That's a perfectly rational position to take. I'm sure the club don't want someone with his wages not even named in the squad, or as a perennial bench warmer. This is clearly political, and UTD are chopping off their nose to spite their face. It's not arrogance, where you have the skill, success, and results, to prove it. It's just small people nipping at, arguably the best (or second best) to ever do it.

He is superior, and if you genuinely are, it's a mere observation, not a pompous claim. Furthermore, he spent nearly a decade at Real, and scored more goals than he played games. Piers wants sensationalism and big viewing numbers but he's using dead Palestinians to bolster his viewership; he asks everyone to condemn Hamas yet he's never condemned the mass murder of 11,000 Gazans except as a riposte/retort whenever the interviewee senses his flagrant disregard for Palestinian life.
