Note that we had a significant combat engineer units in 1989 that can lay bridges or cross bridges. If Singapore strategy is mainly in defend, we don't need to have such capability. That's is the reason why, China would like to train with Singapore fighter pilots. Because China know that Singapore pilots are well train with Western experience pilots and had accumulated the latest war fighting doctrines. Whereas China had none of such experiences.
