  4. Many of the ‘new Canadians’ are just temporary Canadians looking to cash in on the exchange rate. The Filipinos I work w will retire better than most any of their Canadian coworkers. They can buy a house back home for $30K. That isn’t even half a down payment on the average detached home in Calgary.

  6.  @Themiddleman416  A non-citizen couple at my work owns 4 investment properties in a sleepy college town where the housing issues are being felt immensely. My workplace is about 1/3 non-citizen, despite a stack of resumes in the office. That couple is selling the properties in order to buy a massive property back home. Not only are we driving up our cost of livings and diminishing the value of our labour by injecting consumer demand and labour supply into the economy wholesale, but we are creating god knows how many billions in remittances every year.

  8. HaoXiang Mei Stop accusing ppl of being selfish because they don’t agree with you about the costs of lockdown relative to those without. This isn’t the black and white issue you are pretending it is. Are you still working? If so, walk the walk, quit your job, and open up the post for somebody who will work without moralizing to others about their ‘lockdown’ woes. If not, then good luck to you when this is said and done, because when the CERB runs out we’ll see how everybody feels about the government’s decision to bait and switch their livelihoods into oblivion.

  19. This is ridiculous. They were on a month to month basis. If the new owner wanted to jack up the rent and find new tenants why shouldn’t they have been able to? How is this ‘wrong’, exactly. This woman and her family were in a tough spot, sure, but that is a risk that comes w renting. Instead of disrespecting property rights we should probably do more to deal w the housing issues. Endless immigration certainly isn’t helping.

  50. Why? It’s their house. You should be ashamed of yourself for thinking they shouldn’t be able to set terms and conditions for their own property. It belongs to them. Pets damage homes. I know this because I grew up having and loving pets, but I was responsible enough not to have pets while I was renting.
