Speaking of Intel, they can't catch up with TSMC and Samsung. In order to catch up, they have to retrench 15K employees as per recent news.

No wonder, shabu originated in Japan. This scourge once hit the Philippines and created unnecessary street executions due to rampant drug pushing and addiction.

First Pacific invested in the Philippines for the Telecommunication business. SMART telecom became one of the biggest duopoly along with Globe Telecoms. Its chairman used to work in Hong Kong's First Pacific before investing in the Philippines.

Right now most poor farmers who benefited in the land reform program still lives in poverty for so many factors: 1. Farm to market 2. Middlemen, mostly downgrade the price of their produce. 3. Money lenders (legal and informal) that charged high interest rates. 4. Farm technology adaptation. You can add other factors that is not mentioned above and by Asianometry.

I've worked at Intel when they were very strong in the 90s. The rallying cry in one of our training is "Only the Paranoid Survive" from Andy Grove's book.

I had a Sharp microwave/ convectron oven too that lasted for more than 15 years. My family enjoyed using it as we could bake conventionally and cook microwaveally. Too bad I can't have it repaired as spare parts became unavailable. Their other products lasted longer or durable during the 80s up to the early 2000s. The last product that I still have with them is a fridge where I can open the door either left or on the right side. We still use it and have been going strong for more than 10 years.

@fffUUUUUU Potatoes is hard to grow in the Philippines, Sweet potato is okay. One thing that need to change with my countrymen is our mindset that we switch to potatoes and wheats as well. Our habit is that we eat rice 3 meals a day! It is a hard habit to break.

And it ended up that it's not feasible to build a fab in the desert. Even the GF Chengdu fab was abandoned.
10
@kayakMike1000 If you like wafer fab mfg. , withstand stress as some of us works 12hrs a day, in 3/4 or 4/3 a week, 2-3-2 pattern and willi g to work changing shift, day or night pattern.

You should promote Gaolian as it is a Taiwanese liquor better than Baiju! Anyway Moutai is expensive.
9
I'm surprised thad Uncle Bob Tao acquired Singapore citizenship then later on renounced it back to be Taiwanese citizen again.
9
Singapore also have a desalination plant.
9
Same situation with me and my colleagues. We encountered power dips in the past. We have recovered broken tools, controllers become faulty, vacuum trips, wafer crashed etc. If only the company continously maintained and invested in back up UPS, for our tools...

How about intellectual property piracy thru " technology transfer"?

It will be hard to do it back there unless there is a shift on : 1. Labor cost as it is still humanly intensive job. 2. Work Culture change. 3. CHIPs Act includes IC packaging, Final Assembly and Test.
7
Keep it, restore , and might be expensive when auctioned.
7
@andersjjensen Me too. " Circle of friends" mentality like mafia.

My first Adidas shoes in the 70s were made in Formosa. I'm not kidding; the tag below the tag shoes indicates that.
7
We have a college nerdy jokes in the Philippines who take Electronics Engineering. NPN - "Na Pasok Na"( Already penetrated) PNP- Pasok na Pasok"( Fully Penetrated).
6
@weksauce Then we in Singapore turned gay?????
6
It's the same with China. Their chip industry lives because of massive support from the CCP government. They are currently focusing on dominating that industry because of the trade restriction with the US and EU. They are doing anything they can to dominate that sector, including hook and by crook approach.
6
One factor of the demise of the Australian car industry is the export competitiveness. Thailand became a car export hub for Asia, Australia and Oceania.
6
That was in the 70s and late 80s.
6
I remember a Suntory commercial in the 70s in the Philippines: " Suntory, Suntory Red Whiskey, De Qalidad!"
6
I remember the Philippines as a rice exporter, but became an importer for numerous reasons: 1. Profit from rice production is very low. Thus, rice lands were turned into other profitable options 2. Adoption of newer technology to have higher rice yield is slow. And atbp.
6
Yeah, like some of them worked at GFs. And transferred the TSMC Management culture which I think is....
6
I remember Altera in a Semiconductor assembly company. Initially we have difficulty assembling it in Die Attach and Wirebonds tools: Their choice of leadframes gives us initial headaches as we needed to re configure our tools mechanically!
6
So this is where SGS begins. Now, SGS -Thomson or ST Microelectronics.
6
NEC really missed out! They have the 16bit gaming rig that was better Than NES and SEGA in the late 80s. Should have use it as a microcomputer base system.
6
I See now how!
6
Are we Nerds?

I remember that Atom. It was Intel's failure to get into the mobile chip business.

The Mercedes vans made by Ssangyong easily breaks down according to the Mecedes repaire centers.

Our legacy fab is still using it!
5
@TheVanillatech Maybe we were focusing on the inside the country news rather than worldwide?

That was what I commented, too. I don't know why Cray computer became well known in that movie!

1. My thinking about this is somewhat like the same strategy done by Japanese car companies. They took advantage of the tax break, including the US Chip Act. 2. This could be a pre emptive move in case China takes over Taiwan?
5
The great trap done by IBM to UMC and Chartered: Copper interconnect technology and gate first patent licensing.
5
I'm previously in semiconductor assembly and presently in waferfab assembly. Us Engineers pronounce it as Dee-ram S-Ram SDee ram though.
