  1.  @gkky_  nah, the car subdivision of SAAB never sold or made any vehicles suitable or intended for army service. SAAB Scania made and sold plenty of semi trailer trucks and SAAB Aero, well they still have a 70+year monopoly on Swedish combat aircraft, rockets and guided munitions.

No air defence covers all sectors at once with enough munitions to stop a battalion or brigade level air drop. Especially not if the drop craft is following a similiarly numerous wave of CAS drones carrying Electronic warfare suites and anti-radar munitions.

In the Swedish army, the Carl Gustaf m/48 replaced man portable mortars right off the bat and in 1958, the CG got it's iconic tag team squad level asset in the FN MAG built under licence as the Ksp m/58. Each infantry squad getting one CG and one FN MAG and, once LAWs became a thing, each rifleman was supposed to carry two m72LAWs, then in the 90ies to present day, the riflemen are supposed to be able to bring a single AT4 or NLAW each, all stored in or on their AFV when not on foot. Lowest level indirect support is 12cm mortars, either towed in the home guard militia, or as the twin tube Mjölner mortar CV90 (think better, non amphib Bradley style IFV chassi) with a twin tube assisted loading mortar in a frag protected semi-turret capable of 6 shell MRSI

Yup, this system both mounted on humvees or, better yet, install the turret with a small diesel generator in a modified standard shipping container for defending critical infrastructure could be a good idea, then plonk a Finnish NEMO mortar container within the Avenger containers envelope and you'll get 12cm mortar support out to 8km too

  23.  @bartdekoning6047  the sub systems quotes you use are for the A version of the 9040, those all got upgraded to the stabilized B variant in the early '10s, and all 9040 in service currently are afaik upgraded to the C version (addon armor, fully stabilised sights, commanders thermal periscope, fighting compartment climate control, digital FCS & commanders tac display with data link) and the D version upgrade kits are in production.

  24. The sound of SAAB 37 Viggens is one for me, along with the rumble of 105-152mm coastal artillery at about three miles distance without any answering pieces. It's the sounds of a guaranteed freedom from my childhood when the Airforce, where an uncle served before he got to old to fly combat planes and retired to civilian airliners, and the local coastal artillery regiment my dad served at had firing drills at the training fields and turreted fixed battery forts around the community, at the easternmost tip of an Island in the middle of the Baltic, closer to Moscow, and the ever present shadow of the USSR over the occupied Baltic states than to Copenhagen. Funnily enough, I visited an airshow a couole of years ago where a Swizz F/A-18 visited and the sound of it as it flew over as I walked towards the parking lot made me instictively twitch and I could only just refrain from diving head first for the nearest visible cover... I didn't expect that impulse. On the other hand, my country doesn't use any twin engine combat planes and never has, so it's sound was completely 'wrong' to my comfort sounds.

I suspect part of this joint effort stems from the BAE Buying Bofors industries a couple of decades back as Bofors, Dynamit Nobel and Hägglunds & Sons are the three Swedish companies responsible for Swedish AFV and heavy weapons development since WW2. Most notably, the Swedish improvements and modifications of both the Centurions (Strv. 81, 101, 102, 104 & 105 prototype) as well as the Leopard 2s (Strv. 121 & 122)

  34.  @ninus17  the downside with using double filters is that you reduce the effectiveness of the de-fogging design purpose of having an inner mask with inlet valve on the opposite side to the inlet valve of the filter side. Swedish army gasmasks use the same filters and flow principles with a different inlet/outlet valve, drinking straw and speaking membrane blank design.

  41. In the Swedish army, it's the gunners assistant who lifts the belt and changes the barrel. The gunner just orders barrel change and flips the safety bolt to safe. We also use MG3 style 49rnd modular steel belts instead of STANAG m13 desintegrating links.

Simon Barabash the strategical plans in place assumed soviet invasion despite neutrality ad Sweden is just too strategically important in order to open up alternative routes to the north sea and tactical movements in the southern Baltic sea. It is also a strategic roadblock for strike aircraft from both WP & NATO. Basically the strategy was based around trying to sink as much soviet troop transports as possible using submarine deployed ship mines, diesel-electric attack subs, packs of fast anti-ship missile boats, strike aircraft and both fortified (nbc-resistant or proofed) and mobile coastal artillery while mobilizing as much as possible of about 12% of the Swedish population as pre-trained conscripts in the armed forces alone in order to counter-attack inevitable bridge heads and fight a nation wide delaying action that would seamlessly transition into a semi-organised guerilla war until foreign military intervention could be recived or the soviets decided to cut their losses and bugger off on their own. Every phone book issued in Sweden during the cold war had a section on "If the war comes" and the message it stressed the most was "Every statement advocating or demanding cessation of resistance is to be considdered false" Basically every Swedish citizen was expected to take on the same mantle as the 70+yo individual japanese imperial soldiers who ran their own guerilla wars in the south pacific and wouldn't stop until someone managed to drag their even older COs out of retirement homes to order them to stand down 50-60years after VP-day.

  46. What sizing systems does the UK vs CAF vs US army use? Swedish armed forces uses height+mass in kg for uniform, foot length in mm for boots, all sizes in 5unit increments and sizes 1-7 for underwear (size6~XL) and yellow, red, green, blue and brown rim on socks. Brown rim=280+mm boots. Btw, you should try to find a set of Swedish m90P pants (Tanker pants) and a regular F or P jacket, the P jacket is short waisted, the F is long for regular field infantry and the P set is insulated (for arctic tank drifting), has pockets for full access when sitting and padded knees and elbows (for proper reverence of the machine spirit)
