  21. The definition of a species is a bit more nuanced than a high school biology text will typically detail. it's more of a "rule of thumb" than "this is what happens 100% of the time. It's descriptive, because humans like to put things in boxes, but it isn't prescriptive. Like "Ligons" exist (even though they themselves are infertile), but we see enough differences both genetically and phenotypically between lions and tigers we define them as different species. In the case of Neanderthals, who also came from a much earlier wave of migration out of Africa, the genetics were closer than the phenotypes suggest, and interbreeding was still possible.

He said you cannot perceive the curvature of the earth below about 50 thousand feet. hiking to the top of everest, the perceived curvature is still far less than 5%, so humans have a hard time seeing it without help. but it's there. and he NEVER said it wasn't visible. bugger off, liar.

The grad students just have to do scut lab work for whichever prof's lab they end up in, and don't actually have to do anything original. Totally different in Zoology, where you have to come up with an original thesis and present it to be publicly shredded. It was a terrible thing MCB did. terrible.
