Putin has said he accepts 500,000 Russian deaths in order to achieve his aims. I guess that's why there are no exceptions to the mobilisation - as they're only going as cannon fodder it doesn't matter if they're disabled. So nuking his own people won't worry him.

I believe there is a drone base in Crimea - which means Ukraine could be launching strikes against military targets in occupied Ukraine. What I struggle with is what to do about drone and missile strikes launched from Belarus? I think it's right that Ukraine takes out military targets in Russia, but Belarus adds complications.

@Withnail1969 Freedom has to be fought and paid for. You could just move to Russia - because if you don't help fight them, Russia will happily expand to where you are. Ukrainians are prepared to DIE to stop the Russians, and you're whinging about some money. Just shut up, pay your taxes, and be thankful that it's only your money going to the war zone.

Yes russia did expect to go unchallenged. They expected Kyiv to be taken within 3 days, and the rest of Ukraine to roll over in a few weeks. It's time we challenged them. They have been escalating since day one, as we have appeared weak, and they only understand strength.

Assuming for a minute that this might be a real attack - Russia will have to cancel its 9th May parade in Moscow too. There's no way Putin will attend. Can you imagine the look if Ukraine launch a dozen drones across the border, towards Moscow. They wouldn't need to get within 500km before Pootin would be whisked away by his security in the middle of the parade. Internationally, the visuals of that would look so bad (for Russia).. No, if this is real, Pootin won't poke his nose out of his bunker for a month or two.

@michaeljohnston980 "Whose country is being demolished?" It's a bit of a own-goal isn't it Michael. Russia may be inflicting a lot of infrastructure damage on Ukraine, but it's also doing a huge amount of damage to itself. Most of its best weapons are gone. Its most lucrative trade (with the west) has gone. But most importantly it has lost around a million of its best people injured, maimed, killed or immigrated.

I don't know who sabotaged the Nordstream pipelines, but I'm glad someone did. It enabled Germany to stop its hand wringing and finally fully support Ukraine. If I had to put money on who did it, I'd have guessed in was Poland.

@Apollonos You are so right. What a coward Putin is. Even Girkin called him a "cowardly mediocracy". Putin hoped to go down in history as the man who built a 'greater Russia", instead he will likely go down as the man who finally brought Russia to it's knees. Zelenskyy on the other hand, will go down in history among the great wartime leaders. Thank-you Mr Pootin.

Why were "elderly Russian citizens" in a war zone in Ukraine? Are you sure they weren't Russian troops in disguise, trying to sneak away before being sent to slaughter on the front lines.

@PoBx100 There aren't any Ukrainian nazis near Nova Kahovka. But there are Russian forces under instructions from the Nazis in Moscow. They must be the ones you mean when you say nazis blew up the dam. What "evidence" are you rabbitting on about. The only evidence is that it was blown up from the inside - and therefore by Russia.

Not quite the same. Russia broke the Budapest deal that guarantees Ukrainian sovereignty. I don't think USA broke any international agreements by supplying aid. Nonetheless a good idea. But here's a better one. How about Russia withdraw from Ukraine (and pay compensation) to prove to Sweden and Norway that it is a safe neighbour. Then they won't feel the need to join NATO.

I agree. Ukraine must not be forced/coerced into compromise. I also feel that there should be no compromise to allow Putin to save face. Putin should be forced further into the corner he has painted himself into. Putin needs to be toppled. We can face whatever issues his replacement might present when they arise.

@auggieeast Getting the Donbas back would be, as you say, not a bad deal. But at this stage I'm hoping they get a better deal that includes getting Crimea back. Time will tell.

@auggieeast At the moment what you say about Russia retaining Crimea is the minimum, would appear tobe correct. . But lets see what the situation is in a few months, in a year, in 18 months, and in two years time. As for testing a nuclear power, yes I think.we should take that risk. The alternative is sending the signal that aggression will be rewarded. And lets face it, if there is a full nuclear war, well it'll all be over quickly - as opposed to the slow grind of Russia annexing Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Finland, East Germany... Personally I'm hoping Russia will collapse and that might prevent both the quick death and the slow grind scenarios. Time will tell. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Slava Ukraini.

@auggieeast Again, what you say is true. But I fear you are negotiating away Crimea too soon. It may be that the war turns and Ukraine has to accept the loss of the five oblasts (and more). It may be that there is regime change (or total collapse) in Russia and Ukraine can get all five oblasts back. What I'm saying is that your "deal" looks good at present. Who knows what it will look like in time. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

That would be great, but Turkey controls the Bospherous, and in wartime bans ships from other navies from passing through. Although a member of NATO, Turkey is also a friend to Russia - so I doubt it would allow the US 5th fleet to enter the Black Sea. A shame really. I wonder how the Turkish navy would fare in a stoush with the Russian Black Sea fleet?

You forget that Putin forced Yanukovych to sign agreements with Russia, when he was elected after promising to move Ukraine towards Europe. You forget that Russian agents armed dissidents in Donbas in 2014. You forget that Russia sent disguised Russian troops in Donbas and Crimea in 2014. You forget that Russian forces shelled both Ukrainian and separatist areas of Donbas in order to really cement hate and distrust between Ukrainian forces and separatists. You forget that Russia spreads lies about "persecution of Russian speakers" by Ukraine. You want more things that you have conveniently forgotten.

What that tells me is Russia is perfectly capable of hitting targets in Ukraine with cruise missiles. When Ukraine received Himars, every day they would select and destroy Russian targets. Why doesn't Russia use cruise missiles to hit Ukrainian targets every day? I believe it's because the rumours are true - Russia is running out of missiles. Using S300 surface to air missiles to hit ground based targets also.suggests Russia is low on surface to surface missiles. Ahh well, maybe they'll get decent replacements from North Korea - ROTFL. Sadly Russian media also fails to accurately report the massive loss of troops Russia taken, along with the massive loss of military equipment and the massive cost to the Russian economy. Sadly, Russia is causing the massive loss of lives, not to the Ukrainian army, but to civilians (estimated loss of Russian speaking civilians in Mariupol being over 80,000 - you remember Russian speaking civilians, Russia came to "protect" them but instead killed them).

I think your interviewer should have confirmed that he didn't know who blew the pipelines. Even if it was UK, neither he nor I are in a position to know that. Personally I wondered if it was Poland. How can an attack on an out of use pipeline be considered as a "terrorist" attack. How can he be upset about the pipeline attack when Russia is constantly attacking energy facilities in Ukraine. What a hypocrite.

@andrew6978 Yes it is Andrew. The canal intake is upstream of the dam. About 100metres upstream. As the water level of the lake drops, the bottom of the relatively shallow canal will be higher than the water level and water will cease to flow towards Crimea. I have heard one estimate that that will happen in 3 days.
