The last of the one nation (which Thatcher definitely was not one of) tory old guard left office over Brexit, but Hague and IDS had been eroding branch. The whole reason for letting the party decide the leader was to ensure the one nation Tories were not selected.

If your having a conversation using the same term with different means, then it’s not going to be a productive conversation. Being a pedant to derail or undermine a point of view because there’s no challenge intellectually is not important. I don’t believe anyone would be confused as to the meaning of the OPs comment.

  40. Will it still be an issue at the next election? He has a large enough majority to ignore a lot of fringe groups, and I’m not sure they will vote against unrelated policies. Will they vote against electoral reform, or education reform, or feeding kids? I doubt it.

  50.  @johnrussell3961  no, I was talking about the death of the one nation tory mentality. Thatcher was not a one nation tory, and had to be restrained in many of the respects Rory highlights. The green belt for example kept getting re-zone. Boom bust and trickle down economics was not fiscally sensible, only during the brief tenure of John Major were these values reintroduced by Ken Clarke.
