You'd think people would stop using white coats in their anti-sealing videos then, right ? 20 years and they're still implying and outright claiming that white coats are being hunted in the legal commercial hunt, the only purpose being the collection of donations - Like Paul Watson said himself in the 1978 CBC interview with Barbara Frum ! There's more to this than an emotional attachment. There needs to be hard evidence somewhere !
1
One can only guess who rated this childish rhetoric 3 thumbs up. Why do they think they're going to be taken seriously after cut & pasting such tripe ? As a joke I claimed environmentalists like to illegally fondle baby seals and his response was that it was a sexual comment. LOL !
1
Rigid bias. You are trying to impose a situation where it is impossible for the hunt to be humane and implying a conclusion that the EFSA document has addressed by claiming the current methods are acceptable. You complain about the minute amounts of seals that were not properly incapacitated and you dismiss all solutions to this problem. It takes hardly a second for another blow to proceed. Mountain out of a mole hill.
1
"Thats hiding!" From whom ? People who are there to film and observe get in and will not likely be refused a license. Sea Shepherd interfere and provoke behavior that isn't normally found at the seal hunt. They're just there to create these theatrical appeals for donations, while risking the safety of others - Including DFO officials. This is a non topic. People who think this is censorship have never studied history. IFAW's access is proof that no media controlling "regime" exists in Canada.
1
1987 - That's when the hunt for white coats became illegal. Not 1996. So the anti-seal hunt advocates you talk with are not the best source for information on this subject.
1
Your best bet is to use the "view all ### comments" at the bottom left of the video's main page. It's somewhat more sequential but yeah, it gets confusing when comments get beyond some point. I'll try to add a "XB70 said" summary but there are limitations in regards to the length of comments.
1
European Food Safety Authority document EFSA-Q-2007-118, published in December, 2007. It says that the killing methods are fine as it stands and that the amount of non compliance in regards to these methods can be corrected. It contains no condemnation of the Canadian seal hunt. But you will of course refuse to read it, just like all of your fellow protesters, going as far as claiming that this EU government document was paid for by special interest groups.
1
Fisherman ? Where ? Oh, I see. You're one of those people that like to assume things - Like the amount of seals that allegedly escape and die under the ice. It's called an estimate and the term "thousands" is quite vague. And note that it isn't in the "tens of" or the "hundreds of" thousands. We don't have actual figures and can't assume large numbers of seals died without their carcasses.
1
The voice over claims that people are not being issued licenses to view the commercial hunt. That wasn't a commercial hunt and from the footage i've seen on Youtube I seriously doubt people are getting their footage confiscated, as the voice over implied. People will continuously claim these seals are pups just to manipulate the viewer. I've already said these are "beaters" and the stats are available from the DFO, which is accountable by law.
1
What an odd comment seeing that i've already said that more were issued last year and having noticed that most were being used, the DFO didn't issue any this year. Didn't I tell you I didn't think this was a war, battle or game ? You're trying to start a two player solitaire here. Anyhow, you forgot that there's more to this industry than the sealers and these other people don't need sealing licenses.
1
yeah, and you guys want to control it. You don't like what someone says, you try to insult it away. It's disgusting.
1
The blink test or skull palpitation test was conducted on 33% of 149 seals they could establish a timeline on - On 169 seals. They may claim to have never seen the third procedure, bleeding, but then the couldn't establish a timeline for 20 seals. Then there's the fact that the activists failed to dismiss the claim that sealers are able to feel the damage caused by clubbing, the majority of seals having sufficient damage to their skull to render them unconscious or dead according to the EFSA.
1
Huh ? My face in what video ? I'm not on any video on Youtube. Most of my videos are scenic, nature and animal vids. I have no problem eating vegetarian meals. There are several great eateries here in Ottawa and i've encountered several excellent vegie burgers. I researched veganism and it isn't as viable as vegeterianism in Newfoundland and Canada's northern communities because of the active B12 deficiencies. There are no active b12 fortified vegan products except for a specific yeast prod.
1
Yeah, the comments are screwing up for me as well. I've had to repost several times. Argh. I'll try to figure it out. brb.
1
I suspect most of the anti side are impressionable youth that haven't read the community guidelines as terms of service. Kids that were indoctrinated and converted into beggars. They apparently don't understand that the spam option on comments are for comments containing commercial advertisements and links to unrelated videos and sites. They think the word "spam" means "unwanted information" and think nobody will get them kicked for abusing that feature.
1
4.2.2.1 concludes with this statement : "Therefore, the proportion of seals that were not killed by the first shot in the study of Butterworth et al. (2007) remains unclear". So the 82% rate is debatable. The Butterworth report also includes the following : "it was not possible to differentiate unequivocally between conscious responses and unconscious reflex activity". So the 16% rate is also debatable.
