Interesting car. It definitely requires sturdier aftermarket clutch cylinder to not fail too often.

I think TC might have triggered the situation in first place but it probably limited how much the car got sideways after that. From my experience driving during the Winter here in Finland, I would say that you should have pressed the clutch fully down around 5:58 when the engine sounds like it could be already braking. When it's very slippery and you're going even a little bit sideways in RWD car (or a 4WD car with majority of the torque going to back), you definitely don't want any engine braking unless you're intentionally drifting with engine braking (which I guess is possible but very very hard). As traction control / stability control typically cannot increase the spin of the wheels, when the rear starts to slip because of engine braking, it's going to keep sliding unless you press clutch to release the engine braking ...or press slightly more gas if you're feeling lucky enough.

@frodo4087 "Having fun" on public road is fun until somebody crashes. Then it gets hilarious.
3
@hcoll See the part close the timestamp 5:00 – he already did over 10k miles without any kind of filter!
3
@itshappening100 When you have more money than brains, you don't need air filter.

I think changing the gearing was the worst part. You could increase boost with ECU programming only so one could argue that the expected user base of Type R might be doing that. However, replacing gears for a gear or two would require custom built precision machined parts to be swapped inside the gearbox. That's not going to happen by the real world customers.

10:28 Pro tip: the small arrow next to the fuel icon in the dashboard always shows where your filling cap is. Not all cars have that the arrow, though.
3
Great driving and the car is awesome. It was at times hard to notice that the 5th gear was missing because the gearing was tight enough. Imagine if the original Golf GTI would have been this car without a splitter and the spoiler!
3
4:50 It's interesting to see how little did he lift for the dirt on track.
3
I would say this counts as clickbait because you used the crying emoji (😭). If you had used something like 😉 or 😲 or no emoji of any kind, I would say it's legitbait.

11:55 The view would bounce quite a lot without video stabilization here! (Or was this simply neck stabilization?)
2
5:45 Seeing how long the indicator was to the right, I would assume that the driver has accidentally left the indicator on has already forgotten about it. You should never trust other drivers to do the sane thing when anybody can enter the track.
2
The director seemed to be superstitious and that very rarely results in sensible actions.
2
Great info about HANS devices. I wasn't aware that any product would have been classified for standard/basic 3 point harness in normal cars.
2
It almost seemed from the video that front and rear dampeners were not a good pair. It seemed that rear hopped up much faster than the front after compression which upset the balance of the car many times during the lap.
2
It's a damn shame that VW doesn't have any way to fully disable ESC from the standard cockpit.
2
GR86 was going very nicely around the track. Once you get improved brakes, the limiting factor is lack of engine power.
2
@nathannsxmarques9110 Well spotted! You can see a disconnected wire hanging by the shoe on accelerator pedal at 6:46.
2
I see front wheels were getting a lot hotter than rear tires. Do you think it was because of understeering or could you balance the temperatures more by changing tyre pressures only?
2
It's incredible how much better tires and brakes make a difference! And I guess that little wing in the rear might have helped, too, but I'm always a bit sceptical about such small wings doing much.
2
And obviously with all the lights turned off and no blinkers because that's the BMW style. If I had been in that car, every light of that car would be flashing and I'd be honking the horn while pulling the seatbelts tighter. The most insane part was that they were exiting the car while three cars were approaching the corner!
2
@keidicko I think oil lowering the octane rating is not an issue here because the engine was burning oil during braking only (that is, definitely not burning lots of gasoline at the same time). The biggest risk was lowering oil level so much that oil pump could catch air during high-g corners + causing oil mist on the track. This car would deserve an oil cooler and modified PCV system to avoid the smoke in the first place.
2
@Verybadbiker The E46 did what he could when the car in front of him went to the left side of the road without any signaling.
2
Now that's a proper sleeper car! All you need is fake "ABC Plumbers" or "Rapid Pizza" ads on the sides and rear to really blow minds. If that was my car, I would glue "TDI" badge at the rear to make it even more hilarious.
2
You should try to get official live onboard for #503. Looking at the live viewer counts, it appears clear the live feed for #503 would get more viewers than the all the other official live streams combined.
2
There's no need for V6 when you already lose wheel traction with turbo combined with 4 cylinder 2.0 16V. And 2.0 litre engine weights a lot less.
2
Nah, the cars were slowing down from 65 km/h to 40 km/h. Even a 30 year VW Golf could have decelerated fast enough with those speeds.
2
@zerooneonetwothree1872 Sure, he activated brakes way too late. Hopefully he wasn't looking at the phone or something similar...
2
Did the cars around you have cameras recording by any change? If the steering column failed during the corner, the resulting left front wheel movement might have caught on camera and would definitely explain why the car went nearly straight (and probably also explain ABS action).
2
100% agree. Counting frames from the start of the slide it appears that Misha was able to rotate about 300 degrees counter-steering in about 320 ms. Most people will not have that fast reactions, or at least fail to catch the car after wheels re-gain the traction.
2
@mattmorris2867 It's 50 fps video and when you count 18 frames from the slide to the steering wheel rotation you can count the time difference as 18/50 seconds or 0.36 seconds. And on desktop computer you can press K to pause the video and then comma or period to go one frame backward or forward. And to get the framerate for the video, right click above the video and select Stats for nerds: the framerate is after the @-sign.
2
@mattmorris2867 Definitely. Misha was barely able to avoid the crash so it was definitely poor driving for that moment.

