  2. @Emma Rose I suffer from the same disbelief. Through the news, the world had a front-row seat (from Dec-2019 through June-2020) in what measures China had to adopt to keep this thing from spreading. All you had to do was read the news. Here in the US, domestic travel was allowed to continue unabated, as if the disease wasn't even there, with the sorry results we see around us today.

  3. Hate to say it but governments basically have an unlimited budget for that kind of thing and can afford to hire smart people. Even if you have no mobile phone and use only cash for transactions, your vehicle has many RFID components (as well as its own internal wi-fi) that make it easy to track. Bottom line - you are probably not important enough to be worth tracking, so don't worry much.

  4. April, you got it right. The DNA sequence of the virus was released to the public on January 10. Smarter countries like Taiwan got with the program ASAP; the people began wearing masks universally, no questions asked, in service of the common good. Here in the USA, I'm still wearing out keyboards explaining to complete boneheaded morons who even now can't wrap their pin-sized brains around the concept of how everyone wearing masks all the time is far less inconvenient than, say, truckloads of bodies out in the streets, and much longer-lasting disruptions to normalcy.

And how that was the excuse to continue to let them spread disease all over the world? Such a high price to pay for such small-minded pursuit of profit in the first months of 2020.

  7. Correct. As soon as it gets cold outside, and more people go inside with the heat on, cases go back up. You could almost match the northern states onset of cold weather with the rapid spread of covid. Here in the US, we made the mistake of relaxing our guard during the summer (when case rates were going down) then it bit us hard when cool weather came.

  8. From the highs in the 70K range, US daily new cases are finally showing the decrease that the leader wants to see. All it took was cutting the CDC out of the loop on numbers from hospitals.

My worst fear right now is that an apparently asymptomatic person, perhaps by trying to maintain a low profile or perhaps by smuggling or human trafficking, is going to travel to places like Hyderabad - places with a lot of poor people living together, people with little or no access to healthcare. The cost of not complying with quarantine is ultimately horrendous.

  12.  @susan9188  Correct. It is no more difficult for this virus to spread in dense apartment buildings than it was aboard the Diamond Princess, where people were locked into their cabins for almost a month and the virus still spread throughout the ship.

Obviously they have a lot of pent-up hostility & anger, and they respond well to stupid propaganda that's aimed at the double-digit-IQ set. I'm thinking outdoors conservation projects, living in barracks, working under the sun, and kept away from the propaganda. That might help some of them wake up.

(I'm jealous, if the people there are that sensible) Where I live, every unvaccinated knob/tool/fool in the phone book is out there without any mask, walking into stores through the exits (to show they're not "sheeple") and generally comporting themselves as the most uncaring assholes.

  17.  @jocelynstuff1947  Unfortunately covid19 is quite a bit more communicable than the common seasonal flu, which is why the ratio of cases between the two is running 10:1 or higher. And the matter of everyone wearing masks has cut down quite a bit on the spread of common colds and the common seasonal flu. We should do the masks thing every year.

  18. The US is having problems right now with the whole concept of mask wearing. Heck, in some places where rural law enforcement doesn't like the political affiliation of the governor, they are selectively not enforcing the laws designed to curb the spread of covid. And some of the weaker-minded citizens consider it an affront to their "freedumbs" to be told to wear a mask -- basically the same people who whine about the seat belt laws that save their lives.

Most people alive today never lived through a time when things had to be shut down, when people had to hunker in, and so on, merely to prevent the spread of a disease. Some older people may remember the 1952 polio outbreak, but otherwise, most westerners have lived their lives in a comfy bubble in which not too many Really Bad Things happened. This is far outside what those people have experienced. Some can parse it only through the lenses of denial, fear, disbelief, etc. Edit: I've been a long time history reader so this is all familiar stuff. I am jealous of the people of the 1940s, who, upon hearing that Pearl Harbor had been bombed, didn't fill their Twitter/Fakebook feeds with disinformation, calling it "fake news" and saying that people are under no obligation to participate in the hoaxes of signing up to serve, participating in rationing programs, or blacking out their windows at night.

  34. I live in a state (Oregon) where masks are required in public spaces. Yet this morning at a supermarket, I kept running into the same woman who wasn't wearing a mask, and who ignored all the evil eyes she was getting. Finally I looked at her pointedly and tapped the mask. She shouted out that some people are exempt (they're not) and that some people are smart. Huh. "Smart" like Herman Cain, she obviously meant. I moved away from her quickly after that. At least she didn't shoot me.

  39. I've got friends in Australia (QLD, WA) and it's a struggle getting them to take this thing seriously enough to mask and get vaccinated and not socialize openly with strangers. I try telling them that covid has killed a lot more of our people than WW2 did, and they just shrug and tell me it's different there. Much of their country is wide open to stealth spread that would go like wildfire later. There are people dodging lockdowns, heading out to the bush, and socializing in big groups totally without masking or distancing - I know this from watching youtube channels where they post their travels in near real time.

You may effectively gauge the seriousness of the epidemic by the ways in which the Chinese government is reacting to it. If all you saw were just their actions, you'd think this is along the lines of the 1918 pandemic or even worse.

I remember some initial studies predicting that without the interventions and the quick development of vaccines, we would have been looking forward to 10 years of cycles of death and illness as this thing reverberated throughout the human world, mutating and killing people all the while. It would be like the see-saw that is Brazil now, but a lot worse.
