  1.  @bridgetveldhuis4473  Corbyn's stance on the EC/EU was typically nuanced, the fundamental "United States of Europe" concept he's always been thoroughly on board with & he likes that it's been the single most successful peace project on Earth but when it gets to real-world details his stance since 1973 was "it needs reform or we should get out". Many of those reforms came when Thatcher (bless her cotton socks, she got this right) took us from EC to EU in the '90s, it didn't go far enough for Corbyn but the voting change from "unanimous" to "qualified majority" along with the increased democracy Thatcher brought made Corbyn's reforms completely possible & even probably likely. This, well before 2016, changed Corbyn's stance to "it needs reform but we're better in than out" & this is the position he espoused at 70-odd events campaigning for the referendum (more than any other Labour politician despite what the propaganda tells). The snippets of the events that got through the Press censorship were truly inspiring, if even one had been broadcast in it's entirety at prime-time we would never have left, Labour's membership stayed at the '2:1 in favour' of consistent historical record since the '60s though the country as a whole dipped to 50/50 for the month surrounding the referendum. Russia sank at least £14million into Cambridge Analytica & it shows, comment after comment on here still repeating the same debunked propaganda, it's part of why Corbyn was so vociferous about the Russia Report.

  3. @yieldtothenight, but instead of this the Gov't is reconstituting the Electoral Commission which had at least some power over donations, even if they didn't assert it very often.

  4.  @robertjr555  Corbyn is neither 'playing' nor 'pandering', he never has & almost certainly never will, that's why he's accepted as an actor in peace processes the world over, his invitation of Sinn Fein members to talks in Westminster was the catalyst that led to the Good Friday Agreement & he acted as go-between throughout the process, risking being shot by either side. He was a central figure in the East Timor peace process & several others.

  8. Democracy is not new to the region, for instance Iran was democratic until the British/American coup of 1953 imposed a monarch. Lebanon is a democracy as are Egypt, Iraq & Turkey. Syria is nominally democratic except that somehow the President always comes from the same family. Palestine is a democracy though elections have been interrupted by Israel for nearly 2 decades.

No, Corbyn & McDonnell's plan was to wait till the contracts came up for renewal & simply not renew them, instead the State would resume the role. No State expenditure (apart from buying rolling stock), no transfer of debt, no shareholders to appease.

  13.  @JoeWolsing  chimpanzees exhibit a very similar behaviour – if someone deliberately harms you you tend to support them harming others in the hope they won't harm you again. It may be advantageous to chimpanzees who live in small groups & have lions to deal with but it's a destructive behaviour in humans.

  32. @johnwright9372, ministers have only ever been obliged to resign when it's politically expedient, usually a notification the Press was about to blow a story up but frequently the other way round, a Minister upset the wrong person & the Press was asked to blow the story up. Either way the story remained on the front pages till the resignation, after which the Minister disappeared for a 2-week holiday & came back to a different Ministerial role. Very very rarely was it anything to do with honour or decency.