The suspension seems to be really good! This would be really good stock setup for any car manufacturer and for American can manufacturer, this is superb work. And it seemed that there was no cooling down between the laps (the temperatures were nearly the same as and the end of the first lap) and the car coped with it without any problems.
2
Great driving!
2
7:28 It seems that the uphill segment was too short for this car.
2
This is closest to SpaceX in the Europe!
2
He seems to drive way out of the true limits of the car and still the rears of the other cars come up pretty fast.
2
The car is very nice and that was good driving but you guys have way more trust to the other drivers than I would have.
2
I think it's okay to allow repairs. The race is for most distance within 24 hours, not 24 hours of driving on the track. If your car is broken and weather causes red flag, consider yourself very lucky but keep repairing the car. The major problem with this race was that there was no clear decision made early enough about what's going to happen in case of weather. Just make rules clear! For example: - If track is partially covered by fog, there will be double yellows for those parts if that makes continuing race safe enough. - If race is red flagged, you can do repairs to your car. - If race is red flagged, it can be restarted at minutes :00, :15: 30 or :45. - The race will not be prematurely stopped but obviously a red flag within the last 15 minutes is going to prevent the race from restarting anymore because of previous rule.
2
I think this kind of car deserves a highly progressive suspension so that it's comfy to drive as a daily but it's strong enough to keep the suspension from bottoming out. And super high quality adjustable dampeners to make it go nicely with progressive springs.
2
@gianlucamoretti9564 Consider this as the minimum amount of details in memory to drive on that track fast.

Here's the link in case YouTube allows it: Bending Physics: Nevera Nürburgring lap record onboard | 7:05.298 on the Nordschleife! https://youtu.be/6Y2zZlXmcU8

@darekmistrz4364 Open diff + selective braking + so much power that you can lose traction even with the partial braking applied is as good as a real LSD if you don't mind the brakes heating pretty fast. A well implemented LSD can simply do the same thing with smaller losses (which means less heat, too).
2
I would say if you think that it's just a normal road where you have to stay within your own lane at all time, you can drive as fast as you would normally like on any other public road without speed limits. That includes going really slow if that's what you want.
2
So this is the brake setup this car should come from the factory?
2
7:15 GPS goes to forest...
2
That was some great driving!
2
I did notice it and I think the system was probably running with too little water because the temps got lower so fast. If you have system full of water, the total energy in the water prevents that quick cooling but if your system is not pressurized, boiling water into steam could explain rapid temperature drop to 100 °C.
2
VAG cars can activate mechanical steering lock only if you remove the key from the lock. Just turning it to off and on cannot activate steering lock.
2
That car was really thirsty! Assuming the fuel cauge was accurate, it was taking nearly 70 liters/100 km which is in the same class as Bugatti Veyron doing 400 km/h on straight. The engine sounds nice and there's no visible smoke in the rear view so it's hard to tell where the fuel is going.
