@stephfoxwell4620 but what if I had an illness that is going to make every breath I struggle to take for however many months, or even years, I struggle on for a loving agony of torture? Are you comfortable insisting I suffer that fate?
1
Nige's only diaagreement with Neoliberalism, is that he's not at the top recieving the lion's share Once he's at the top, he won't change anything else
1
Arguably we've been selling the family silver for decades. 2016 was where we had a choice - acknowledge the old cupboards were empty and start building something new, or double down on the denial...
1
At least now were debating real policy rather than discussing nonsense like "wave machines to push away small boats"!
1
@Steve C it is a waste - why spend so much on hotels, when you could hire staff to handle their claims quicker, and let the legitimate asylum seekers work, and get failed claimants deported? Utter shambles from the Tories!
1
@dogglebird4430 I have not broken the law, do I get a Coutts account?
1
Yes - one coin flip isn't stochastic, but if you flip it ten times you can be confident you will gets heads, but can't predict exactly when This predictability at scale, so you know something is very likely to happen, but not the details of exactly where or when, is what stochastic describes
1
I view Brexit a bit like Godzilla. Defeating the monster is just the first problem. Then we have to rebuild everything it broke
1
A political party has the right to set standards If Lee doesn't want to stay above that bar, he's welcome to join another, or go independent
1
but what's left of Brexit, if you take away xenophobia and tax dodging?
1
If the campaign is tight and focused, I think it's the perfect time to try and get some Greens and independents elected There's only a small number being targeted, so this won't impact the majority of seats. Just a few where a difference is pragmatically possible
1
Aparently Rishi was talking about Starmer's record on major policies So apparently penises are major policy for Rishi. Explains what they were doing when they should have been focusing on economics, doesn't it?
1
@imSatnav that's the problem they have though! To stay in government, they need to pass a budget - if the budget fails, it's a failure of confidence in government and Parliament dissolves Do you think this mess of factions and backstabbings could get behind one shared budget?
1
@djbogz1921 Fair, there should be scrutiny of the authorities. Sounds like they are not doing their jobs properly here
1
I would say the opposite. History shows that once a party truly falls under FPTP, it becomes an existential change they never recover from If the Tories ever become the third party in Westminster, it is unlikely they will ever recover
1
It's exactly the right time to focus on getting people outside the two party system elected, by focusing efforts where there's a suitable candidate with a realistic chance
1
My guess is a pivot to being Pro EU after losing the election after next
1
@LowPlainsDrifter60 sure, what are the key facts here? Let's have a starting point
1
@vinay7397 automated trains are fine in very controlled conditions. On less enclosed tracks, automated trains would be fine, until they tragically and spectacularly are not
1
@cherylemmanuel744 It's not the whole solution, but this would be a good start We need an example setting from the top. When our government goes around calling anyone who has the slightest difference of opinion an "enemy of the people", we can't be shocked if many people take that as permission to act that way too
1
@ProfessorTimWilson is that because there's no point engaging in nuanced discussion with Braverman, as she has never shown any interest or capability in doing so?
1
He's discovering that the UK doesn't have much of a safety net for people unable to get work Nobody deserves to be treated like they are in this position, but Fox is hardly alone. Millions of people are in the same position, or worse This is a societal problem, not a conspiracy against one actor who said some daft things on social media!
1
They do need funding from somewhere though - how would you fund politics instead? For me, I am OK with the donations, just make it transparent. Anything over £100 from one person has to be openly declared Then Shell or BP can donate if they like, but we know what we're getting if we vote for that party!
1
Regaining free movement isn't a cost 🙂
1
@padraigohooligan8363 yep. If you're going to complain that the banks are unaccountable, you also need to complain about every other shareholder-aligned organisation Which is a fair, if daunting, target. The privatised utilities might be the best place to start, I reckon 🙂
1
There is so much to dig into there, I would summarise my key thoughts like this - it will be something to account for in marking. If your grading system can't detect bluffers, it's not fit for purpose - it suggests we have a culture problem. Is education valued, or merely qualifications? If we have a culture that values education, nobody would even want to use ChatGPT in this way. However, when the goal is simply the piece of paper at the end, the temptation will be there
1
@DropdudeJohn and Joe Cox was murdered by a Brexiteer Still want to take the view that we judge a whole demographic on the actions of one individual?
1
@stevepi1 Lee Anderson's twitter feed and TV interviews are a perfect example. Wave a few non-UK flags and you're a hate march that needs locking up forever, but set fire to a town and it's merely a "legitimate concern being expressed" It's not even slightly subtle
1
Coffee Hunt is a dangerous spoonerism just waiting to happen!
1
@davidjupp961 I really hope they are dwindling, as the alternative isn't nice at all 🙁
1
@tony_w839 Suella and Rishi claim people have said it, but the only people I have heard say it in Parliament are Rishi and Suella!
1
That's what the campaign is doing - supporting Greens and independents who have a chance of winning, and focusing money and attebtion on them to boost their chances 🙂
1
@Tvjunkieful12 is there much of a centre any more? The status quo is failing a lot of people - people failed by the current system aren't going to vote for more of the same!
1
Because a significant number of our international treaties explicitly reference international human rights law as a foundation If we break that, we void so many trade deals and other mutual support pacts
1
@qetoun an example would be the Good Friday agreement, Human Rights section 2 It explicitly declares the ECHR as a foundation for the agreement. In turn, the ECHR asylum policy explicitly builds on the 1951 Geneva convention You can't undermine the foundation of an agreement without voiding that agreement
1
@qetoun treaties are funny things, as there isn't a grand international court. Pragmatically, there's nothing stopping a country breaking a treaty, except that other countries are going to know what we did. Maybe there will be immediate consequences. More likely, other countries just won't believe any promise we make Can we afford to be seen as an unreliable partner?
1
@qetoun could you go find your own country if you want to try a North Korea?
1
@charlieoscar09 "I don't want to become the North Korea of Europe" is my answer
1
@qetoun I covered what consequences come from treaty clauses that can't come from purely domestic acts I can't tell you if you consider that "superior" or not
1
@qetoun now you are misquoting me New laws take precedence over old laws. Superceding a treaty dependency has consequences that a purely domestic law doesn't, which is why a higher standard of care and scrutiny is required
1
@qetoun for the definition of 'good' that aligns with 'legally valid', but not necessarily the one that aligns with 'wise'
1
@stewie7338 I don't mind paying more, if people with a lot more than me also pay a lot more It just needs to be proportional - if you made a lot of money as part of this country during good times, you should be paying more when the country is in need
1
@stewie7338 our funding per-head is lower than other developed nations. There may be other problems, but we have to start by spending as much as countries with better healthcare spend
1
@stewie7338 what I am not seeing is how that's an EU problem rather than a Westminster problem. Other EU nations didn't have this happen to them
