I posted the following comment (unedited) five months ago: "There's a plan and it goes like this: Keep pushing false negative Brexit news and calling for a second (in/out) referendum (people's vote) thereby creating an impression (albeit false) that the nation has changed its mind. Then create impression that leaving Single Market and Customs Union is too risky and need to hold second referendum, not in/out as out would increase, but with the following question: 'The UK is ending its membership of the EU, should the UK remain part of the Single Market and Customs Union? Yes or No. This way they think they can appeal to status quo, ramp up project fear, get some (temporary) EU free movement concessions and throw in some IRA violence and con the British people into keeping the UK tethered to the EU. Thus maintaining the possibility of the UK being rejoined on a 'we have no say' ticket in the not too distant future. They know the British people want out of the EU and they know they have to leave, but they're trying to work it so the British people never break free."

  20. What's so good about being in the EU that, we have to be scared by 'experts' over trade and the economy to stay in. Why can't they promote the benefits? It seems the answer is because there are no real benefits for us... OK it's nice to be able to retire in sunny Spain, but only about 1% of us actually do this and many have voted for Brexit. Also, it's likely that after Brexit Spain will want to encourage retired Brits to spend their UK pensions in Spain. Oh! And it's easy to go work in EU countries! Yes, but how many actually do this and how many are only there for the hedonistic night-life? We have TV programmes about moving to Australia not Austria! Is this 'EU free movement' really worth allowing millions of unskilled people in low-pay low-employment areas of the EU to have unfettered access to all our jobs and housing? I recall 'leaving the EU and the UK economy' being mentioned a fair bit during the referendum campaign. I think most of us looked at similar nations not in the EU and thought: 'if they can run a successful independent country - then so can we - the British'.

  23. As someone who voted Leave in 2016, I have been in favour of a second referendum since it has become clear the political elite has refused to accept the 2016 result. There should be another referendum with the following conditions: The question shall be: Should the UK leave the EU to become an independent country? Yes [ ] No [ ]. The government shall not declare a position. The parties must not declare a position. MPs must declare a position. An equal number of MPs shall be appointed to campaign for each side. All other MPs shall limit campaigning to constituency level. Any MP on the losing side must resign their parliamentary seat. I think the Leave side has made a huge mistake in not calling the elite's bluff, as people have learned more about the EU and there is now even more reasons to vote for the UK to Leave the EU. Let's face reality, if the pro-EU political establishment actually believed it could reverse the 2016 result - it would be holding a second in/out vote.

  28. +Des Oliver It does make you wonder why so many people wanted to come to live in the so called 'sick man of Europe'. The UK did not 'opt' to join the EEC in 1973, as the UK electorate did not vote for this. People in the UK do not have 'rose tinted views' of the fall in living standards - they live it. In this 'sick' period there was no long term unemployed, a 'job' meant 40 hrs per week for life, a single unskilled wage could keep a family and buy a house, council houses were readily available, council house rent was a day's wage and included water charges and council tax, university education was free and grant assisted, the people owned half the economy. Today (after being joined to the EEC to improve the UK's economic situation) both parents have to work, need Tax Credits to feed and clothe the kids and cannot buy a house.

Any person holding a real firearm is reasonably able to check if the firearm is loaded with deadly ammunition and if they do not know the firearm is not loaded with deadly ammunition they are reasonably able to know not to point the firearm at people.

  37. I agree. I fail to see why he is responsible for her reckless actions. She was an adult, she boarded the boat willingly, she took the controls willingly, she willingly drove too fast. If new evidence shows events were not as he says, then it's possible he is responsible. I wonder if the fatality was a male things would have taken a different course. It's a tragic end to a young girl's life, but it doesn't mean the responsibility for her death lies with him.

  40.  @keithsymons5708  Recently, in Australia some MPs were forced to stand down when it was revealed they held dual citizenship. The idea being the rules allow only 100% loyal citizens to make decisions for the nation. Our MPs are (1/100,000) they each had one vote in the referendum. Most have been selected before voters were given the opportunity to vote for them. The UK membership of the EU has never been a people led venture, it has always been a top down imposition on the people by a political elite. The loyalty to UK of pro EU MPs sitting in the UK parliament was questionable before the referendum. The referendum result effectively rescinded their vision for the UK and removed their legitimacy to govern the people with trust. They should now be forced to stand down.

  42. We will have to wait and see, as no Leave voter expected things to be better on day one. We're putting the UK on a different course and there may be some economic losses, but Leave voters believe this will be a worthwhile price for the future gains. If in five years we have higher unemployment and lower standard of living then you may have an economic argument... You do not have one now.

  44.  @fogvarious2478  I don't think there is any legal requirement to drive a boat on the Thames. They both made a decision to go onto the boat and it appears she was driving when the boat struck the log. Clearly, they were both acting recklessly, but I fail to see how he can be responsible for her hitting the log that was probably not visible. It's very tragic, but it looks on the face of it to be 'death by misadventure'.

Why was Shepherd not wearing a life jacket if he believed there was real danger? Why would Shepherd allow another person to drive if he believed it was not safe? The conviction rests on the presumption Shepherd had a duty of care, but he had no qualifications in marine mechanics or operating a speedboat, so why is it presumed he had any more responsibility for her safety than she had for her own safety? You say 'because he owned the boat' but you have proved yourself wrong when you stated: "The owner would not be guilty of manslaughter as he has no involvement in the crash" If this is the case then why do you think Shepherd the one with the duty of care when he was not driving? What exactly was Shepherd's involvement in the crash?

They were both being reckless and it resulted in a life being lost. I just don't see why he is criminally responsible for this if she was driving the boat. The log was probably not visible to either of them.
