EXACTLY! His family owns 52% of shares in George Weston Ltd (controlly shareholder of Loblaws) which pays a quarterly dividend of $0.66/share. Thats approximately $195 million last year for his family. His $11 million salary is actually chump change to him.

I appreciate the nuance of your conversation and I agree that the university as an academic institution for higher learning SHOULD be a place for dialogue. But the students' reason for the encampments is about the actions of the university as a corporate entity with billions of dollars to invest, that is not something that can be resolved in a seminar, lecture, or classroom.

"Theft" is a manufactured crime. When someone shoplifts from a big retailer it is a "bad" crime and the police talk very seriously. But when the employer steal the wages of employees its a ministry of labour problem. Try getting the police to give a sh!t if your boss steals your wages. How about mentioning that the value of wage theft (i.e. the various ways employers steal wages from employees) amounts to more than the value of all other forms of theft, burglary, shoplifting, and auto theft COMBINED.
3
@@metanomena The vast majority of grocery store customers are paying. These are massively profitable corporations, they account for theft in their pricing.
3
Oh no! Not TRESPASSING! That truly is the ultimate crime. So glad you've got your priorities straight. 🙄🤔

Permitting chronic homlessness to exist in one of the wealthiest countries on earth is a political choice, not some great unsolvable mystery. Its not about lack of resources, we know that governments would actually SAVE MONEY by eliminating homelessness. But the capitalist political parties (Liberals, Conservatives and yes the NDP) won't end homeless because it is one of the sticks that keeps capitalism moving. Every visible homeless person is a cautionary tale, the message is "take whatever crappy job you can, pay whatever exorbitant rent you can, and don't complain or you'll end up on the street.

This isn't actually a budget cut, the proposed budget is just less of an increase than TPS requested. The budget is still over a billion dollars and the largest item in the city budget
3
POLICE. DO. NOT. PREVENT. CRIME. Nor do they address the root causes of crime which is often related to poverty and lack of economic opportunities. If we want to prevent crime , and not flush tax dollars down the toilet, we should invest in social programs, affordable housing, and equitable economic development.

LOL Toronto city Council removed the parking mandate when John Tory was mayor. Olivia Chow was only sworn in last week.
3
Do you think the thousands of people who cycle to work (or run errands or shuttle kids) everyday, like myself, don't cOnTrIbUtE tO tHe EcOnOmY?
3
@laurabellinger5683 So is committing mass murder. Let's get our priorities straight. Why is the University so reluctant to divest?
3
@GeoffOverson Is sarcasm considered terrorism now too? I can't keep up. (That was me being facetious. I hope that is not also terrorism.)
3
Wow its like they went Canadian Tire and bought whatever tent was on sale. What a conspiracy! /s
3
LOL get a grip. Bet you've never been to Jane and Driftwood.
2
@spooky-scarecrow nobody is blocked from entering any building.
2
I am BEGGING more journalists reporting on Galen Weston's salary to mention that he is not just the CEO. HIS. FAMILY. OWNS. Loblaws. His salary is just a small fraction of what he is paid through stock dividends which was close to $200 million in 2022.
2
LOL you think statehood can just be "voided"?
2
@StellarSoundwave You can't be serious. A declaration of Independence is an aspirational statement, it is not legally binding. States cannot be voided. The United States is not void if it acts in a way that is contrary to its Declaration of Independence, and neither is Palestine.
2
Anti-genocide occupation.
2
@brando19872 Canada sends $$millions worth of "chartitable donations" and military hardware [edited] to Israel every year. Canada also supports Israel diplomatically by voting against or abstaining from UN resolutions that condemn Israel. Canada also attempts to auppress the BDS movement here which puts economic pressure on Israel. So there is reason to put political preasure on PM Trudeau nad other Canadian politicians.
2
georgeorwellsghost3833 I know it is hard to resist propaganda when we are so inundated by it, but the world wars were not about "freedom" they were about power and control of resources. The Canadian state had no problem with fascism in Europe until Hermany invaded poland and upset the balance of power. Also, do you think Germany was going to invade Canada?
2
@martinnikolov6649 Why would you drive downtown?
2
The students are on the right aide of history, just like students and activists who successfully campaigned for divestment from Apartheid South Africa in the 1980s.
2
Police don't stop crimes in progress. At best they show up four hours later to write a report
2
@ZenCorvus The Genocide Convention defines genocide as any of five "acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group." These five acts include killing members of the group, causing them serious bodily or mental harm, imposing living conditions intended to destroy the group, preventing births, and forcibly transferring children out of the group. Victims are targeted because of their real or perceived membership of a group, not randomly.
2
Why is the university so resistant to divesting from the military industrial complex which arms Israel? This should be an easy decision.
2
LOL why should someone wearing a symbol of PALESTINE go live in AFGHANISTAN? They're different places.
2
@Joe-by8jh JFC. Gaza and Afghanistan are 4000 kms apart. That's like saying Madrid and Moscow have the same religious symbols and value because both areas are nominally Christian.
2
@malaudisa If your experience of cycling in Toronto is limited to riding the Martin Goodman Trail or other MUP please STFU. There is nothing wrong with being a recreational cyclist but don't use your hobby as cover to advocate against bike lanes which keep cyclists safe.
2
@fluffyblanket1398 I am very sympathetic to your concerns about transit in Toronto. I have a 2y/o and 5 y/o and I know from experience how frustrating and nerve-wracking it can be to navigate the system while pushing a stroller when elevators don't work and detours can be inconvenient or non-existent. Which is why it is necessary to offer safe alternatives, including protected bike lanes. This summer I took my 5y/o to his weekly T-ball in a bike trailer along the Bloor bike lanes. It was great. And when he outgrows the trailer it would be great if we had a real network of protected bike lanes (not just painted lines) and safe streets where he could ride with me on his own bike.

