  3. I haven't watched yet, but if that part fixes that code, I'll be shocked. In 4 years at Nissan, I've never seen anyone replace that part. That code is usually caused by the cam position sensor.

  4. @9:25... Disconnect the injector or remove the fuel pump fuse. There's a few reasons you don't want fuel spraying into the cylinder while doing a compression check. I'm sure you know them. Ray, you know wire are a wear item. The resistance increases over time. If they're off anyways there' no reason not to replace them especially since they're cheap.

  5. First thing I check for a large leak is the gas cap. I've had more than one car come in with a large leak and when I went to check the cap, it was missing.

  6. Some of us who comment regularly, do so in the spirit of helpfulness. People can take or leave my advice. By offering it, they're given the choice of doing things the same way they've always done it, or try a new way. If the old way works better, do it the old way. Choosing between two options is always better than having one option. Been wrenching for 37 years, so sometimes I have good ideas. Also, sometimes my ideas suck.

  7. The thing I hate most about pulling out hoses like this... Putting the new one back in. @1:00:00... Please tell me you're not a "left foot on the brake" driver. So annoying to drive behind them. Brake lights constantly coming on even though they're not braking.

  10. Battery's only a year and a half old. People don't get that if you install a new battery with corroded/worn out terminals, you're dramatically shortening the life of your new battery. Corroded terminals increase resistance, which over works the alternator and kills batteries. Here in Las Vegas, where it's 120 in the Summer and gets down to 30 at night in the Winter, a new battery can last about 4 year if it's taken care of. It will last a year or so if it's not.

  12. This was definitely not just an Explorer issue. I had the factory Firestone FR480's on my '94 Mazda B4000 (Ford Ranger) and the LF tire de-laminated and sent the entire tread up into my rocker panel. It caved in the rocker panel and caused $3k worth of damage. Had to have my lawyer threaten to sue Firestone to get them to cover the damage.

  13. I think I'd try to get approval for the knock sensor while I'm in there. Probably only like $20. I'd also use a Mighty Vac to remove all of that oil and coolant from the valley. I think every shop has a "Stu". I used to have to lock my box when I went to lunch. I also has to be a dick and institute a "no borrowing" policy. People kept borrowing and not returning my tools.

  15.  @spacecoastz4026  That pan is designed for a gasket. Any time you see a pan with a raised area around the bolt holes, it uses a gasket. If it's smooth, it uses RTV.

  19. Most techs know that a bendix kicking out without turning is a sign of low battery amperage. A less scrupulous tech might try to sell you a starter just to sell work.

  21.  @PropanePete  Those races can be driven out. I do it all the time. Just need a sharp punch to get them started, then you can get your normal punch behind it. We have two flatbed trailers at the shop and I own my own 20' enclosed trailer. Our flatbeds get lots of miles, so I replace the bearings at least once a year.

  22. You should have one fan blowing in at the front of the shop and two fans blowing out at the rear of the shop. If it works for computer cases, it should work for the shop. @51:59... Guessing we had an incident involving "redneck loctite" (cross threading).

  25. You had a bad rep, or one you didn't have a relationship with. I've spent about $50k on tools with my rep, but he's been my rep for over 15 years. Most of that was in the first 10 years. Lately, I spend less than $100/mo. just because I have what I need after 30 years of turning wrenches. Despite the fact that I don't spend much now, because of our relationship, not only does my guy not hassle me on warranty stuff, he gives me free stuff. Just yesterday, he gave me a Limited Edition No. 7 ratchet in a presentation box.

  28. Cars sitting on the rack is why I refuse to start pulling a car apart until I have the parts in hand. At Nissan, even as a Master Tech, I had one rack. I've been burned too many times, having to drag my tool cart around, using the rack of whoever was off that day.

  29. This is the way I do it when installing new parts... After installing the upper tie rod, you adjust it's length so that when the pitman arm is pointing where it was when the steering wheel was straight, the RF wheel is straight. You then install the lower tie rod and adjust it so the left wheel is also straight. Once you finish and put it on the alignment rack, to adjust the toe, use the steering wheel lock to lock the wheel straight. Then adjust the upper rod to correct the RF toe. Then you used the lower tie rod to bring the LF into spec. The way you're doing it is how I do an alignment on a vehicle that's just coming in for an adjustment.

  30. I put a little grease and then wipe it off. This leaves a thin coat that just prevents rust and corrosion, but not enough to turn attract dirt and turn to mud.

Perhaps it's because we Americans feel we're owed something. If we can't get something by earning it, we feel we have a right to take it.

  35. Yeah, newer Chrysler's require you to register with Chrysler as a technician in order to unlock the gateway to gain full access to diagnostics. It just takes a few minutes to do, but you have to go to their website to do it. Costs $50/yr for the whole shop (16 devices, I believe). This is one of the reasons it's important to support the "right to repair" movement and to lobby your state legislators to pass bills preventing manufacturers from "locking" devices. Apple is the #1 culprit.

  36. I'm probably going to jinx myself, but I've never had to deal with a stuck Triton plug and I've done dozens. Just lucky, I guess. I always use anti-sneeze on plugs because steel plugs and aluminum heads. This is also why I just don't bother using a torque wrench on plugs. I go until seated and then add about a 1/4 turn. The exception being on plugs with crush washers. Those I do a 1/2 turn.

  37.  @jamiepatterson1214  the service had nothing to do with the switch. The service was regular maintenance. I never charged for turning on a valet switch. In fact, if that's all they were there for, I'd just do it on the service drive and show them the switch.

  39.  @jamram9924  I was a Nissan Master Tech for 4 years and there's no TSB, It's just a know failure point. Cam and crank sensors. I got really fast at setting up my scope to check them.

  44. @29:47... You have to start all of the manifold bolts just a thread of two before you can tighten any of them. The manifold needs to be able to move around to get that last one in. The real suck part of this job is having to retorque the header bolts in 300 miles if you don't use locks.

  45.  @jovangrbic97  On the 3M Scotch-Brite pads usually red is coarse, blue is fine and grey is ultra fine. On aluminum, I always use a carbide tipped scraper to get most off then use a grey ultra fine. On steel, you can use fine without damaging the metal. I only use coarse on surfaces that I don't mind taking off a little metal. For example, stuff I plan on welding.

  46. @11:00... Don't pull the relays while running a code scan. Pulling them could cause codes to set. I assume you're doing this diagnostic for content since every tech knows when a Chrysler product comes in with lost comms to multiple modules it's almost always the TIPM. Is it possible to be something else? Sure, but the first thing you check is the TIPM. Something in the TIPM caused those two fuses to blow.

  48. I used to run a new Cat 982 loader and it would regen at least once a day. There's a learning curve to loading trucks while the engine is running high idle during a regen.

  49. If I was in FL, I'd make an offer. As much as a like my little, tightly sprung, quick Fiesta ST... I also love the big ol' American V8 boats. There's something about a car with a V8 with 160 hp, a floaty suspension, 2 finger steering and no electronics. The car definitely needs a deep clean if he really wants to sell it. @7:57... Sounds like the bendix is sticking. The grease inside is probably all dried up. Just time for a reman. @19:20... Those teeth are what we Yanks refer to as "chowdered up".

  50. I agree on your assessment of flag bolts and nuts. I had a new guy come over and try to "help" me with bolt that was stuck in a flag nut. I was reverse ugga dugga'ing the bolt and he stuck his palm against the nut to hold it (no wrench, just his hand). Just as I was saying, "Don't do that, I got it", the flag spun. It took a chunk of meat off his thumb pad and broke a bone in his hand. He was out of work for 4 weeks. I usually throw those away and replace them with a C'lock nut.
