McAleenan testified that during a three-day pilot program, Border Patrol tested 109 people suspected of lying about the children traveling with them. According to the test results, 17 those people were not the biological parents of the children accompanying them. That's less than 1% of fraudulent cases and 15% of people lying about the children traveling with them. And you accuse me of emotional manipulation? 2. No, I don't expect the U.S. to care for the third world. But again, even if we don't take all of them (which I'm not advocating), there are more options than "either do this or you hate America." Those just happen to be the two most prominent options.

@ootmaster1 Setting aside the question of where you got "$600,000 per year," again, do you see me saying we should let them all in? No. But if they're fleeing Central American violence, sending them straight back is a bad idea. Even if we don't take them, sending them anywhere other than back home would be better.

@Karamazovfyodor That's not calling for open borders. That's her saying "Maybe our first instinct shouldn't be to jail families." We don't have to take them, but jailing them shouldn't be the only option.

If you want to stop the drug cartels, you need to stop whoever is funding and supplying them. A wall won't do that.

A wall won't stop the people who overstayed their visas. A wall won't stop human trafficking in this country. According to the founding president of the advocacy group Karana Rising, over 90% of survivors of trafficking are U.S. citizens. I could go on, but you get the idea.

@Karamazovfyodor No one is saying we should expect a 100% foolproof solution, but a wall will not have the benefits you think it will. Say, for example, you build the wall along the Rio Grande. Where, exactly? You can't build it on the Mexican side because they won't allow it. You can't build it on the American side because farmers won't have access to the water. You can't build it in the river because that would cause serious pollution.

@ootmaster1 Israel's border is, what, 100 or 150 miles? And Hungary sends some asylum seekers back to countries like Serbia, which they designated a “safe country." If their border walls work, it's not because of any factors we can replicate here. "Laws aren't going to stop things like that." And yet you think laws authorizing a border wall won't have the same effect?

@Karamazovfyodor I want a solution to the problem, but a border wall isn't it. Especially since the Israeli model wouldn't work here. Again, none of Israel’s border fences and walls cover anywhere near the distance of the U.S.-Mexico border and for the most part traverse far less difficult terrain, without a major river like the Rio Grande complicating the route. Europe had five border walls in 2014, built following the 1985 Schengen agreement amid concerns about immigration at the bloc’s external borders. By 2017, it had 15 barriers and a heavily patrolled maritime border. In particular, countries along the Balkan route built and extended border barriers. Tens of thousands of migrants still cross the Balkans to reach the EU each year, just in more dangerous conditions. Before the walls, migrants traveled in groups, with or without the help of smugglers. Now, paying a smuggler is the only way to avoid border guards and pass barriers. For several thousand dollars, smugglers bribe EU border agents, hide migrants in trucks, or just walk them across EU borders under cover of darkness. Not enough proof?
