He couldn't have ordinary Russians going to visit relatives in Ukraine as the place slowly improved and got more aligned with the west .. they'd come home with stories of representative democracy and greater prosperity for all and a hopeful path to the future.

Most interestingly, there is not a single written treaty (between us and them) that contains language covering the issue of former Soviet republics joining NATO. Putin lies about that constantly. There was no such promise.

  8. There is quite a lot of that. Not only did Russia violate the Minsk 2 agreement, but it violated a number of other agreements when it attacked Ukraine. There's the Budapest Memorandum of 1994, in which Russia agreed to not to use economic or military force against Ukraine, in exchange for the return of the Soviet nuclear arsenal remaining there. There's the NATO-Russia Founding Act of 1997, in which Russia agreed that the now-independent nations of the former USSR were free to choose their own path, east, west, whatever. Russia also violated the Minsk Agreement of 1991, in which it agreed to respect the territorial sovereignty of Ukraine.

What someone needs to tell Putin now is that if the Russian invaders want to deploy tactical nuclear weapons into forward offense areas, the west will have no choice but to equip Ukraine with tactical nuclear weapons too. It's that simple. Probably the DMZ will need to be 100km deep into Russian territory around Ukraine, considering how useless the word of the Russians is on any kind of written treaty.

Russia already has trouble defending its ships against a much smaller country that has no navy. How do they think this is going to work out for them?

To Russians, it seems perfectly OK that they bomb maternity hospitals and childrens schools, but when one of their AA rockets misses its target and explodes near a beach, they shriek about "oh the humanity". They're in desperate need of some kind of readjustment of their views on these things.

  49. Russia failing to honor its obligations?? Say it ain't so! Russia has violated the terms of the Minsk Agreement of 1991, the Budapest Memorandum of 1994, the NATO Russia Founding Act of 1997. Their word is worth NOTHING on a treaty or agreement.
