@MandyAustin-nl4cn not being ruled by incompetent Etonians would be my call, but I can't speak for everyone
1
I hope about half of the current Conservative vote do vote for Foris Barrige
1
It is impossible to create an independent committee while the Tories have a majority. They will always regulate to corrupt it
1
Agreed. A march alone will most likely be ignored, but as a very visual statement as part of a wider campaign, thousands of people in unity is a powerful symbol
1
There's a lot of crying wolf going on, and that really doesn't help. When they want "playing music" to be treated with the same severity as violence, the real threats get lost in the noise
1
What power? Our water is largely owned offshore, as is our electricity. We get most of our food from overseas. We make little of value, and even that little is shrinking further still We have been sold out and sold off. Unless we can find a way to reclaim our infrastructure, all the sovereignty in the world is useless
1
@brachiator1 there is a difference, but an uninspiring one. We are picking slow decline, or spectacular implosion. We want hope and progress, but nobody is offering it
1
There's always politics in the economy. Someone is going to be favoured more than another, and that's unavoidably a political decision
1
I hope we all agree that if you injure or drug someone, so they are in agony, then we call that torture, and it is morally wrong Is it really so different if the agony is caused by illness, and someone actively forces the sufferer to continue suffering? That still sounds very wrong to me
1
I can see why the LibDems wouldn't want to be seen as a haven for large numbers of ex-Tories, but I'm convinced the only reason Rory Stewart isn't a LibDem already is he can't break the habit of seeing himself as a Tory
1
@ER1CwC Interesting and very credible point - maybe he could be joining the Starmerite flag-waving incarnation of the Labour party then, assuming this incarnation settles in as a long-term identity!
1
@ER1CwC agreed - like I said, it would have to last long enough to be established. If Rory's children take after their father, maybe they'll be future Labour MPs?
1
@ER1CwC never say never, but it feels like the left are done with Labour and largely joining the Greens. If Labour doesn't do something to recreate the broad church, I think this shift is permanent
1
I say the only person more dangerous than someone with an ideology is someone who claims to have none Everybody has one. If you think you don't, you have a big hole in your self awareness If you know you have one but wish to conceal it, then you're actively deceptive I'd much rather deal with people who can be open about where their priorities are!
1
@proteusnz99 definitely agree with that! Know your own ideology, but don't assume everyone else will share it 🙂
1
@proteusnz99 it's all part of self reflection on your ideological position 🙂 People rarely get everything perfect first time, after all
1
@proteusnz99 we have unfortunately aquired a myth that leaders can and should be near-perfect individuals who rarely are wrong, rather than desiring people who suspect they are wrong and intend to learn as much as possible to mitigate this It's a curious societal phenomenon!
1
@paulgibbons2320 there's some truth to that, but one definitely squeezes harder than the other
1
Economic migrants come on planes. Even if we went full machine guns and drowning on asylum seekers, it would barely be noticable in the figures, because legal, fully signed off immigration is very high And we do need the people. It's shameful that the government is happy to take the tax from all that work, but won't spend it on housing or hospitals
1
but if he did, and then people voted for him, isn't that democracy?
1
@marumaru6084 if you're saying that our democratic system isn't as representative as it should be, you'll get no argument from me! I am confident that there'll be no shortage of support for moving closer to the EU under a fair and representative system though 🙂
1
@alex_n8863 she wouldn't dare. The reaction would make the poll tax protests look insignificant in comparison!
1
@mda5003 a convenient excuse - what kind of "facts" would hit the filters,I wonder? Can you at least hint so we know what to google? Or is it something you know is nonsense?
1
@epincion in the article he is full of praise for the direction Reeves is taking. Why wouldn't he like her plans? "Fiscal discipline" is just rebadged austerity
1
@MandyAustin-nl4cn we vote our government every 4-5 years. Why should the people get a say in some policies, but it others?
1
@MandyAustin-nl4cn it has been accepted and done - now we democratically need to decide our future
1
@georgesdelatour and your source for this information?
1
Harehills caught the police off-guard, because there was no warning. That's the only difference
1
@DoggleBird 27 arrested
1
@DoggleBird priority has been given to convicting people who are threatening to riot again, which is just common sense
1
@T0NYD1CK Vote Leave never said anything about the Brexit Benefits being on the moon 🤔 Is that why nobody can find the Brexit Benefits?
1
@T0NYD1CK what do you think we need to do, that we are not doing?
1
@T0NYD1CK Go to Stormont and the Dail and pitch your plan then. I am sure your idea to solve the conflicts in Irish politics will succeed where hundreds have struggled
1
@T0NYD1CK I am glad you have solved the Irish Problen, I look forward to celebrating your success!
1
@T0NYD1CK well, interesting chat! Let me know if you get round to visiting Ireland and putting your plan into action 🙂
1
@T0NYD1CK it worked because we were all in the single market. Now we are two different markets That's it in a nutshell - what happened to your plan to go to Ireland and solve everything?
1
@T0NYD1CK but now there is, and we are outside it - if you want to have a say in the EU, you want to be a member!
1
@T0NYD1CK Asian nations are forming Asian trade blocks. South American nations are doing the same there We are the only nation chosing to be more isolated, when everyone is is grouping up!
1
You only become conservative if you have something worth conserving The Tories undermined their own foundations by only pandering to people who already owned stuff, and neglecting people who might have become future voters if they had been given more opportunities to buy assets
1
There is only one set of pipes to your house, so there is no market competition 🙁
1
@honberg193 I'd be interested to know what studies you're citing please 🙂
1
Teaching is a skill, and one we are pretty good at We should be making use of that skill just like any other - countries that grow a lot of food export food. We're good at growing knowledge 🙂
1
I despair at anyone who still votes for these corrupt, incompetent embarassments to the nation
1
@davidklyne5134 much as I would love to rejoin tomorrow, there's wisdom in wanting a 60% or even 70% majority It might take a bit longer to achieve, but it makes the mandate decisive once achieved!
1
@marksimons8861 it's almost like they knew they were committing arson on the UK economy 🤔
1
...and on the original point, if you want a viable opposition, the LibDems are right there, ready to go
1
and a majority in Scotland, and Liverpool... Let's wrap this up - everywhere except Lincolnshire. Pro EU are the majority now
1
It's the question at the heart of all sentencing - at the end of the sentence, have they learned and refprmed their ways, or will they do it again given the chance? It will always be a tough question
1
That, or it's a right-wing power struggle, where there's agreement on the authoritarianism, but nobody agrees on who gets to be supreme leader!
