  1. Thanks for this teardown Eric. I like many others on here have been curious to see the innards of a Skyactiv engine. Nice to see Mazda banished all the Ford defects of the MZR series. Shows Mazda still has the knowhow when there's no outside interference. I'd love to see you get your hands on a K-series engine. I still have a 323 hatch with the factory 2.0 KF V6. Such a sweet engine that just loves to be revved like crazy.

  2. Having watched nearly all your teardown videos now, this has to be the top. The shear amount or damage to the block and oil pan is unprecedented. Adding it all up. the fact only one piston/rod assembly barely survived, that most of the rods removed themselves from the crank, and the the wrist pins off the 5 broken rods either were smashed to nothing or left the building entirely? There's no question, this has brought new levels of destruction to the channel. Truely amazing. Thanks again Eric! Edit: forgot about the heads being wrecked too! What a mess!

  3. Hi Eric, thanks for another great video. In the last few months I've started going through your entire teardown history and have watched most of them now. You've definitely got a knack for making a simple snappy and witty video without any BS. Keep it up. This engine was definitely a bit more complicated and unusual than your average teardown, and I quite enjoyed it for what it revealed. Love that you're trying to maintain some variety. As far as future teardowns go, I'd love to see any of the following: Toyota: 4AGE/GTE/GZE 3SGTE Nissan: RB20/25/26 (twin cam preferred) Mazda: KF-DE, KF-ZE, KL-DE, KL-ZE, KL-G4 Subaru: EZ30, EZ36 Thanks again, keep up the good work

  4. A friend of mine has had a Tribeca with the same engine the last couple of years. It was given to him by his parents. Unfortunately it had a Thermostat that wasn't opening and it breached a gasket. He used a stop leak solution, which helped for several months, but it's done now. These are meant to be great engines, but they need their maintenance, or they will fail. I'm surprised you have so much trouble finding one tbh. Here in Australia, they're easy to find. I actually pulled my EJ engine apart because it failed leakdown and always idled a bit rough. Had pitted valve seats, causing and exhaust leakage. Thanks for the teardown Eric. It may not have been catastrophic (although the rust and corrosion says otherwise), but it was certainly interesting. If you ever do an EZ36, be aware they have angled rod caps, so you don't have to deal with the usual Subaru nightmare.

  5. @TassieLorenzo  Bentley's never used a BMW engine. VW bought the Bentley/Rolls Royce factory, but got caught out as the deal didn't include the Rolls Royce name. That was still owned by Vickers. BMW purchased the name only, and started a whole new production line design team etc. for Rolls Royce. The two are totally unrelated.

  6. Hey Eric. As a hard working parent only a couple years older than yourself, I've often wondered how you keep up with such a schedule. Clearly your wife Megan has been a big part of what has made this all work so far and will continue to do so. Don't ever let that woman go whatever you do. She's gold. I'm glad to see you're making some moves to make life easier for yourself and sustain what you do, but be able to spend more time with your family. I envy you, and you deserve this reward for all your hard work. Maybe you don't feel you deserve it, but great people come in all forms, and yours is both unique and special. Love your work. P.S. also got more than a bit excited when I saw the KL Mazda engine on the rack. Really looking forward to that one. Still driving my KF powered 323 atm. Though it's old and not super fast, I still love it

  7. At the point this engine was yes. Remember though, a lot of the ancillary components were already gone or were loose. No water pump, no wiring, no turbos etc. Watch a couple of those teardowns with everything in place, you may not think quite the same.

  8. I actually had a similar thing with my Subaru EJ255. This just has a pump to all the exhaust ports in the head, which operates on cold starts. These were completely blocked, and the car had done only 182,000km (or about 120,000 miles)

  9. @andrewhouse237  I don't think it matters how well you try and clean it once there's buildup, it's hard to get rid of completely. There's always hidey holes for deposits, which this didn't have. I pulled apart my subaru engine not long ago. Bought it with 120,000 kms (80,000 miles) Had done over 60,000kms (or about 40,000 miles) in my hands and burned about a litre every 5,000km (3,000 miles). I always changed the oil at this interval too. You could see where deposits had been cleaned away inside the crank case, but there was still a significant amount of buildup in other spots. There was a few issues with the compression rings on this engine and the bores it turned out 2 cylinders were not completely round from factory. Currently having it rebored 0.5mm over, because it was out that much.

