@amienabled6665 Don't compare population growth of 16th century with today's growth which helped by modern medical knowledge and abundance of food. Alright, it might not took 1000 years, but it would took centuries to recover.

@papajoe4769 Yes, but no. Bulgaria was greedy. While others were content with their gains after their First Balkan War, Bulgaria still wanted more. They even tried to put Serbia against Greece in peace conference, hoping they could get something out of it.
1
@skelet8337 Romania had demanded Dobruja long before the First Balkan War. It's stupid for Bulgaria to ignore Romania and instead put their entire army against Serbia and Greece. Of course Romania watched those development (insert Mr. Burns meme here) and rubbing their hand, "Excellent."

Strength. Byzantine was still an empire at 8th century. It had turned into a city state by the mid 15th century. Byzantine still able to field several tens of thousands of soldiers in 8th century. By the mid 15th century, they only had one thousand, that's it, just one thousand against several hundred thousand of Ottoman's. It's like the clownish thief who stab dying Dagoth at the end of "Conan the Destroyer". And ooooooo .. how the Turks are proud of it. So very very proud. Whatta accomplishment. Conqueror of Byzantine yo.

It helped when the better positioned Czech initiated the divorce process. If Slovakia initiated it, the country could became another Yugoslavia.
1
@zdenekdupal6479 Newspapers on my country at the time said it was initiated by the Czech, and they speculated about the reason the Czech voluntarily let a part of their country break away.

The church split because the decline of Roman empire. Before the decline, the western and eastern church was connected by Pax Romana and the authority rested to the patriarch at Byzantine. After the decline, there was a wide gulf between eastern and western church, namely the Balkans. Until High Middle Ages, the area was populated by pagan tribes. Not to mention that "barbarians" invaded Rome several times, reducing its population to less than 50,000 (from its height of 1 million). Separated from their main source of support, the western church had to manage to survive by themselves, including creating their own version of Roman Empire. The result of that was the sense of authority to challenge the patriarch in Byzantine.
