For close range, lasers are very useful. I imagine it won't be too long before aircraft are armed with their own miniature CIWS, in the form of a laser or two.

I wonder if a spitfire-type WW2 aircraft could be armed with something like Sparrow missiles, which could be guided by AWACS...? With just some cheap electronics on board, solely for getting that missile to target.

@VisibilityFoggy I think we'd need something like that in years-long world war. Able to take off from dirt runways, and just act as missile-trucks for our more precious fighters.

@mickeyg7219 sure, I meant an AWACS "type" of craft. Outfit it with a different radar, and have the cheap prop missile-trucks acting as the teeth? Kind of like a manned version of the loyal wingman program. idk, it's an idea for an unlikely contingency. Not sure if the benefits would stack up against using drones instead, though.

Imo, if fully autonomous fighter-aircraft become a thing, that'll be the 'least' of our worries. Because for that to happen, AI will need to have matched the human brain in intelligence... And when (if?) that time comes, there'll be much larger issues for humanity than winning wars against other nations.

I don't understand missiles - why can't they manoeuvre during re-entry? Like can't they just add a small engine to the warhead?