  11. @michaelcliffe6545  that's not true. They're mainly used to improve NVH. Ever heard that gear whine on a race car? That's because the gears are straight cut, where as road cars generally have helical cut gears, just not on oil pumps very often.

  12. @FutureDreamZz  I cleaned them out with small flat blade screw drivers, a straight pointed pick tool, and lots of carbie/thottle cleaner. I have the heads off, and valves out though. Don't think you could do it anything with the engine assembled. Could still be cleaner, and the heads will be hot tanked.

  16. I was looking for a comment regarding the service interval. Seems too many of these modern engines have intervals that are way too long. The amount of varnish considering it was serviced as scheduled says it all.

  17. Other than the later Ecoboost V6's you've torn down Eric, I don't think there's a Ford engine I would willingly buy. This is definitely another one. What a complicated nightmare this must be to work on in a vehicle.

  18. @rossrogers7058  I'm not on about how they run, and lets be honest here 136,000 miles isn't that far for a diesel. I hope it lasts a lot longer than that. No I'm on about how much of a bitch that thing looks to work on, not to mention the amount of plastic used in its upper assembly. Not a fan.

  21. Not 100% on this, but think it's once for where the tops of the bolts clap onto the head, 2nd for releasing the threads going into the block.

  27. Thanks Eric for something new and interesting again on the channel. I personally like it when you try different engines (if I'm honest I'm a bit bored of seeing GM V8's in particular). I'd love to see something left of field from a different brand on the channel. Say something from Peugeot/Citroën, Renault, Mitsubishi, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Landrover (older pre-Ford stuff), Suzuki, Volvo etc. Anything totally new is what keeps me coming back more than anything. Of course it's always entertaining with your witty quips. Keep it up Eric

  31. @spamcan9208  they really do. It's not real fast by modern standards, but I love the sound every time I put my foot into it. Was originally going to sell it, but after driving it again full time for the last 9 months, I'm not sure I can bring myself to.

  36. Interesting side note about these engines. They were more commonly installed in the 2nd gen. M35 Nissan Stagea in Japan with the AWD, and were optionally turbocharged. We had a lot of them imported here in Australia, but tellingly I haven't seen one on the road for a very long time now. Parts availability was an issue with these. Thanks as always Eric, hoping to see that KLDE (or maybe ZE?) that you have lurking in your shop some time soon 🙂

  37. Thankyou for this video. I've been pulling my EJ255 apart and noticed this issue with the ends of the rings being flat. Definitely will be replacing them and re-gapping them. Think I dodged a bullet.

  39. I don't know what it is about BMW wheel hubs, but they seem to have a horrible habit of locking the wheels on. Used to have to kick the crap out of my the wheels on my ex-wife's E90, every time I took them off. I'd make sure the hubs were clean and dry every time I worked on it too. If I had to deal with a BMW again, I'd be putting anti-cease on the hubs.

The Kia had good cams. Did this have good anything? Speaking of which, we only saw one cam. What was the other one like? Didn't think the Kia would be knocked off the mantle so quickly!

  45. That bearing material definitely wasn't the usual paste, it was more like bearing cream. You could scoop that up into a jar and sell it as a soother for the owners hurting hip-pocket 😂.

  46. I've seen some crappy engine designs on this channel, but it seems Ford keeps on coming up with the worst of them. They seem only too happy to try half-assed ideas like this that will just damage their reputation further. It makes an MZR/Ecoboost 4 cylinder look quality.

  47. Real pity. It seems odd to me that you can just have a Junk title applied without specific reasoning, yet they won't let you change it. If it was recorded that it has significant chassis damage or something I would get that, but clearly not the case here. Stupid. Also I would never have an auto one of these. Would be like having sex with a full body condom on

  48. I was quite excited when I saw this pop up on my feed. Thanks to Josh and Eric for this very interesting teardown. I've always had a bit of a fascination with these V8s, more so the later twin turbo units that have enormous torque. I'll bet the original 1950's design was a lot easier to work on than this later model Frankenstein. I wouldn't mind betting the original used Whitworth bolts and screws. This probably translated into the unusual metric sizes that this later engine was adapted to.
