  2. Nietzsche was a highly complex and somewhat contradictory guy. I think McGilchrist put it best when he said Nietzsche is toxic...but that toxic things in the right dosage stimulate and fortify. You might say, if Nietzsche doesn't kill you he'll make you stronger. Yes, I do like the guy.

  10. 10:28 Taleb actually DID predict the '08 financial crisis, which may in fact have been just a pre-shock of what's to come. I'm not a doomsayer, but I certainly don't see the level of stability in our system that either of these guys seem to. There's far too much artificial manipulation going on.

  15.  @jonhurley3467  Capitalism certainly has its faults and I haven't seen anyone deny that. But it's the best system we have (so far) in that it's the closest one to nature. In pursuit of civilization, things seem to go most smoothly with the least deviance from nature and its laws.

  17.  @roboform100  Sure. I'll elaborate by saying that if you don't see how this video is a product of JP's anger, and even the tweet itself (to some degree), then you may have issues of your own. This is an angry human being who's now thrust himself back into crusade mode. Even though I feel he was right to go into that mode years ago (very different scenario), he's now fabricated a white whale that's sure to destroy him, because that whale is really his own pride. I can't believe I ever followed someone who can't admit when he makes a mistake.

  18. @yuh No, I have my deal breakers and he just found one of them. I still appreciate some of Peterson's older lectures and feel they have lasting value, but I'm done with the guy going forward. He fails to live by his own words and instruction. That's cause enough to lose respect for anyone.

  19.  @benforshizzle  The ideas that finally quashed organized religion in the West and got us to start carrying our own water (psyches) as Jung might say. Postmodernism was a necessary stage of disillusionment that put humanity in its place while destroying all places. Where we choose to go from here is up to us. But the point is that we can really go anywhere now that the constraints of dogma have been lifted. It's a beautiful thing for those who survive the nihilism stage. We get to choose what's sacred, set our own values, create our own myths and live out those myths as we see fit.

  23.  @jonmacdonald2193  Nobody said anything about worshiping anyone. Peterson is transcending conventional patterns of thought and providing glimpses of an underlying structure of reality. Nietzshe shattered our false conceptions and now Peterson's trying to reveal the truth of the matter.

  26.  @mreyesxix  Yeah, I think Blackwood mentioned something about reading what's most transformative. There aren't enough hours in the day anyway. There are about a dozen books that I owe my life to, including Man's Search For Himself (Rollo May) and The Road Less Traveled (M. Scott Peck).

  35.  @josephmiller997  I don't disagree on any particular point. But just as organized religion can crowdsource wisdom, it can crowdsource anti-wisdom and lead people astray. My thought is that organized religions start off well and become perverted and corrupted over time. Kind of like everything else.

  39. I disagree with the need for suffering in relation to meaning. I think we need pain but not suffering (which, to me, is chronic pain). I prefer Yuval Harari's take on suffering. To me, it's the thing that we have to rid the world of. Only then will we truly know we've made progress.

I have no problem recognizing and addressing my mistakes or shortcomings, but I would never label them "evil." Such would certainly bring me to dwell on them and/or attempt to excise parts of me I don't yet understand. It's all within us. Integrating the shadow is the means by which we set it free...set ourselves free. Special note: Not all suffering is self-induced; and to take responsibility for imposed suffering just because it gives you a sense of control is tragic and destructive.

  49.  @iankclark  No. Nietzsche was dead on about the death of God. Secular society has desacralized everything so it's up to the individual to decide what's sacred. Agree about the wisdom of the ages, but nowhere did I even hint at the concept of utopia. Write your own story and live it.

  50.  @iankclark  It's not utopian in that it's an individualized liberation. In that sense it makes utopia impossible because there's almost no chance of everyone going the same place. Your story can be complete fiction. Many people who achieved greatness would be considered highly delusional in retrospect. Use your illusion.
