1903 and it never regained their kingdom. What remain was resistance against pretty much anybody whoever claimed their land. The resistance continued up until the devastation of tsunami of 2004, when they finally gave up and agreed to join Indonesia in return of wide autonomy of democratically elected representative (hence no sultanate rebirth).

By treaty of Breda (1667) the Dutch and English agreed to divide their sphere of conquest, which forbid the English from expanding into the archipelago. To that effect, they traded an island where the English had already conquered there with Dutch colony of New Amsterdam (later renamed as New York, a.k.a. whatta trade). Up until late 19th century, that the Dutch was satisfied with the arrangement. What changed then was the Scramble For Africa, with the new craze of colonization that followed. It had the Dutch worried about their colonial possession that they started to conquer every single sultanates in the archipelago, hence their conquest of Aceh.

The emperor at Constantinople could not muster a respectable army and left the cities in Anatolia to raise their own army.   47. The church split because the decline of Roman empire. Before the decline, the western and eastern church was connected by Pax Romana and the authority rested to the patriarch at Byzantine No matter what kind of schism between Rome and Byzantine, the Roman empire could force and mold them. After the decline, there was a wide area between eastern and western church, which until High Middle Ages was populated by pagan tribes, i.e. the Balkans. Not to mention that "barbarians" invaded Rome several times, reducing its population to less than 50,000 (from its height of 1 million). Separated from their main source of support, the western church had to manage to survive by themselves, including creating their own version of Roman Empire. The result of that was the sense of authority to challenge the patriarch in Byzantine.
