I have problems with the idea of American exceptionalism, whatever the "F" it is supposed to mean, but it is not an idea that has gone away or turned into a joke. There is something about America, if it is just its place geographically or historically. We seem to be doing our best to make the concept repugnant, but the US and the idea of the USA has been a beacon to a lot of people in the last 100 years. Today a lot of people I talk to that have emigrated here tell me they would rather go to other places but it is so easy to get into the USA. No more melting pot, not more classless society, so it is valid for people to question this idea today, but relatively in the past the US has at least held up the ideals, even if we have not carried them out. It is sad, I wish I could say the US was even more exceptional that we claimed, but in a predatory capitalist system the number one first lesson to learn is bait and switch, brand and exploit the brand.

The leaders of the Progressive movement seem to have as their goal creating a movement that is so offensive to the moderates and Conservatives that the Right is also mobilized to fight and offend the left ... thus keeping the people out of politics and bickering between themselves while the elites make off with all the loot and capture legislation and policy.
If you divide politics into two reasonable factions, right and left, they both have their constituents ... basically the right is for institutions and corporations and the left is for people. The left should limit its scope to human rights, social and economic justice issues. Quit trying to tell the military what to do and how to act, geo-political realities are not the purview of the left, except in special cases, such as Viet Nam in the 70's, and Central America in the 80's, and the Middle East in the 90's and on ... the Left can speak up, but it will end up fragmenting the society and it does no good.
We need both sides of the country to work together. They don't have to agree, but they need to balance their needs rationally against the other side. Right now the US is tilted way over the to side of the rich and corporations to the point that people are hurting, and the corporations are acting without constraint - and hurting the people and the environment.

In theory, I agree with much of what Hedges says. The problem is Hedges has no real experience of understanding of our government, how it works and why it is impossible to change. Sure, if there was an upswell of activism across the country a the local level things might change - but what things and how? Furthermore, the people are so fragmented that they don't even go out and vote.
Another thing about Hedges that disgusts me, along with Chomsky and most of the far Left pundits who I used to follow assiduously, is they are constantly side with Palestinians 100% and 0% with Israel. I consider myself far Left, but Palestinians have no claim to a role in the Left ... and that is disgusting. Whenever you hear these pundits, and organizations like Democracy Now! never reporting both sides of this issue, you know they are fake.
So in political theory the Left is great, and reporting news with respect to the Liberal, Progressive, Tolerent, democratic point of view, they are great, but they shift over to Middle Eastern horror terrorists 100% and never report on Israel, or what the Palestinians do to bring police actions against them. I have no interesting in Hedges, Chomsky or any of this clique.
They are liars and cannot be objective. They only tell the truth to establish a base, and then they corrupt them with lies.

So, your answer would be yes then, right. That's what I asked.
So, Iran's Shia Muslims are voting FOR all that religious oppression then? You do understand that the religious authority has more power than the President as well too, right?
The NYT article said Mr. Rouhani has promised economic growth and greater freedom of speech and of the press. So, if Iran has all this freedom and democracy that you say, why do they need to promise greater freedom or speech. Because you and I both know that in Iran if you say the wrong thing and get attention for it you can end up dead or in prison. But, you are fine with that and argue that one election means that Iran is as democratic as Israel, right?
You and I might agree that Iran is changing, but that is coming from pressure from abroad as more Iranians become city dwellers and are exposed to outside ideas. I am sure Iran will get there eventually, but Israel is already there and has been since its inception, so I guess we can agree to disagree despite your daring opinion. You know the reality of Iran just like most other people who follow it, and you know that you get nowhere in life unless you are a devout Shia Muslim, and on women's rights Iran may be ahead of Saudi Arabia, but that is not saying much.
But you can amuse and shock people by making such claims.

This guy and his family, the Barghoutis, are rich as hell. They go around the world, get the best medical treatment, the best education, eat the best food and can do what they like while they beg for money for terrorism against Israel, all the while their fellow Palestinians live with violence the terrorist thugs supported by these people have to endured, poverty, lack of health care, lack of education, while these Barghoutis blame it all on Israel. Nice gig I guess if you are a Palestinian and you like being a fascist.
