  4.  @joshburke4083  That's not today's world, though. That's a strategy from 1991 - 2010. Current aircraft doctrine is about combating a resurgent Russia, and China. Hence the current panic to extend the ranges of jets operating from aircraft carriers - which have to operate well beyond the first island chain.

  5. Everyone seems to forget the South African border war. Probably the perfect example of a modern war, and the usefulness or uselessness of modern armour. The most important method to battlefield success was artillery, not so much the tank. If $3 million buys a tank, why not train 30 special forces?

  18.  @sgoell75  I'm not saying tanks are obsolete. They're just not going to be used in the first weeks of combat against China. By the time they're needed, the he army will be ready to fill the heavy armoured role. Marines should be the tip of the spear, and that's what's these procurement changes are about.

  19.  @sgoell75  ... Also, Matsimus forget to mention that the Marines will receive new equipment to replace the tanks, such as cruise missiles, anti-ship weapons and long range rockets - weapons which are much easier to hop from island to island.

  44.  @1quickster  and so did Australia, with the F-35. But it's a worse plane. And America expects our help in an Asian conflict. We won't have the edge without the F22, so America's policy of not exporting top technology will come back to bite them.