1
Oh so these were continuous, unedited videos devoid of leading information like dramatic music or voice overs/texts telling the viewer what to see ? Perception. People used to think the beheaded were still alive. They also tried to revive people with injuries that resulted in brain death. Why ? Because of the postmortem reflexes.
1
Go ahead. You can come back to this later. BTW, when you read IFAW's document you'll notice their lack of information in regards to when the seals they autopsied died and the resulting vague speculations in regards to how long it would take for seals to die from the specific injuries they observed in the seals. You'll also notice that they also only grouped the seals in three categories instead of four, the later being preferable due to the wide variations in the second group.
1
You are only claiming that something is happening and there is no hard evidence that these problems are so systemic that these cannot be corrected without a cessation of the commercial hunt. This rigid stance that the hunt must be stopped simply because these are all seal babies or similar emotional appeals will fail because as meat eaters the majority has accepted the death of animals for our consumption. The majority will always demand definite proof of cruelty because it's due process.
1
Well, I did mention that they should wait until full molt here. I guess you missed that. But then someone will always come around and say "that's only # days/weeks old". Animals have their own life cycle and in comparison we are quite beyond childhood when we sever our ties to our parents and fend for ourselves. And then there's the fact that the majority of seals are left alone in Canada. That only a small percentage of seals are hunted, in limited areas.
1
The possibility of concealment is not proof of concealment. So, you're trying to imply guilt by profiling. Concealment of drugs, a weapon or crime was assumed by default against members of specific races in the past. But society has progressed beyond this prejudicial behavior. Innocent until proven guilty applies to every alleged illegal activity.
1
If it were their position, you'd think it would pop up in the media outlets, huh ? Isn't it strange that it doesn't and that the sealers themselves claim the opposite from 1996 ? And isn't it strange that the anti-sealing sites are still claiming the DFO are still blaming seals for the cod problem ?
1
It's an estimate in which people misinterpret the word "loss". There's no assumption of death on the part of anyone but the activists. You claimed they were all mortally wounded.
1
You know, wouldn't a more obvious question to pose of me be if I had supported the hunt of white coats ? I think it should be pushed further, until full molting. I support the white coat ban and heavier fines. But I will not stand idly by and have American lobby groups obtain political influence with conjecture in my country and Europe. We're fine with the SPCA and their legislative controls. And we've had enough of groups like that of the Coalition Of Fair Lumber Imports.
1
You're just focusing on the two week old pups when in reality most of the seals that are hunted are significantly older, regardless of "desirability". Seal pups are no all born at the same time so the hunters can't just focus on two week old pups. BTW, haven't you noticed that the seal hunted at the start of the video was a "beater" ? And where the hell were they ? The commercial areas are quite distant from land so these were probably Inuit.
1
80% is quite the large estimate seeing that the commercial hunt is limited to several specific geographical locations in the Gulf of St. Laurence described in Part IV of the Maritime Mammal Regulations found in the Fisheries Act. And you're assuming that the DFO wouldn't address a significant drop in newborns by limiting the hunt further.
1
Oh so you just didn't paint me as a person that enjoys watching seals being clubbed ? You only offer possibilities in my regards that fit your agenda. You vilify as a response when it isn't a response at all.
1
"You can put me as a person down all you like....It doesn't offend me. I know what kind of person I am and have nothing to be ashamed of." Don't worry. I'm not offended by your cliches either. I've been on the net for a looooong time. I'm just puzzled as to why you think flinging insults at a person would make them more receptive. "Buy my stuff, you bastard" doesn't sound like good marketing and that's what activists have been presenting in Canada and Europe. And they think it's working ?!
1
Only 206,000 harp seals on a population of over 6 million were hunted this year. They are therefore not "killing their biggest ally". Seals eat pretty much whatever comes along, including cod and their food. They're not picky, they prolific and the impact of the hunt of their species is negligible.
1
From "Sealing begins in St. Lawrence" by Campbell Clark, published March 29th, 2008 via the Canadian Press Service : "Yesterday, federal fisheries officials waited half a day before issuing observer permits to activists and journalists, handing them out after noon, when the weather made flying in helicopters almost impossible" The regulations is regards to history and intent was amended into the maritime mammal regulations in Feb 2008. (cont)
1
You forgot seals also eat what cod eat and they also eat other fish and seafood that we eat. Have you read the DFO information on nuisance seals ? They also get into nets and lobster traps in some places. They may be cute but they can be responsible for some serious damage.
1
You're still trying to nitpick your way out of this... You conveniently assume everything's a lie so that the other person does the work. Well, i've read the IFAW report. I've read the CVMA report. I've read the government commission reports. I've read the EFSA reports. I've read the press releases. And you know what, you can call it all hearsay until you're blue in the face. All it takes a one quick Google and your dance is dead.
1
You got a notice of my response, didn't you ? If I wanted to play this little game you're accusing me of, I would have responded in a manner where you wouldn't have received a notice. That's easy to do.
