  8.  @Hudsonrulez  When the city studied the economic effects of the Bloor bike lanes researchers found that people were spending MORE at local businesses than prior to the bike lanes. It is easier for pedestrians and cyclists to make quick stops or window shop than it is for drivers, who are more likely to drive somewhere, park, and just go to their destination, then leave.

  19.  @bradvp4339  But you have to compare the homicide RATE (i.e. homicides per 100,00 people). In 1991 the homicide rate was ~3.98/100,000, in 2018 it was ~3.55/100,000. The population of Toronto has grown by roughly half a million or 20% since 1991. And 2018 was an exceptionally high year, the average over the past 10 years has been 73 homicides per year. My point is that people who think Toronto has become some murderous hell hole, in contrast to some peaceful imaginary past, are not in touch with reality.

It's not Palestinians who took the land from the Cree, Anishinaabeg or Wet'suwet'en people, it was the Canadian and British colonial governments that did that.

Its so absurb how Stephen Holyday and Mark Saunders fill their diapers at the thought of bike lanes being extended on Bloor St. A study on the economic impact of the first phase if the Bloor Bike lane (from Avenue Road to Shaw Street found that the number of visitors increased after the bike lane was installed and visitors spent more time and money in the area. All of Mark Saunders objections are really about car traffic and dependence that he is projecting on bile lanes. "Think of the isolated seniors and people with disabilities" If they are isolated it is becuase some areas in our city aren't built to be safely accessible except by car.

  23. Isn't it ironic that the chief apologized for cops actually doing something humane? He didn't apologize for the way cops routinely surveil and harass protestors, or for using force to break up homeless encampments, or for his own role in the abusive and homophobic bathouse raids earlier in his career. Also, why does he mention doing every thing they can to protect the Jewish community, when the protestors were on a highway overpass?

It takes incredible levels of cognitive dissonance to be a driver surrounded by thousands of other single-occupant vehicles on the 401, DVP or other many streets without bike lanes across Toronto and think "this is the fault of bike lanes!" All with the full cooperation of the Ottawa Police Service. They got the most gentle treatment of any protest I've ever seen.