They are protesting their university's complicity with the Israeli apartheid state though endowment investments and academic relations.

Pierre Pollievre is a career politician. He was first elected as an MP at age 25. He have enever had a job outside of politics. What does he have to show for it? What programs has he championed or bills passed that have improved people's lives?
2
@somebodysomewhere2277 I promise you that among ANY demographic there is some degree of criminal behaviour.
2
@joejoe-the-original Who said anything about playing on the roadway?
2
@bycrescentmoon8001 Aspirational!
2
That would be heaven.
2
LOL you okay bud? Nobody is forcing you to cycle year round but there were maybe one or two weeks last winter when there was enough snow to make cycling difficult. The solution on very snowy days should be to plow bike lanes just as we plow road and sidewalks.
2
Do you think police prevent crime by harassing teenagers?
2
ACAB. Glad an inocent man is free.
2
Oh no! Is sleeping in a tent an act of tErRoRiSm? Somebody tell the provincial parks!
2
Police don't prevent crime.
2
Oh no not trespassing! GTFOH
2
I am begging people not to fall for this copaganda and understand that the police budget has no relation to the actual "crime" rate because police don't actually prevent crime.
2
@IPendragonI McGill is a public university, saying the open lawns and quads are private property is just making weak excuses to crush protests which embarrass the university.
2
What do you think people do in the Toronto Zoo, or Central Park in NYC or Hyde Park in London, all bigger than High Park and all car free.
2
What hate is being spread?
2
@m.t.1616 Why is it so ridiculous? What hate has been spread? The ire of protestors has been targeted at the university and the state of Israel for their (in)actions, that's not "hate".
2
@Storyboardcinema-vp5ll PeaceKEEPERS don't go into active war zones, there has to be some sort of ceasefire and both sides have to agree to their presence. Israel wants the whole land, I don't think they'd allow peacekeepers.
2
These comments demonstrate that many people are very eager to swallow any copaganda and racist right-wing talking points about crime and immigration.
2
It is truly pathetic, but not surprising, that Mark Saunders would team up with Stephen Holyday, one of the most gormless losers to ever sit on Toronto City Council, to rail against bike lanes. People should be able to cycle safely everywhere that they can drive (except highways), including through the Kingsway. Mark Saunders says people in Etobicoke don't cycle, maybe because it it generally unsafe or unpleasant to cycle in most areas of Etobicoke. There is currently no East-West connecting route in Etobicoke between Lakeshore Blvd (the bike lane there is only partial and not very inviting) and Eglinton Ave! It makes perfect sense to put one on Bloor. More bike lanes encourage people to cycle instead of drive, which is good because it reduces traffic for people who have to drive. A economic study of the Bloor bike lanes further east also found that people were spending more at local businesses because, guess what? cyclist make more stops and spend more money than drivers.
