  43. I find the idea that a civilization that has colonized large areas of space to be able to remain silent to be such a huge assumption and reach that it might be impossible to exist. Let's imagine a species with hundreds of billions of members in a region of space. Let us also assume that the species is not a true hive mind since those do not exist on earth really. Instead, it is made up of individuals with their own desires and thoughts. Then the following things are probably true: 1) This space civilization might not be one civilization at all but many. One Nation might not even completely control its native solar system. These nations probably have wildly different morals and ideologies. If one of those decides to tell the universe where their international enemies are or that they exist themselves because one hippy alien is their leader, then silence is broken, and there is no guarantee that this will not happen again. 2) With billions of individuals, the probability of a group of them deciding at random to send alien memes with their GPS location into space for other aliens to see, is almost 100%. There might be a religion with 99 billion members that tells them to keep their race hidden, but then we have 1 billion who do not belong to that religion, and even if 900 million of those think that staying silent is smart, you have a pool of 100 million aliens who don't think so. And then is just the randomness present. Humans do random stuff all the time. Let's not assume Aliens don't do the same. This is also why I do not buy the "The aliens are just collectively deciding not to contact us" idea. Because let's be real, one might do exactly that just out of spite or for any other reason. I also don't agree with the idea that the aliens are just waiting for us to reach a point of mental enlightenment. Enlightenment is not passed down every generation. It has to be taught over and over again and humanity has failed in that regard repeatedly. Most humans on earth are not enlightened or smarter than their ancestors 200 years ago, so why assume the aliens are? Unless they genetically engineered themselves to be smarter, but then 1) and 2) apply again. One alien species is probably not a monolith.
