You could say the Romans wrote a TRUNK-ATED version of their victory... π

"There's never enough time to do it right the first time, but there's always enough time to do it right the second time." β From a Chief Petty Officer I used to work for in the US Coast Guard

Her husband REALLY WAS a literal PAIN IN THE NECK....

"Rapid Unplanned Disassembly".

FWIW: The venerable DC-3 airliners have been so 'long-lasting' because they are unpressurized. Their airframes don't have to deal with the wear pressurization causes....
36
The Wright brothers were very methodical in doing research and experimentation FIRST, before building an aircraft. Perhaps if Mr. Morrell had taken that route, he would be remembered differently
34
R.I.P., Taffy. You done good, dude. As Chuck Yeager has said, YOU had "The Real Stuff"....

oceannavagator >>> "F.T.F.A." = "Fly The...Airplane" I work in aviation - although not as a pilot - and I have heard F.T.F.A. many times. The Eastern Airline L-1011 crash in the Florida Everglades around 1973 is a good example of that. The cockpit crew got preoccupied trying to troubleshoot a landing gear indication problem, and allowed the airplane to gradually fly into the ground....

As I mentioned in another comment, I personally worked on Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft in the US Navy and then the US Coast Guard. With that experience, it SOMEWHAT AMAZES ME that aircraft like the C-124, and the C-54 and C-47 earlier during the Berlin Airlift, were able to HAUL all the stuff they hauled while being powered by radial {reciprocating} engines. One of the IMPRESSIVE THINGS about the C-130 Hercules in the 1950s was the improved power-to-weight ratio afforded by turboprops {gas turbine engines driving propellers}.

HG: "According to Barnum, who didn't always represent events accurately..." Now THERE'S an understatement if ever there was one...π

In the B-52 crash - what little I know about it - the pilot in command had a history of 'reckless' flying, often ignoring safety regulations. He was never officially reprimanded as he should have been, and eventually his 'shenanigans' caught up with him AND THE OTHER THREE PEOPLE on the "BUFF" he was flying. Unfortunately.

This reminds me of something a Chief Petty Officer I once worked for in the US Coast Guard used to say: "There is NEVER enough time to do it right THE FIRST TIME, but there is ALWAYS enough time to do it right THE SECOND TIME."

Like what Chuck Yeager called the folks in the USAF who maintained the aircraft: "The REAL Stuff".

Helium Road >>> Here's some trivia for you: If you watch Slim Pickens as he says that, it looks like he says something other than "Vegas". I noticed that years ago myself. When they filmed the scene, he actually said "Dallas", as in Dallas, Texas. President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas just before the movie premiered. So Kubrick changed the dialog to "Vegas".

I β€οΈ AVIATION! EDITβ FWIW, I was born and raised in St. Petersburg, Florida. My first full-time job, from 1979 to 1980, was working the line crew at "Bay Air Services" at Albert Whitted Airport. That airport is very close to the site where the "St. Petersburg - Tampa Airboat Line" operated from. ALSO FWIW: My job at Albert Whitted... "Seems a thousand centuries ago." -- APOCALYPSE NOW [1979]
