Given that the purpose of the license is to fund the BBC, surely viewing only BBC programmes should be prohibited without a license. A complete travesty.

This driver needs a mandatory course on defensive driving and a fine (and points) for endangering other road users. The same should apply to anyone caught tailgating imo.
84
Another example of our flawed planning process. Totally agree about the lack of consultation, which apparently amounts to a failure in the council's duty of care. There is the wider question of why we allow such installations before adequate research of potential health risks is completed.
79
The first reaction is to watch the cyclist's position, from the way the video was shot. Watching the car closely, I agree with you and the police. The motorist should be driving defensively: both position and speed too aggressive.
62
Never expect accountability from councils or government. That would expose us to the danger of transparency and democracy.
45
I can only say, that's the only option I would have to help the woman against an armed man, due to being older and not at full strength and fitness. I would likely do the same thing. Ibrahim was acting as a good citizen. Too many would walk away.
26
The price cap fails to protect consumers as it takes no account of excess profit (only wholesale costs.) Companies took the rip with the last increase, as the cap regulates the unit rate but not the daily supply rate, which was increased substantially. Quite simply, the market is broken, as Martin Lewis has stated.
17
How critical to this case is computer hacking? If the information was obtained by other methods would he be free? Or is it more a question of America's dirty secrets being exposed and investigative journalism being stifled?
14
sean sean don't get that. From what I saw the cyclist was on a clear road before the car overtook him then braked hard. The motorist caused the unsafe distance by pulling in early then brake testing.
14
Firstly, an apology is meaningless without taking responsibility. That means resignation, not only for an abject breach of his own government rules, but for misleading parliament. Next: all those in breach to pay the fines from their own pocket - no donor bailouts and no expenses claims.
14
When considering levels of greed (including illegal scams) just remember Thatcher's claim that "There's no such thing as society."
12
@iansmith6086 ah! Notices (on lampposts??) Is that adequate consultation? Seems like a flawed planning system.
10
The new rule seems crazy. The old one, when turning left, should be clarified, published and enforced.
9
For a perfect example, watch PMQs. Plenty of material there.
9
At a guess: short term profit.
8
Thought I'd reached that point when I stopped paying for the licence at 70. Then after a couple of years, the b'stard Tories stopped the funding for this and blamed the BBC for making us all pay.
8
@stephenhughes3652 it's strange how such strong scientific argument is not accompanied by adequate research on the actual health effects.
8
Perhaps checking facts would be helpful before trotting out the last part of your post. There are laws against the destruction or defacement of property and these are applied. Now why would the police pick on poor misunderstood Tommy? Something to do with precedent?
8
Starmer makes some payback while Honest Bob takes 75 grand from an off-shore shell company with no employees. Ban all donations.
7
Yes. As Dickens wrote: the main purpose of the law is to make business for itself.
7
Why not? When research has not been completed?
6
@asseyez-vous6492 well. Certainly 43.6% of voters would fall in that category. Lol
6
And Boris replied....
5
That's opinion and not proof. So I'll tell you that Tommy is not a victim, he has absconded after a warrant. Not quite the saint or victim your whataboutery suggests.
5
At least Mark Thatcher got lost with Michelle Mouton for company.
5
@tommy5675 good point. I'm acutely aware of it and in full agreement with you
5
@fredsmith5473 I agree with much of what you say. It takes will to change legacy systems. Not too difficult from that point. Political interference gives the Tories the state media they crave, and we must all pay for it without age exemption. Austerity is a convenient tool to manipulate opinion and create division.
5
@qasimmir7117 In many cases what you call "superior judgement" is necessary to avoid the result of poor anticipation. Not just the number of years driving, but the number of miles on different roads in different conditions builds experience of safe and defensive driving.
5
Foghorn never speaks in the public interest. Just his own, irrespective of the wider damage. This may prove interesting.
5
@NorfolkSceptic I'm perfectly aware that short supply or excess demand affect price under normal market forces. This has been exacerbated by conflict and we suffer cost push inflation, compounded by the drive to profiteer and take advantage. Under such exceptional circumstances, you can either leave the market alone, or you can intervene to protect society. Your point about investment is interesting, as we have a cash cow from a captive market and companies choosing dividends and reward over investment. Quite simply and bluntly: the market is broken. To additionally pretend that the green levy is significant is a joke. It's a pittance in relative terms and climate change will not wait for us. We have a government playing footsie with business, in a token break from holiday and infighting, while many face despair.
4
Thanks for what you do, barrister. Good and helpful work from the best of motives.
4
Welcome to a world where customers are no longer treated a human beings. Customer service has become an oxymoron, in the case of many large companies.
4
Fully agree. We refuse to use automatic tills because they ultimately result in people being labelled "benefit scroungers."
4
@evaahh9584 I take your point. Regrettably that's not the BBC. Seems more like state media every day. Only my opinion, of course.
4
@EnochPowellsLibrarian Alan Sugar compared Corbyn to Hitler. The main point being, they both breached impartiality.
3
How is council tax corrupt? Should we not pay for council services?
3
Thanks for the clarification. I suspect that some politicians may deliberately conflate the two acts of protest and damage as an excuse to abandon EHCR.
3
@blankroomsoup666 a radio is not a synchronous communication device; a phone is. If the phone can be used in voice activation mode, hands-free, then it is safer to operate it.
3
@evaahh9584 "Publicly funded" does not necessarily mean a license, with vague exclusions.
3
@esecallum Yes. He said he is a Muslim. So what? So are some of our best friends.
3
No comment on brown envelopes. There should be an onus on local authorities to provide sufficient parking on a new development, instead of planners allowing builders to cram more housing for profit. Once again the government is closing the stable door after the horse has bolted and penalising the easy target: motorists.
3
@canuck3169 Grow up. He's not stupid enough to fall for that. He recruits rent-a-thug, alerted by social media. Is it a coincidence that the thugs are never far away? Protecting a cenotaph from what?
3
Good to learn that the rules also apply to BMWs lol.
3
As someone who drove many miles in my work, I found rubber-neckers (even without a phone) equally hazardous.
2
Perhaps you called it out before the law was passed, when used as an excuse against Just Stop Oil and other environmental protests. Amazing how we complain when it affects the hard right. Unfortunately there is a precedent with poor misunderstood Tommy: Wherever he goes, rent-a-thug follows.
2
After turning right???
2
@stephengraham1153 I also read it the same way
2
Seems like a conflict of interest. A bit like trusting an MP to answer a question honestly. Lol
2
Andrew Neil; Alan Sugar. Neither of them sacked.
2
Personally I always question pseudonym accounts and give them less credence. This is after experiencing their content ... often extreme: either vacuous rhetoric or irrelevant shape-shifting verbosity. Perhaps someone will disabuse my perception.
