Battery design has many trade offs. Unfortunately most of the time people only focus on energy density. There is also longevity - both in terms charging cycles and calendar life. Also temperature sensitiviy, and charging / discharging rate. Often, they leave out one of them and only emphasize the one impressive metric.

"PHEV are mostly driven in petro power, that is my opinion anyways" - Sir that is your opinion and it is false. "I don't see any advantage to PHEV..." - the advantage is clear. On rare occassions you have to travel long distance you don't have to wait around for charging. For other 95% of time you don't have to burn any fuel, and save 95% of emission with absolutely no range axiety at all.
8
I like PHEV more than BEVs. In emergency or urgent life situations you don't have 20 minutes to wait around charging even if you are lucky enough to be near a DC fast charger that works and not occupied. I drive a PHEV with 97% of miles in pure EV mode, and plug in every other day at home. I don't think it's worth sacrificing safety, and reliability in case of emergency to squeeze out the last 3% of emission. Stop being eco-evangelists, and be more pratical. Cutting 90 - 95% of emission is a huge victory already. Getting frozen to hypothermia when stuck in traffic in winter storm because you ran out of battery to heat cabin is not the risk worth taking when you live in a cold climate like I do. Sam is blowing fire risk of PHEV out of proportion. I can't find any credible source. I drive a Volvo XC90 PHEV, at least in my community, none had fire. Maybe it's isolated to BYD problem, and not something impossible to fix as technology matures.
8
ICE cars don't need heat pump, there is plenty of waste heat generated from combustion process to be used to heat cabin etc.
8
This has nothing to do with being PHEV. It's all Rav4s, it's the 12V battery clamp down problem. Sam, you should stop bashing PHEV at every opportunity. it's simply misleading.
8
I drive a PHEV and use 90% less fiel, not 50%. I only need fuel twice a year when i take road trips. Everyday i plug in and never start gas engine.
8
@Abebe345 It's not about how often you have to use it. It only takes one mistake to crash your car. It should be as easy to operate as possible to be safe. It is clearly disadavantageous with no stalk, and yet you are defending it as if it's some stroke of genius Tesla came up with cost cutting measure.
8
Except that the premise of driverless robotaxis are complete fantasy and will not come for at least 20 years.
8
@elapplzsl Yes, for some poeple like myself only drive 3 - 5 k miles per year, a Toyota Corola will last 30 years. I know some 40 - 50 year old military vehicles are still in use because they are only used for training excercises and maintained meticulously. So in a sense he is not wrong. It all depends on the usage and application.
8
They did. But brought it back when stock crashed to 52wk low
8
EV demand is slowing there is no sugar coating on it. The path to electrification is not a smooth one. They need to make EVs with less high tech focus. Simpler EVs that are easier to repair and keep for long term. Not everyone needs a computer on wheels.
8
Anyone who believe in "self-charging" claims didn't even finish highschool level physics and don't deserve to own a car anyway. Same can't be said with Tesla's FSD misleading feature name.
8
@byddf Nothing wrong with PHEVs if you plug in and use EV mode over 95% of time. It saves your ass on those 5% of time when you are in emergency and no time or can't find charger.
8
Ex30 has real physical door handles as opposed to most other EVs flush door handles that can freeze shut in swedish winter
8
@nguyep4 Tesla is increasingly relying on Chinese supply chain. When people realize 80% of parts in Tesla are made in China it'll lift the negative perception of all other Chinese breads around the world
8
You can't simply extrapolate charging cycles to calendar age. Battery internal chemistry degrades with time depending on temperature etc, independent of charging cycles.
8
Toyota actually owned big part of Tesla but sold too early thinking they couldn't possibly succeed.
8
Since when is subsidies are criminal? The US subsidizes its farmers, as with many other countries. EU subsudizes heavily on Airbus. I think government subsidies are all fair and game. Results may vary if a country can afford it.
7
@jb5music sodium battery cars still have less range. But if charging infrastructure built out range won't be as important. I'm all for sodium
7
@mikedelicus I never they hated Western culture. They just think their own is superior. They admire European cultures such as English and French. But they definitely think American cultural sophistication is really low and crude. They only respect American miltary strength, that's all. Culturally speaking, they don't think much of Americans.
7
@JebusHypocristosX I'm simply asking you what do you did on bad weathers. Why do you have to be rude and call me ignorant and foolish? Are you that hubrous thinking you are better than everyone else just because you have solar panels? I live in Ontario as well, and interested in how you did it and how much it cost. What was the total cost of installing the panels including the high pressure air system to clean out the snow?
7
The worst cars in China are the best ones in America. Poor Americans have to pay so much money for crappy GM and Ford.
