With batteries at current prices wind and solar are not affordable. The high peaks you report require shutting down base load generators - wasting money and the plant. I was a big proponent of wind around 2000. Then I started looking deeper. Wind electricity is low cost. Until it has to be dispatchable. In the Navy I used to run Nuclear Reactors. I know some about the grid. BTW Germany imports a LOT of electricity from Poland. Poland is Germany's backup. Very convenient for cooking the books.