1
"You should be ashamed as a man who condones it." I'd consider this a knee jerk accusation. "If you took anything I have said that way then perhaps its the morality of all this that that may be struggling within you that caused you to take it as such." LOL! Classic psychobabble ! My turn ! You are actually lying about being impervious to "put downs" because you do it yourself as a defensive measure ? Or is it your way to attempt to control the conversation ? Or perhaps it's both ? FUN !
1
They managed to get footage to convince you, so what's the problem ?
1
Orange juice has hardly any acidity and I seriously doubt the resulting ocular damage would surpass that of direct exposure to butyric acid. And then there are the fumes... Maritime law stipulates that ships can only be boarded with permission from the captain (or a representative of the captain) or in respect to a warrant by an internationally recognized law enforcement authority. They could have sent the Royal Australian Navy or one of their national volunteer coast guard/patrol ships. Hmm.
1
Guess who's back under ISealHuntInfoCanadaI ? What gave him away ? On April 30th he had previously posted a video containing the very same description as one of his current videos, word per word. I noticed it a few minutes ago.
1
This video is not the virgin mary of videos. These so called facts are debatable and one doesn't need to be a sealer to do it. It didn't stop IFAW, did it ? If you think I will be easily swayed by an edited video of people providing opinions, in a manner that disregards all that i've read from both sides, then you're living in a fantasy land where law is superseded by emotional conjecture.
1
It's been the same routine for years. The stats are posted but they are never acknowledged by the protesters, most of which dismiss them with more pictures of white coats. They act like it these stats couldn't possibly be right simply because seals are cute and they think they're seeing cruelty in videos that could have been filmed anywhere at anytime.
1
(cont) The Feb 2008 amendments that resulted in the cries of censorship were in regards to people that DO NOT hold observer's licenses. They are now limited to one half a nautical miles away from sealing activity by subsection 33.(1) and subsection 33.(2). IFAW flew in early without a license and they weren't charged with anything. Why ? Because IFAW respects the conditions, as does Greenpeace and other members of the media.
1
Well, it's not supposed to be romantic. It's a job for these people. They aren't getting rich off of it but they need the income during the off season. They're mostly fishermen but no, they aren't so numerous as to justify a boycott of Canadian seafood. I don't get why guys wear fur. It's tacky. It makes them look like pimps or 70's porn stars. But i've got leather goods. Not that much though.
1
Yay - Another obtuse fairy tale ! How incredibly dense could a slaughterhouse employee be to accept claims from the anti-sealing activists after being subjected to PETA propaganda for so long ? Some PETA members will always imagine cruelty in slaughterhouses just like the seal activists with always see things in sealing videos by default. You're trying to appeal to me in an manner that isn't objective in order for me to subscribe to bias. No thank you.
1
But should we assume that a significantly large percentage of strikes have been compromised ? These is no evidence substantiating this and activists have never reached a consensus in regards to what the solution should be. Hunters are not limited to one blow or one shot. They can correct the accuracy of the strike but it appears that some activists don't want rifles to be used and/or repetitive blows. Not because of science but because of misconceptions in regards to postmortem reflexes.
1
This report simply reflects the inability of the activist sponsored studies to establish significant probabilities. They used limited amounts of subjects and observations and had of course been required to concede that it may not be representative. You obviously frequented sites that established unrealistic expectations in regards to these reports - Where claims that these were definite proof were overstated to exaggerate the activist's progress.
1
Speaking of logging in western Canada, another unelected American special interest group hurt that industry by imposing an illegal levy for years. It cost that industry 5.3 billion, even though the levies were deemed illegal, over and over in the international tribunals, including the WTO. We only managed to get 4 billion back because we were threatened with more appeals. And now these Americans are threatening the Pacific fishery because of a bunch of sealers on the opposite side of Canada.
1
Oh yes, I forgot. I thought i'd give you some details about myself, seeing that you asked so nicely... Well, my profile, that you quite obvious read and got frustrated with because it didn't give you ammunition, is pretty much it other that I think I forgot to add my interest in Copyright law, international trade, human rights, and ANIMAL CRUELTY. Yes, I am against animal cruelty but I don't bend over forwards to prove it. A dotted I and crossed T is more efficient.
1
I guess we should be banning the distribution of Helter Skelter by the Beatles because some hick decided to use that for an excuse for his behavior too. I don't see any agreement inbetween PETA and your KFC, like KFC Canada had signed a few months back. But feel free to take the word of one of you animal abusing criminals...
1
It's a commercial hunt operated by sealers who are also fishermen outside of the seal hunting season.
1
BTW, i've taken pretty good footage at more than 50 meters away with the hand held 20x Optical Zoom video camera I use for my vids here on Youtube. With their resources they could easily afford HD cameras with higher optical zooming capabilities. 50 meters is nothing.
1
So we should just be subscribing to anything that someone claims is valid, out of desperation for data ?
