  6. The costs of environmental damage and climate change will rapidly overwhelm the world if the use of fossil fuels is not curtailed promptly, and lead to its demise anyway. So, I suspect that the switch to renewable energy sources plus backup from nuclear power will come very soon, once business understands that there are huge profits to be made from this. There is plenty of space in the interior of China for solar panels, and I don't think China Inc. will be slow to exploit this opportunity to make money.

According to a Chinese friend of mine, the authorities are taking these extreme actions under the 'zero covid' policy because nobody dares to do anything that might result in them loosing their job, especially the most senior officials. They are all terrified by Xi, and what he might do to them if they fail. They dare not tell him that the disease is now endemic in the world, and thus impossible to eradicate.
