  3. My dad was born in 1919. His older sister, born in 1914, was the last of his family to pass away. She lived to 103. We'll miss her, but her life spanned more change than any other.

  5. My dad had joined the National Guard. Set to guard the warehouse district of the Monongahela side wharfs (with a billy club and an empty Model 1911), he stood ankle deep during the '36 flood. When we went to war, his unit was mobilized and he stayed the course, entering as a sergeant, and exiting as a Captain. A PTO veteran.

  15. I salute your ongoing crusade to provide sanity, equity, and cultural relevance. The dregs of the rotten wine of an era gone by still poison our cup of civilization today. Thanks for the perspective. We can hope for a better world, and can act to help it being born, but any attempt to change the status quo must start with as objective an historical perspective as can be obtained. You guys are part of providing that perspective and I thank you many times for it.

And a point about creduilty in high office: If you can see white all around someone's eyes, be attentive: he or she (or gender nonspecific) might be having a seizure or psychotic episode. Or he/she might be so methed up he or she can't close them anymore. You only see people like that in Anime, where the artists have no brief to provide accurate representations of the human form. Even there, they do it to make a point, not suggest anyone really looks like that. Except Il Duce. He breaks all the rules . . . especially those regarding editorial accuracy, honor among thieves, and Italia's role in the Great War*. *Which see. The Great War (another Indy and team project) covers Italian hopes and dreams, and nightmares, during the war years very well.

  21. The more we study history, the better arguments we can raise against abusers of the public trust. This particular episode-of Czechoslovakia and its coming dismemberment-is a crucial bit of essential history about which we should each be conversant. The rise of extremism, hiding behind aggressive, divisive, rhetoric, paid for by special interest groups, must be monitored and interrupted with swift justice when necessary. Freedoms of speech are not open license for rabble rousers to incite us to extremist acts, each against his fellow. Remember: those who preach hate (on both sides of our illusory political divide) are the real enemies of society. We are in this together, both the righteous left/right (choose your favorite) and the egregious left/right (choose your favorite). We all want to bask in the subjective sun of success. Not all of us define the word "success" the same, however, and therein lies the supposed "chink" in the armor of our national unity through which the powers of hatred and dissolution enter into our existence.

  22. A very good episode. Liked and shared as your work has so often been. My take on the ugly situation? Hypocrisy on the grand scale; codified into civilization's very fabric. We and our allies promised all these folks autonomy for helping us throw off the Japanese Neo-imperial yoke . . . and then gave them right back to their original, 1st world, abusers. Churchill and Truman and De Gaulle all supported neocolonialism, while mouthing words of self determination and individual liberty. A blot on our record that the 1st world nations lied with every promise. No wonder they were not trusted at the time. Thank God that's all changed.

  23. Liked and shared. My mother was a self made women in a man's world. Born in 1920, she saw everything of which you speak, and became an outspoken advocate for equality. Growing up in her household I never thought that women were in any way inferior. I/we had 5 family members, three of which were women, and 14 college degrees (only one from the men).

At this point (the late 19th and early 20th centuries), civilization is merely a white flag covering a world-wide culture of outright extortion, resource rapine, kidnapping, and wholesale murder, in other lands, while abhoring them in your own. Colonialism, under whatever name, is crime knowingly, and willfully, inflicted upon the innocent. It never lifts up; it always grinds down. Institutionalized bullyism. Not like today . . . today we have sanctions . . . which cause widespread starvation and epidemic without you needing troops on the ground. PROGRESS! Anyone who willingly allows, or manipulates a situation so that innocents starve, while he waxes rich on their misery, is <drumroll> an asshole. Better stop that crap . . . or I'll marry your daughter. THEN you'll be crying.

  25. Off topic, Sparticus & Co, but . . . Geeze, Indy. The Pittsburgh Pirates can't seem to get a good head of steam this year . . . It can't be the humidity. That's a given here. We evolved gills to breathe a long time back. It has to be the price of the beer at the stadiums. The real skill lies in tailgate partying just shy of trashed so you can get in past the ticket takers BEFORE your friends have to prop you up or pour you into your seat. Disclaimer: Not that I've ever been to a game that . . . wait. Yes I have. Pittsburgh is an Alcohol Town with a Sports Problem.

Civilization is more about urbanization (which increases property value, equaling less work for more pay for owners--it has no overt benefit to anyone else*) and about weaponizing technology, than it is about social and hygienic reform. *Epidemics are due to rat populations living in association with mass human dwellings, or brown mice whose populations bloom under the "toss it out of the yurt and forget it" garbage disposal methods of large scale nomadic cultures. Mass transit, coupled with population concentration, magnify the effect of new infectious organisms. Read the history of bringing fresh water to typhoid ravaged London for more on this.   30. Great Britain pursues economic war against yet another neutral . . . gunboat diplomacy to enforce Britain's right--or lack of it--to push drugs into an unwilling market. GB preaches goodness and free trade, lying through its teeth. Business as usual. They--British "Capitalists"--were the exact same way about human trafficking for more than a century. Trading in sin and profiting on human misery Monday-Saturday, and then going to church on Sunday. Evil quantified into a national system.

Gandhi's "The Story of my Experiments with Truth" makes a great read-and an effective counter to Churchill's otherwise excellent historian writings, which are tainted by the rose tinted glasses of Imperialist prejudice. I recommend reading both men, while keeping in mind they are, Gandhi and Churchill, highly partisan; the one an unrepentant racist and white supremacist*, and the other determined to advance the cause of people of color everywhere . . . especially in India.   46. My perspective on the 1929 crash: Foreclosed mortgages and who bought them all up for a song after the crash is an avenue worth research. The loss of property, and its subsequent concentration into the hands of a very few, lends credence to the existence of the various theories of conspiracy. Among these is the idea that the collapse was a designed land grab, set up and executing in ways that would be considered criminal today (insider trading and conspiracy/intent to defraud). I doubt that German financiers were consulted before the order went out to report (falsely, as it turned out) runs on the banks. German financiers and tycoons were victims, all right, but not singled out for punitive economic tactics.

The whole episode was a few very rich guys trying to legitimize hate, so they could employ people of color to do menial and dangerous jobs at slave wages.   49. Banks foreclosed on the nardscrabble farmers in what was popularly referred to as the "Dust Bowl". Then the banks sold all those properties in large scale lots to big depositors . . . just before the Rural Electrification act was signed. A few families ended up owning vast tracts of land in the midwest, and getting free electricity and telephone in perpetuity. The land reform meant to benefit the poor was, instead, used as a land grab by the rich. This was all part of a fairly straightforward plot to manipulate a worldwide disaster and profit hugely by it by being the only folks with the cash to buy up all those foreclosed mortgages for a song. One giant swindle on the part of our top financial heads. The proof is in the mass advertising campaign that tricked middle class folks into risking their futures on a gamble. It was all one big, simple, fairly straightforward, scam. Today everything they did would be illegal. Yay.
