So we need to learn how to vote for MPs (& thus governments) who will actually do the job we pay them to do not the job "donors" are paying for.

Thank you! I'm glad I'm not the only one that's noticed the festering masses of offices that have been building up clinging like guano to the NHS since the 1979 government sold off cleaning services & gave us MRSA.
16
@CarlTebbutt the "nouveau riche" have been attracting condemnation for centuries, both from those above & those below them.
10
@stephenhaywood5672 excellent joke! 😂😂😂😂 The company's owners - Tice, a property tycoon, & Farage, a hedgefund dealer who used "Insider Trading" to make millions off the Brexit vote. 😮

Back when BP was British, before the Government sold it without asking us, BP made (in large numbers) the world's best solar panels. Tough, long-lasting & (for the era) very high output. You can still find them on road sign illuminations & a few other places.

@532bluepeter1 that's "new money", "old money" are usually very much the opposite, they're working towards the stability of the estate which very much includes the welfare of everyone living on the estate & the land itself. "Old money" was decimated in the 1970s though – Labour taxed many of them out of existence putting thousands out of housing & of employment, English Heritage had to be created to catch some of the abandoned manor houses.

@stevencalvert9454 lack of regulation in construction gave us Grenfell Tower 😢
7
This poses a useful question, useful if you ask your MP (& you definitely should ask).
6
Surely it's within the Government's power to make either borrowing or saving either attractive or unattractive for each sector?
5
The UK isn't Bhutan & our Press don't compare it with Bhutan. To the best of my knowledge Bhutan is the only country which tracks itself in these terms.
5
Product quality is about patient safety, it comes from the adulterated bread scandals of the early & mid 1800s when bread was all many people could afford to eat. (It's also why bakeries are singled out for protection in the Geneva Conventions governing war).
5
There's not supposed to be a financial transaction during lobbying but all too often there is
5
You miss the point, there is no dispute that the NHS is intrinsically A Good Thing but it could be better & a few of it's flaws are inherently lethal. This monologue begins to set out one of those flaws & states that it's a problem of the whole of society not just the NHS.
4
The UK has more than 2 political parties, the last century's 2 encumbents have had their turn & just like the Whigs they can join the annals of history without any upset to the populace.
4
@Minimmalmythicistwith Starmer not Corbyn the outlier 😢
4
@annphillips1086 look again, the Green's offering is excellent
4
...and not written by the sitting Prime Minister
4
Yes, a video explaining the ramifications of joining the Euro would be useful information when choosing how to vote.
4
I blame the dumbing-down driven by the Daily Mail & the other titles which have followed the same path
4
@GG-hu9dn "build them for everybody" suggests to me things like Buckingham Palace & the Victorian museums, libraries, bath houses, sewers & other public utilities. The Victorians certainly built a lot of public works.
3
We have exactly that in the Civil Service but politicians are forever interfering in their work. We need to learn how to vote for better politicians.
3
@RichardJMurphy governments may not need credit ratings but changes are used for political leverage
3
Unless we collectively suddenly learn how to vote I'm afraid you're right 😢
3
@grolfe3210 it looks like you're one of the people who refuse to play your proper part in a democracy by giving attention to all the options. There was indeed a party offering reform of the House of Lords!
3
The leading cause by far of bankruptcies 😢
3
Labour is afraid of Nuttyahoo 😢
3
No, real Labour are very good with the country's finances, they've dragged us out of every hole the Torys dropped us in since 1945, even Blair did an adequate job though, after his purges, Starmer doesn't have much hope of following the tradition.
3
_a_ problem, it's far from the only problem
3
good to see you here 😊
3
A new incentive has finally arrived -- solar panels are now cheaper than roof tiles!
3
@glyngreen538 roughly 3% of UK land covered by solar panels would supply our entire electricity needs - 1.4% is already built on.
3
It's been left so long that carbon capture has become necessary 😢 The warnings started in 1912 & the entire science community went public more than 50 years ago, government action is waaay late, possibly too late, & we're having to pay for it 😢
3
This goes back to Thatcher & the 1977 Ridley Report. 😢
3
apparently something to do with Gordon Brown
3
NHS -- did you miss the bit where Richard talked about this? He said (& he's right) if you're in a queue & there's an immigrant in front of you they're not queuing, they're the doctor you're going to see.
3
That line may have worked in the 1960s but that was a very long time ago! 😂😂😂
3
@arthur1670 you're suggesting pensioners should pay their own pension out of their pension. This seems a little daft to me.
2
@arthur1670 you cannot blame private individuals for Parliament's mismanagement, the 1948 universal State Pension was only supposed to be paid from current funds temporarily due to the massive financial hit of WWII & it's recovery. Several attempts have been made to get it properly funded but none have completed the task.
2
Excellent idea! Thank you 😊
2
Starmer's Labour left-wing!?! 😮 😂😂😂😂
2
@bobbylove8565 you must be in southern Scotland, everywhere else in the UK (& Europe) currently has wind (& at least some solar).
2
This all sits on the 1977 Ridley Report which explores how General Pinochet's Neoliberalism could sit in British governance. It was the basis of Thatcherism which has been followed by every Government since. We have been offered alternatives, in the last election there was the Green's offer & in the previous 2 elections there was both that & the Corbyn/McDonnell offer but people prefer not to think, prefer to be told how to vote 😢
2
The original use of "left & right" denoted where courtiers sat relative to the French king (yes, before the Revolution), those on the King's left represented the people & those on his right represented commerce. The terms haven't changed much, merely gained nuance. Starmer sits to the right.
2
The Sir Humphrey Appleby character in "Yes, Minister" is real, one of them was interviewed by the Lord Speaker just yesterday. A very interesting watch...
2
Whilst that's an interesting diatribe against Reform UK Ltd, I didn't hear you define the term "right wing" & since so many in youtube comments clearly don't understand the term would have been a good starting point. On this topic you are not talking to university students.
2
@tmoosy both Torys & Labour were voted into place by the íđíót electorate of this country. 😢
2
I have no doubt there are senior Treasury staff who drink in the same Gentleman's Club as senior staff at the Bank of England, messages could be passed...
2
You have sooo many fascinating things to learn, enjoy your journey 😊 2 that stand out for me are Speenhamland & the fact that Income Tax, Corporation Tax & Capital Gains Tax were till fairly recently all one tax with the same rates for all. (Income Tax is now highest by a large margin)
2
This is what hustings are for – they let you discover which candidates are happy to guess & which seek expertise so you can then #VoteWisely.
2
@WarrenPeacenik narrowing it down to those 2 is a political choice just as much as picking one of them. There are several models & variations to choose from.
