I've been saying this for decades ... and with the way that we cut taxes, run deficits, and give people what they think is more "discretionary income" is foolish, because large corporations can figure, the more money you make the higher they can charge you.
Then, they do not pay taxes on it ... so the end results if instead of your money going to the government to do things for all of us, it is like we are being taxes by private power so they can corrupt the government more and more take over things. They make the government the shipping boy, scape goat for everything going wrong that they cause, and then disempower it even more - meaning they disempower democracy, and you and me.
Since the Reagan years the plans of the plutocrats have put this country in such a headlock that we might never be able to get out of it. What used to be a social society is not a miltary junta that is all about sucking all the money away, and leaving just enough to let people who are of no economic value to them die slowly, while they and their families take everything over.

Let's first talk about what the major problems that generate global warming are. One is human agriculture ... a huge amount of greehouse gases comes from the way we farm, and particularly eat meat. That can be managed if we re-forest the planet. The other major problem is human population. We need to let the population decrease naturally, and that will play havoc with the way we have done the economy for unlimited growth. So, anything we do that will save us requires human lifestyles on planet Earth, especially human life in the developed world to change for the better. This is as big a challenge as just plain global warming, and is probably why we will fail.
renewables are perfect. i am going to get solar panels and batteries for my house at some point, soon. but, just think of a scenario where there is a catastrophe like a huge super-volcano explodes like Krakatoa and spews ash high into the upper atmosphere where it travels around the world and attenuates the sunlight, say 50%. Almost all of that solar infrastructure would be useless. Or, consider that they are talking about a meteor strike sometime in the near future, or maybe in the next 200 years and it kicks up dust and debris into the sky and cuts off a lot of solar.
We would need either some way to put the solar panels out in space and safely beam that energy back to the Earth through the atmosphere, or a way to generate energy, and food even, on the face of the planet. If sunlight is attenuated so would our agriculture be. We would have to grow huge amounts of food by artificial light.
I admit these scenarios are probably low probability, but are they completely unlikely? Why does it not make sense to find a way to manage this technology for its ability to create almost unlimited energy?

What Donald Trump "says" has always and will always mean nothing and be just a distraction. He said he would not touch Social Security and Medicare too, but already he is questioning that. Everything is on the table with this bozo, and yesterday he claimed he had the greatest victory in modern history. Look at his far right appointees. The reality is that the Republicans bad as they are could not find anyone that would lie like Donald Trump, so they coddled and nurtured him along so he can stab everyone in the back. The people who voted for him don't know anything about how these things work. They are so worked up by "lying" right wing radio there is no hope for them, they won't even realize if they are better or worse off. The stupid are being herded by the liars, there is no hope for the smart people in America, they are just encouraged to be selfish jerks. For the longest time whenever I went overseas and came back I was glad to be back and thought America is the best. Now, we are just like a third world cesspool, there are quite a few other places in the world that are better than the US and it makes me livid, it is the Republicans starting with Reagan and his massive deficits that killed social spending, upped military spending, had the defense contractors buying up the media, and now we have fake news and disinformation. The American government right now is a crime syndicate.

I agree somewhat with this guy. America cannot be isolationist ... if you just look at one thing ... we have spent many trillions of dollars on the military and military weapons and technology. Most of what is innovative comes from the US military and then works its way into consumer goods. This is what gives us a leap ahead of other countries, and also we test our equipment in the field and our people.
That is a huge sunk cost, a gigantic expenditure and investment, and even if we wanted to - and even if it was the right thing to do - we cannot do that - PERIOD - IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN.
So, given that constraint, the US needs to be incredibly thoughtful and smart about what we do with our military. We do not really have a history of doing that, so one of the first things we need a President to do is an audit of the military and intelligence, and then reorganize then so that it makes sense and the actions that we take are all win-win, not just blowing stuff up and creating havoc.
We also need to develop the technology to help countries ... the problem and reason we do not is that what we need to do is to create dynamic social support systems in these countries to make them work ... as we did in Japan and Germany at the end of WWII ... and the US does not want to go there because it shows, as does the whole path of the developed world since WWII that socialism and working for people WORKS, and it is the only thing that works.
The problem is that this pushes to the forefront the corruption that our system has become.

Goes off into the weeds when he talks about taxes as a punishment.
When any the different tax systems we have had in America were
first implemented they were only meant for the richest Americans,
because they were the ones that did the best in our country.
Over time that rich class has become corrupt, lazy and entitled,
and so they feel entitled to have all of the working class pay their taxes
while they do nothing but take over more of the government and figure
out better ways to make the working class feel the pain of their
supposed inferiority.
The American tax system used to be progressive, and is now
very regressive, and this was the very problem that had North
American colonists demanding independence in the first place.
Our rich and powerful class are much, much, a thousand times
worse than the Royalty of England was when we were an English
colony ... and according to our founding documents this gives us
the right to petition for redress, or to overthrow the political order
if we get none. This is a big deal, and Trump is about to make the
tax system even better for super-rich and corporations.
What needs to happen:
- investment and working income need to be taxed at the same rate.
- all deductions need to go away, even charity and housing.
- we need a single-payer health-care system so that people do not go broke because of medical bills.
- Income needs to be taxed progressively, and there needs to be brackets at higher levels. The highest tax bracket currently is about $300,000 where income after that is taxed just slightly more. We need new brackets at $1million, $3 million, $10 million, and $100 million, and the highest brackets, when people make $100 million or over need to be taxed at 90% or even more, so in effect we have a maximum wage so that Americans do not need to fear the political power of the very rich as we do now.

Hey Jordan ... do your due diligence and read Thomas Frank's "Listen Liberal" and then you won't have to mentally flail over what Hillary Clinton is a symptom of.
She is a total symbol of someone who is lazy, stupid and entitled and only could have been a placeholder in the sense Obama was a placeholder in history. What did Hillary ever really do? I hate it, but I side with some of the critics who are sadly only on the Democratic side ... SHE WAS THERE at many events, but what policy did she every enact. SHE VOTED ON THE IRAQ WAR, and I don't even blame her for that - EVERYONE DID.
But she did not come out of it, or even make peace with it or explain it. She never explained why her email. She never explained Bengazi, which I don't care about, I agree with Colin Powell on that - the guy on the ground mismanaged his station. The point is that rather than take any risks she would take the most recent Trump foot in mouth or embarrassment and point at that. I got sick of that - not sick enough to even think of voting for Trump, but Hillary is simply not a leader, and that goes right to what she would have or will do if she was selected by the Electors to be President over Donald Trump - she is all about carrying out the wishes of those who direct her. She is a vessel the throw money in. In other words she would be pretty much like Obama.
Being like Obama compared to Trump is a good enough thing that I would still like to see her be President instead of Trump - but have no illusions.
If she was a strong unthreatened leader who wanted to serve America she would have gotten Bernie as VP or in some close capacity. Instead she picked Tim Kaine that tiptoed around like an effeminate lapdog. I hate that guy, and he was a shitty debater as well. How is this guy even a leader in Virginia I wonder.
