  12.  @andirizaladiputra7333  no no there is a bit of confusion here with linguistics. maharlika, yes is from sanskrit and has cognate term with merdeka in bahasa melayu and bahasa indonesia but you guys use it as an adjective to describe independence like a country's sovereignty. in philippine languages like tagalog, we use maharlika as a noun because it is a noble class title. maharlika represented the feudal middle class elite of ancient states like Tondo because it meant kinda like prosperous freeman. the adjective meaning of maharlika is noble and aristocratic. this is why there was an event before such as the conspiracy of the maharlikas in early spanish colonial times because the remaining maharlika nobles wanted to overthrow the spaniards but failed.

  17. dont worry, every country has its differences. some even have even more different cultures within it. though dont worry, i always hear from japanese that you guys are always surprised about different countries even those of your neighbors. dont focus too much on the differences since you can always remember though that we are still asian countries close neighbors with each other so there are still values and behaviors that are observed to be similar, whether fully or partially alike.

  20. Raphanne those spanish words are no longer simply code switching to spanish. they are now included officially in the local language with its own local spelling. english though is still separate but there are a good amount that have become adopted and filipinized.

  21. ​ @brynhard  filipinos like to speak English any time instinctively when they want to speak formally/professionally, since it is the formal prestige language, but since he is being interviewed in Filipino and the topic is about helping the poor lower classes, they speak mainly in Filipino(Tagalog) but he adds in English phrases because he is also the owner of his small company that he talks about so he tries to speak professionally.

  26. it always surprises me that the japanese look so much like any other person here in my country in southeast asia. if i moved there, i feel perhaps around 70% of the time, they won't know that im not actually japanese. its a bit of a pressure though since they'll probably expect me to be good at japanese

  27. in my country, we find that funny too but our tv shows would never regularly daringly host that. might be too daring or extreme here but nonetheless funny. i believe some few shows also went for the japanese game show model here but it was lighter compared to some daring and perhaps more funnier acts and moving parts of japanese game shows

  29. invasion? lol they are using Filipino(Tagalog) and English. spanish loanwords have already been part of the local language, fused with Tagalog to make Filipino language from 333 years of spanish colonial times. English is used separately and sometimes being fused as part of informal speech since its been taught academically since american colonial period. all foreign loanwords are spelled and spoken in the filipino orthography as per the growth of the language. english does this too especially with its norman french latin influenced words.

  34. dont think to associate the chinese-filipinos who own big businesses here to be tied to china. theres a reason why its called chinese-filipino rather than simply chinese. chinese-filipino history spans centuries here and is tied as a component to philippine history. generations of chinese-filipino have been absorbed in the population for centuries enough that 30% of the whole filipino gene pool is of chinese descent. chinese-filipinos at least the newer generations stemming from the 20th century migrations despite seeming to still be a little culturally different consider themselves more filipino than chinese. there is a reason why they call those from china as "mainlanders" or PRC because today's china is more alien to them than the home they are in now.

  39. is it cuz u look more japanese than kayumanggi skinned pinoy? if u looked more darker pinoy, it would certainly be the opposite case as with other japanese filipinos ive encountered. in ph, the technique is always to use the local language with the usual accent and english codeswitching norms so u can dispel their thoughts that u might be foreign. you will notice it when they start to use pure english to you even when u know theyre not used to it when they think u might be foreign but since english is very normal in ph, you can quickly switch to tagalog or other local ph language and they will warm up to you fast. i myself am chinese filipino and look particularly chinese so when i stay quiet, people do it many times. sadly historically, it is the case for the historical japanese filipino community in ph as what you described that the war brought a heavy blow to the historical japanese filipino community, but i think you guys are too held back by fear of discrimination and are not confident enough to grab a hold of your japanese filipino identity in ph, since many opt to run away back to japan, whereas chinese filipino and even now, new generation of korean filipinos are finding success in ph, while japanese filipino is still rare and ambiguous...

In singapore, malaysia and indonesia, some places had enclaves but in other places like my country in philippines and others like thailand and indonesia, the diaspora is spread out into the populace and only in colonial times which had cultural enclaves such as the first and oldest chinatown in the world in manila but chinese-filipino history is more characterized with centuries of assimilation and sporadic replenishment of it from events in china that spur repeated influx of migration. Here usually, it takes only one generation in the least to the 3rd or 5th generation (in extreme cases) at most for chinese filipinos to naturally be absorbed and be untraceably be mixed in the populace. currently, 36% of the genepool has chinese admixture where most of whom don't realize that they do or only vaguely know since this ancestry was centuries ago in the 1800s or further. then only 1.8% are pure chinese which were replenished immigrants from 1900s. I believe in singapore its around 3/4s the population are historical chinese immigrants while malaysia has around 25%. I think these countries have a higher rate of might i say "purity" from i guess enclaves that have sucessfully developed and propagated though it is sad that some parts of their history involve racial riots and massacres because of this as if they were jews. here not as much of that. only like once or twice centuries back in colonial times when enclaves were institutionally established.

He's that kind of old grumpy man people elected to act tough and say all kinds of controversial things because the popular common people on the streets would agree with him rather than any prim and proper old politician, unbeknownst to the world that people outside of the country would not understand his humor. In that video where Duterte said that, beside him his fellow man laughed, but on the other side, the lady beside him was former president Gloria who was silently thinking how the world would comprehend what he just said.