7
You can't. Legacy autos will be live and well in the West thanks to the protectionism and "decoupling from China". It will take decades for the West to fall drastically behind China technologically to be forced to adapt.
7
It is the workers who are lazy
7
Elon is too busy chasing the dragon called FSD / AI robots.
7
Why so much anger against EVs? Are you worried they will make your petrol V8 cars uncool in a couple years?
7
@christophmartin5381 I don't know about that. Most of trucks I see here in North America go well above 110km/h
7
However, they will not be able to penetrate US and EU markets because of political blocks.
7
EV transition overall will be slower than expected especially in the West minus Norway. All these stocks will suffer in the next few years.
7
Japan should focus on what it does the best. Maid cafes and takoyaki
7
200k miles in 3 years is much different than 200k miles in 10 years. Calendar aging is a more significant factor than mileage. Im willing to bet 100k miles in 10 years will have more degradation than 200k miles in 3 years.. Thus EVs are more suitable for high utilization applications such as deliveries or Uber.
7
I watched many interviews and read many reports. None of the discuss the longevity or cycle life of Si-anode battery, as if they are trying to evade the subject. I read an independent study that they can only cycle about 100 - 300 times before swelling problems hit. they probably can improve on this figure, but not by much at least not even close to the current LFP batteries.
7
@sensibility3009 I worked in AI research for 10 past years, I don't see any theoretical frameworks that enables AGI. MIT worked on self driving for several decades, so is Standford. General concensus in academia is that you need AGI for level 4 or 5 full self driving. Tesla's Andre Karpathy leaving in 2022 is an indication that even the industry's best can't find a easy path to full autonomy. Tesla's current FSD lead doesn't have a strong credential or track record. Maybe if the Chinese has an ace up its sleeves, I don't see FSD come to reality for at least 10 years or more.
7
No EVs don't have to be computers on wheels. Tesla started the trend but you can use simple controllers to drive electric motors, it's not rocket science. BYDs lack autononomous features like Tesla, but it also has less complicated software therefore more reliable and will not "brick" the car. The more features you put in the more likely you have a bug to brick the car - ie. Tesla
7
False. EVs battery pack has calendar life of 10, maybe 15 years at most. Sure EVs can more miles in short amount of time with much less maintenance than ICE. But ICE can last longer in calendar years if moderately driven. Some ICE cars can last 30 - 40 years if well maintained and low mileage. No EVs can last that long no matter how low mileage you use. It's more a function of age than miles.
7
The problem with this is that GM/ Ford's truck's traditional customers tend to be old fashioned folks who don't care for high tech gadgets such as large touchscreen, complicated software menus, and GM and Ford are bad at software anyways, so instead of using their strengths, they are strenuating their weaknesses trying to compete with Tesla in vain because their customers rather have traditional physical controls, and simple user interface without having to deal with software delays and crashes. They would have made an EV truck with lower cost if they just kept all the controls physical like Toyota does, and will sell more.
7
Sounds like they already gave up on markets that lets Chinese EVs compete on level field. They will just focus on surviving in America and EU.
7
I lived in Japan for 5 years. I can understand why they are so adamant about hydrogen vs battery EVs, other than charging speed. It's because as a culture they prefer tangible things. They prefer to "refuel" the car with some liquid or substance rather than "charge" the car with invisible electricity. The same reason they still prefer using fax machines, buy CDs/DVDs. Paper currency is still common place instead of credit card or mobile payments. They just like tangible things. They have hard time thinking about abstraction, makes average Japanese uncomfortable.
6
I'm skeptical given the track record of Japanese companies not innovating. They usually over-promise and under-deliver.
6
The outrage is that Volvo EX30 is about $10k more in Canada than the US because it qualifies for iZev incentive
6
Why can't you just turn lanes assist off
6
In the next video Sam will admit he is also not real, but an AI generated avatar. Which explains why he can make videos every hour without sleeping or rest.
6
I think Geely is very hopeful. I bought in right after it announced the Zeekr 007 Golden batteries - showing its innovative spirit. Also with Volvo brand under its portfolio, it has a trojan horse into the western market.
6
More important question is does the US extradite American citizens to China if they committed traffic violations?
6
How did Japan go from the most futuristic to the most backward country in the world?
6
What do you do in winter when there could be days without sun. Also you have to clean out the snow covering the panels
6
Keep dreaming
6
I wouldn't say so. They are outdated tech, but quality is still decent for their ICE models at least. Toyota ICE cars will last longer than most EVs in number of years if mileage is not excessively high.
6
@turningpoint4238 HUD is not old fashioned and very cool and useful. Only reason Tesla doesn't have it is to save cost.
6
@gregdean8441 nobody wants to keep a fossil junk car for that long. pace of innovation my friend.
