Her definition of effective altruism is a bit off. The actual thinking is, if you can help more people by making a lot of money, and giving it to those who need, that is more effective than not having a career, and digging wells, etc. to help the poor. As to the child or the masterpiece, that depends upon kinship. I'd save my grandson before any work of art. If it were an unknown child, and a Picasso, I'd still save the child, but if the art were Monet, Matisse or von Gogh, I'd save the art.

While I think celebrities using a surrogate, so they don't wreck their figure, a disgusting project, most of the problems with surrogacy are the same as they are for adoption. As long as the surrogate mother isn't enslaved, and forced to carry the pregnancy, this seems much ado over little. I know young cancer survivors and gay couples, for whom surrogacy gave a much loved child. This woman hasn't really stated anything wrong with surrogacy, except for her own personal dislike, and vague intimations that some people maybe did something wrong. But, wrong doings have resulted from corrupt adoption agencies, and that's no reason to outlaw all adoptions. Her argument seems to be 'I don't like this, so it should be abolished." She's a vey unpleasant person.

Why can't you understand why people who can read the Tanakh, in its original Hebrew, take umbrage at being told it says what it clearly does not? If you look at what it prophesized to occur when Hamoshiach finally shows up, such as all the nations will come to the Jews for wisdom and stop murdering us, you'll see that he has not yet arrived, not even once. So, when the ignorant prattle on about Isaiah, which clearly refers to the tribulations faced by the Jewish people, is about an individual, we are irked. Jerimiah clearly states that no person can atone for another's sins. And B'reshit demonstrates that Hashem hates human sacrifice. You believe what you like, but it is obvious that your jesus in not in any way the 'messiah', and in fact, considering the persecution of the Jews resulting from his possible existence, is more of an anti-messiah.

I've got a lot of comments. How the heck did she end up in the wrong place in a sherut? You tell the driver where you're going, and he tells you when you've arrived. I've driven around Israel numerous times, and I distinctly remember using WAZE in 2009, long before she was there. I'd never suggest using google maps in Israel, because it will send you into dangerous places. Always use WAZE in Israel, the maps are more up to date, and other users post useful alerts. There is a strong gay community everywhere in Israel. Why didn't she connect with them? Also, why didn't she just assume she was Lesbian, when she felt attraction to other females? I would not refer to Arab culture as homosocial, a more accurate description is gender apartheid. Also, don't call Judea and Samaria by the invader's name, and don't call the Kotel the western wall. But, good for her parents, for preventing her from mutilating herself.

The reason I'm so adamant about men not invading our safe spaces was a disgusting incident 13 years ago. I danced Contra, where half the men wore skirts because they were so breezy. This guy showed up, wearing a dress, and said call me Evelyn. He'd ask women to dance, but wanted us to lead. Weird, but no big deal. Then he'd go into the ladies restroom. We'd ask him to leave, but he wouldn't. He'd copy our movements as we freshened our lipstick and mascara. Creepy. But the topper was, I was changing my tampon, and he was clearly watching me through the semi-opaque curtain that served as a stall door. When I exited the stall, he was copying the movement of inserting a tampon. I felt violated and yelled, "get out". Another woman came in and asked what was wrong. Then all the women started yelling at him. And the guys told him to never return. Today, I doubt anyone would have dared yell at him.
