  2.  @drdavehowell  You forget one very important issue Dave. Whilst statues etc may have been curated in the past, it most probably was for genuine reasons, such as to keep collections fresh & interesting - & by people who were genuinely interested in all aspects of history. However we are not really talking about curating in its literal sense are we? Nowadays we are in a cancel culture, books being taken from reading lists in schools & a clear desire to suppress British history & identity. Under such circumstances I can see a total eradication/destruction of such artefacts. Britain is so bad as you say, at exploring it's history as we are no longer a proud nation. We are full of people & institutions who appear to want to apologise for what we did hundreds of years ago. It would be foolish for us to pursue reparations from Rome, or indeed from the Danes for the rape & pillage of East Anglia - as we recognise that was just "how things were done" in those days - i.e. it was a culture of survival of the fittest. Britain has had it's moment in the sun with the Empire - we were unbeatable & should be proud - but we seem embarrassed by our past achievements in ways that other nations are not. Imagine Man City FC melting down all their trophies because they are embarrassed that their wealth bought the best players & facilities, to the detriment of other less well resourced teams - whilst forgetting that not very long ago they were in the lower leagues themselves. That's where we are heading in Britain just now. No pride.

  3.  @drdavehowell  Are not most statues of conquerors & heroes? My old school, named after a Viking, had a statue of him at the fore of his longship, no doubt ready to set foot on British soil....but from memory no-one cried, no-one called for its removal & no-one defaced it. Contrast that 1970/80's viewpoint to today when we see the likes of Nelson & Churchill vilified by a vociferous minority who would happily deface & destruct. I am not denying the "not so shiny" parts of our culture (I do not know how you have come to that conclusion) - far from it - and I will not apologise for acts which were of their time. We will never again conquer other nations, but we will sit by & watch our culture be eradicated by apologists whilst China attempts conquer by stealth, through influence & economic means. Universities & now, Independent schools as examples. Different way to the same ends & we will one day pay the price for this. I suspect that your politics are further to the left than mine. Annoyingly, people like you do have a knack of overthinking, navel gazing, over analysing issues of the day. You think it makes you sound educated, superior & somehow more worthy of opinion. I am not "embarrassed" in the slightest by drawing comparisons with football. I used that example to show the foolhardiness of disposing of the trappings of past success, but you sound like James O'Brien who often uses his new pet term "footballisation" in a similar manner to you, such is his obvious hatred of the working class & the fact that their vote counts exactly the same as that of his own. Have to go now, as the whippets need feeding, I'm nearly out of black pudding & I have to put some coal on t'fire.
