  1.  @iakona23  The United States was interested in only the SW which was not only an isolated and distant, unincorporated portion of Mexico and had only 2% of New Spains population during the Mexican War. Actually the US conquered all of Mexico, and returned the heartland, it's core back to Mexico under the Treaty. Spain had claimed vast territories unable to finance and control. Mexico claimed those isolated and very distant territories after independence from Spain which it did not colonize, and also was unable to finance and control. While many Mexicans may need the United States, the United States does not need to incorporate Mexico, same as in 1848.

The Spanish set the model for Indian Laws in the SW and the country went into a civil war for Immancipation, today all have equal rights under the law.   9. United States Indian tribes are the luckiest of all in the Americas. Reparations, soverign lands, federal Indian laws to protect them, enterprise backed by US federal dollars with individual royalties from commercial profits, and federal tribal funding in the multi millions annually. In fact US Amerindians are the most satisfied group as a people as US Americans. And have never had it so good. It was not Great Britain who set the model, it was Spain who provided the peaceful Pueblo Indians in New Mexico legal land grants as early as 1700 along with tribal self governance, which the United States goverenment later honored under US Indian Law, Acts or what have. The United States goverenment provided the Bureau of Indian Affairs in early 1800s and US Indians have since slowly but surely prospered.

As the indigenous were already doing these atrocities to each other before colonization. No one is glorifying war. Just pointing out that war is part of human existence all over the world. Conquest is a fact of life. There is no utopia anywhere but in dreams. The human psyche of centuries ago was of cruelty and survival. We are fortunate that we have a different outlook today in the USA.

Exploration and battles claimed lands, in fact enemy Indian tribes helped Spain defeat other tribes. Those parts of New Spain territories gained independence from Spain to become the young Republic of Mexico after 300 years. The United States conquered Mexico's entirety and traded off Mexico's core for the SW under a Treaty. Nothing was stolen but in revision history.

Spain colonized only a few towns in today's SW, to keep out the French and Russian; the Spanish lived apart from the Indians by Spains policy and did not merge cultures; and assimilation to the Indian was not the plan. Spain allied with the Pueblo Indians and later Comanche against other Tribes as Apache and Navajo. Indians died, not because of genocide, or anymore genocide then among enemy tribes centuries before Spain crossed the ocean. Indians died from exposure to European disease, and from Indians killing off weaker enemy tribes. The stronger defeat the weaker. Human nature. Killing between Spain and Indian was a two way street. Indians were nomads following resources for survival and did not have a concept of land ownership. And adopted European advanced technics brought to America. Later after Mexico became a nation, the SW Indians fought battles with Mexicans. As the SW Indians had an inherent border before Spain or the United States.

Borders started with the United States becoming an independent nation in 1776, followed by Latin American countries gaining independence starting in 1808 establishing their national borders. There had been treaties, land purchases, and wars resulting in border changes. Since back in the 15th century there were no borders to cross, so that's s irrelevant. Why look at a 15th century world with 21st century lens...so if lands were crossed over, that was life back then. There were no laws, no human rights. The populion back then squatted wherever.... Indians did not have a concept of ownership, many were nomads and tribes fought for in particular local geographies for resources to survive.

All Americans living in the SW during the SW Mexican Period became Mexican citizens, be they in Texas, California or New Mexico because they lived in what was then Mexico for 25 years, under Mexican law as Mexican citizens. In fact they had more respect for the Constitution than Santa Ana, who ripped it to shreds.

Why slant the 1800s with modern day lens on foreign policy. Actually the Texan was no more foreign than the Mexican in the SW as Mexico had just claimed the land and there were more American Texans in Texas then Mexicans since Mexicans had not yet migrated north to Texas. Additionally Texas was not foreign land to American Texans in Mexico. They were there legally as land grant settlers authorized by Mexico's goverenment. Any American living in California, New Mexico or Texas during the twenty five year SW Mexican Period became Mexican as they were citizens of Mexico. Mexico abolished slavery which was later exempted in Texas by President Guillero. As was the situation in Mexico, the government was inconsistent, swaying this way then that way, internal revolutions. As far as Texas anti slavery laws, Mexico did not enforced the law. Had the goverenment wanted to enforce, it was up to them to do so. But it was far from terrorist activity.

It's the Mexican Indians whose lands were stolen by the Mexican goverenment and they have no sovereign lands as do the California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas tribes.

The Spaniards developed Mexico City ( hospital, libraries, European architecture, colleges, Christianity) into the most advanced area in all of America by the time Anglo Saxons were barely reaching Jamestown. Perhaps Spain made the mistake of merging the New Spain native into their society, civilizing them and 300 years later, Mexico gave the native political power.. United States, New Englanders, on the other hand keep the native to live their own world, did not merge them into Anglo culture or give them political power. To date US Indians are still considered tribes in their own sovereign reservations which are self governed.

The fall of Spanish America is inclusive of many factors, for one, Spain claimed too much isolated territory it was unable to control, too many internal revolutions among races the Spanish merged into it's culture and vice versa, leading to cultural national complexities. The Spanish, in truth, Latin America is primarily Indian, while the Spanish claimed Islands are primarily African. Spain discovered Tenichitlan, better known as Mexico City, left in in ruins to be rebuilt by the Spanish. . Had Great Britain found the Aztec, they'd have done the same, killed them and would have displaced the Indians just as they did in the United States east coast. The Spanish as vile as life was in the 16th C, at least viewed the Indians as humans. Not the English. In fact by the time the English settled Jamestown, Spanish law prohibited abuse of the Indians. The Spanish were no different from the Indian -- warriors, invaders, worshipped a diety, raped, pillaged, killed their own and back in time, no one had sanitary values. People lived with nature and bathed when the opportunity presented itself. In fact, the Spanish were civilized, had superior weapons, conquered the Indian by stategy. And were in shock at the Indians piercing the heart and eating the human flesh of their own. Mexicans did not enter the picture until after 1824, primarily Mexican officials to remove Spains flag and plant Mexico's new flag, during the Mexican Period of 25 years, same with New Mexico and Texas. Arizona was not colonized by Spain during the 275 year Spanish Period of the southwest. Mexico did not colonize the SW or conquer the SW Indians. Mexicans did migrate north after Mexican independence and established towns in U.S /Mexico border areas, after the Mexican American War. Even during the 25 year SW Mexican Period 1824-1846, it was primarily Mexican goverenment officials who came north quasi goverening the SW. Most Californians were Spanish colonists since 1770, having conficts with the newly arrived Mexican officials, and later the Californians, were protected under the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, were allowed to stay in California and become United States citizens. California shortly became a state, under the U.S. flag, Mexico was defeated and headed back to Mexico. State of California was compromised of both Spanish and English speaking legislators, proceedings were carried out biligually, with interpreters for a decade or so. Same in New Mexico, except under a Territorial Period until becoming a state in 1912. Texas was similar but had gone to war with Mexico and became Independent Texas by Anglo settlers. In fact Anglo Americans had settled the SW in 1821 before Mexicans. And the Mexican goverenment brought Mexicans north to battle Americans in California and Texas during the war. New Mexico and parts of California were easily defeated without battles.

MX lost the land after 25 years. Mexican people took their land back--What land, their land is in Mexico.

Under Texas Mexico, it went by Mexican law, temporarily. It has actually been through Native, French, Spanish , Mexican territories, Texan Republic and finally US American. So Texas is a mix of many ethnicities from native to Europeani.
