That aside, the penalties need to be tough else too many selfish far right morons would be flouting the rules and undermining the battle against major outbreaks. That's why the new pandemic laws in some form must past. It's a no brainer.

  9. Yes, the data says locking down was the correct policy. Australia has done well, New Zealand even better. Not locking down would be tragic. Delays in medical treatment are probably due to mismanagement, not the lock-downs e.g. why would an oncology dept close because ICUs are in demand? No good reason. On the age thing... so what if most of the Covid-19 deaths are in the older age groups?... They died of Covid-19, right? Are worth less when they're 70? Many people in their 70's will live for a decade or two or more, but hey, they're old so we shouldn't care, right? Something wrong with that logic.

  12. Cost is unavoidable in a disaster. With no vaccines and no effective treatments, there was always going to be significant cost, in monetary and health terns. The hard part is finding a balance. How much death and disease is ethical given most most of it is avoidable? Too many countries got it wrong. The US being an obvious example of failure. The US heading for a million dead over coming months and unimaginable needless suffering - that's shameful. It's no different than flood, fire, storm or earthquake... there is cost, there is damage, there is injury, there is death. No way cost can be avoided. Given the death toll in Australia is minuscule by international standards, I applaud our governments for a job well done, and done under difficult circumstances.

  13. I believe you may have misheard.... Bret said Trump is a "symptom" of the corruption. By that I believe Bret means Trump didn't cause the corruption but people supported him out of distain for the corrupt status quo I.e. the swamp. That's my interpretation for what it's worth.

  20. Let's have a better discussion around the devastation that would come from not locking down. Conservatives love to focus on the negatives of the lockdowns while glossing over the tragic devastation caused by covid-19. This video yet again brings into focus the failings of the conservative argument. Sorry to say it, but the left are winning the 'covid debate'. Australia is a far better place to be right now for most people than pretty much anywhere else on the plsnet. The difference is due to the effective lockdown strategy. Would you really want to be in the UK right now with daily cases heading toward 100k? Yes, one can laugh but I don't find it funny.

  26. A lot of the so called "hatred" is likely due to (1) having been force fed these fables (as I see them) and (2) the psycological damage done by believing them. This I know is true of many and it's precisely my experience. This man (WLC) is still telling these stories as if they were a true historical record and not fables. This shocks me. I was indoctrinated as a child but I figured out years ago that it was a fantasy. The emotional reaction could be described as "hate" but if it is hate, it's hatred if the deception and the years lost living a kind of a dream devoid of reality.

  29. Australia is doing a way better job of handling the pandemic than most other countries. Wearing asks during a pandemic makes sense. Same as seatbelts in cars or helmets on motorcycles etc. It's not rocket science.

  40. I worked 20 years in trades (in factories mostly) then 20 years in offices, and due to the pandemic, now doing zoom calls and working from home. I've seen both sides. I'm sure many have. As well, my grandfather was a farmer. I spent a lot of time on the farm as a kid. I saw how hard was.

  41. Why does it matter? There has been international cooperation between research labs for years and it's ongoing. US researchers have even visited the Wuhan lab (and other labs) for the purpose of sharing. Of course tinfoil hat wearers will always read more into these things.

  42. Instead of talking about suicide as if it's an inevitable result of taking reasonable precautions... why not talk about solutions? There doesn't have to be a tradeoff. Fix both or at least try. And as an example of how wrong this commentator was... we have vaccines. Locking down was the right approach. It bought us time and saved very many lives.

  45. I'll have to disagree with pretty much everything said. Children may have to pay but they are also the beneficiaries by not having lost their lives or their parents or their grandparents. How many would have been orphaned if we'd just let the pandemic run wild? Fact is we don't know. The financial cost would be enormous whichever way we went. We've seen that elsewhere. Our governments took the most ethical approach and I thank them for it. It's shamefull that other wealthy nations didn't follow. Health is wealth. Hopefully we've learned to be more careful of our health, our greatest asset. No more sick people in workplaces spreading it around is a good start.

  46. Trust in government backed currency is not 'faith'. We use cash every day. Millions of transactions occur daily via cash or electronically. I have good reason to believe a $5 note will buy me $5 of goods. The behavior of money is reinforced daily by tangible evidence. It works. Faith in god is blind. Faith in god is like some guy claiming he has an invisible $5 note. No one has ever presented credible evidence of a god. Faith is what you have in the absence of evidence.

  48. No they didn't. I'm proud of the way Australia handled the pandemic. They treated the pandemic as a natural disaster as it was and activated the necessary rules and restrictions that would apply under any other disaster footing. Problem is the me me me folk want their own way at all time and fck everyone else. It's called selfishness. It clearly wasn't a power grab because the restrictions were eased off on multiple occasions and have mostly gone now.
