  9. Actually, what he said was somewhat different to The Sun report - but given their standard of journalism, what does one expect. When the UK leaves the EU it leaves the Open Skies Agreement and will have no landing rights in Dublin, Paris or anywhere else in the EU. This is why Easyjet has set up an Austrian subsidiary. You should be negotiating a new arrangement now, but the Tory party is too busy tearing itself apart to notice. This is what Varadkar mentioned in his press conference, but The Sun journalist, decided he was saying something that would sell more papers.

But then it is also the case that there are Brexiters who will simultaneously hold the opposing truths that the EU is turning into a Superstate AND that the EU is falling a part. I guess that is what living in the Brexit bubble creates, and in fact has informed the UK negotiating position: Remember when you were told with almost certainty that the EU would come begging? Remember when you were told that the timetabling would be 'the row of the summer'? Remember when you were told that we wouldn't pay a thing? Apparently, the Brexit project, based as it is on some outdated 19th century binary nationalism and fuelled by notions of returning to some mythical prie-EU Idyl, is worth the price no matter the cost. The difference is, Brexiters will not acknowledge ANY cost for Brexit, dismissing any discussion as project fear. Apparently, Brexit will wreck the European economy but no cost will be acknowledged for the British economy by Brexiteers. 'Brexit Doublethink'. Why you think the EU can negotiate with a government that is still negotiating with itself, is not clear from you post. The EU will not undermine the SM or the CU in order to meet the needs of an incoherent English nationalism. Expecting it to do so is stupid. Brexit is stupid.

  27. Of course trade between Ireland and Britain is 'a thing'. Ireland, the 6th biggest beef exporter globally, exports 50% of it to the UK; the UK sells twice as much stuff to the Irish than it sells to China, Russia, Brazi and India combined.

It begs the question as to why people like you parrot the old Brexit line that any deal with the EU could be 'simplest deal in history'. It is a remarkable exercise in Doublethink. The Japanese know how to negotiate: their expectations are realistic, they understand the limitations within which the EU is negotiating and they don't think they are special. I assume you think that no British jobs will be lost because of Brexit? This would be logical in the mind of a Bexiter - only the EU will lose jobs, while the UK will be immune to reality. 3 million jobs in a market of 400 million is worth the sacrifice to protect the Single Market and the Custom Union. 'Project fear' is in the process of becoming reality, and this will reach its zenith when you exit without a trade deal - the only country in the world without one, as far as I know. Have you begun hording food yet?

The UKs demands are not conducive to a deal, and your argument fails to acknowledge that Canada and Japan were never members of the EU with economies that are closely integrated with other EU states. Furthermore, the UK does not want a deal like the Norwegians have because the UK does not want to cough up any cash for their enhanced third country access, nor do they want a deal like the Canadians have because the Canadians don't have enough market access...the UK wants to dictate its terms without regard to the values of the EU or existing EU treaties - in two years. Oh and it wants out of the ECJ - but not out of the aviation agreements that are underpinned by it etc. Finally, because the UK is still fighting with itself over what type of Brexit they voted for in June 2016, the EU has nobody to negotiate with. How is it the EUs fault? Do you people take not responsibility for anything now? It is too late for a realistic deal now. It is likely now the the UK will leave without a deal or with some sort of last minute fudge that leaves it as an actual vassal of the EU. Any talk of the consequences of a no deal Brexit is of course taboo. Brexit is stupid.

  31. All countries in the EU have had economic difficulties since joining, but all countries have a higher standard of living today than they had before EU membership. The Greeks lied about everything and should never have been admitted to the EU never mind the Euro, the Italians have been nursing a huge national debt since before they joined the Euro, and Cyprus was exposed to the Greek collapse and eurozone crisis Spain, Italy and Cyprus all had growth rates higher than that of the UK in 2017. France has a higher GDP per capita than the UK, while the Italians are just behind the UK. Why do these countries not want to leave? Why do the Greeks not want to leave - they almost begged not to be thrown out of the Eurozone. Unlike the UK, none of these countries are planning to leave the EU. One wonders what you point is... 'Did you watch the World Cup and see all those people cheering on their country's teams? That's the "nationalism" you seem to despise, and no amount of self-serving EU political dogma will change it.' I seem to despise, it do I? I love it. I love people celebrating their national identity in peace and friendship. The EU does much to foster the notion of maintaining national identity in this manner asking only that members citizens adopt a common EU identity alongside it. The English lack the confidence to entertain such a notion and have instead demonised the entity in order to distract from decades of bad economic and social policies. The idea that the membership of the EU is a challenge to national identity is as ridiculous in the context of the UK where national identities survive despite also sharing British identity. Poland and Hungary don't define the EU. Every member of the EU has its beef with the bloc, but the UK is the only country planning - or not planning actually - to leave. Apparently, Brexit will be a disaster for the EU, while the UK will remain unscathed if everyone would only just believe in it enough. Are you stocking food and medicine yet? Brexit is stupid.

  41. Northern Ireland is in the Single Market and it is governed by rules. The UK will obey those rules, as the UK signed up for them. A recent poll (October) conducted by the University of Liverpool indicates strong support for the NIP in Northeren Ireland, even among the unionist community.

  43. Clearly this is false. if the Irish have made a success of Brexit is clearly because it ceased riding in the back of the UK. If it had done as you suggest, its economy would as disappointing to the Irish as the British economy is to the British. Ireland has reduced its exposure to the UK economy and continues to do so. The EU is not bitter you are leaving. It is merely watching on the sidelines as the Tory party wastes time fighting with itself instead of negotiating with the big boys. That wasting of precious time is resulting in frustration.

Can you point me towards the reports pointing towards an Irish exit of the EU being a 'distinct possibility'? I would be very curious to read it.
