They are not Legislation, which takes precedence over Common Law, nor are they order of the monarch, which takes precedence over both. As part (but not all) of the Common Law was decided by Judges on The Kings (or Queen's) Bench effectively making judgement on behalf of a petition to the king, it is law insofaras legal precedent should be followed, unless the facts distinguish the case under review

  17. close. thought McDs Idea of Bacon is not what we get at our local fryburger vans at the car boot sales. A Bacon sarnie on white bread ( or a roll (barm)) fried egg and red (or brown ) sauce at 8am is quite a weekend tradition. (onions optional)

  24. There is a lot of (negative) comparision between the South and the North. Even by 1975 Stockport had lost most of the textile mills and similar and the permanent smoke and fog that created the winter smogs ( German AirForce in WW2 - we tried to bomb the railway viaduct but we couldnt see it), had gone , and now just within 5 miles of the town centre one is into (green belt protected) the western hills of the Pennines / Peak District. In London go five miles south of the outer towns and while there is greeness (a little on the North Downs) it is more forested or flat heathland, there is a quite a difference in the mix of grass / tree cover .

  25. slightly off topic as it is wired comms rather than wireless. I have GPO info on "System X" - One of the BT Digital Switching call systems (was it only for voice or did data/telex services use it too. Technically its under the official secrets act , I wondered if the spec allowed for govt call monitoring/routing infomation, and were there any chips etc in the circuitry for the scrambled govt comms lines and for again call recording and so on (Like supposedly chinese tech in modern CCTV/Mobile Phones etc).

  31.  @lexington476  The GPO licenced even the first radio stations (and the licence to own a recieving set / later Television Sets). Marconi had to have a licence for the first broadcasts from Chelmsford, and later Savoy Hill London. Baird had trouble getting licence for his early TV broadcasts , again in Hastings, Savoy Hill and Selfridges in London.

  34. we have /had worse in the UK. Ringway should have done a quick shot of the wedding cake town hall up the hill. The buildings had to fit in the change in elevation height which is quite quick from the valley of the river mersey as well as avoiding a number of underground cave systems. about 800 yards east of the building footprint was a site the Romans chose as a defensible castle ( the bigger military camp was another 2 miles south east on ground that was more favourable to supply by road from the south )

  37.  @Ayrshore  Sometimes you cannot sense movement , or lack of ,at approaching speeds. IF the radar, when working, stopped the lane as default , and operators had to clear the stop that would be better.

He wanted to save and collect chimneys, was a bonus when transmitter / repeater business came along needing high things, as the brickwork still needs maintenance (pointing and oiling the brickwork to prevent frost damage and seed/weed ingress
