I don't think he really cares. Which is what makes this so dangerous.

If you read the The Fifth Risk by Michael Lewis you start to realise that Trump actually has no idea what he's doing. Which, in itself, is terrifying. Watch out for Musk's rise here though, that's what we really need to keep an eye on.

I like Gary Stevensons idea of 1% wealth tax on net assets over £10 million valuing assets like property, businesses, and art. That'd be a good start. As far as valuation, where there's a will there's a way. It's a cop out saying that it can't be done because it's hard though. For sure.

I think a lot of this is because a hobby is not about monetary gain. If, for example, you take a hobby ( saying music, art or a craft ) that you love, gain some success and then try and turn it into a full time job ( or it turns itself into a full time job ) The dynamics of that "hobby" have now change completely. Suddenly it's no longer something you do for fun it's something that you have to do to make a living. And it becomes a chore. Even more so if someone spots your skill and then employs you in their business. Suddenly it's no longer your hobby, it's their dream and what was fun now also becomes a chore. I've seen this happen quite a few times with friends who've monetised their hobbies. As soon as you try and monetise it the dynamic completely shifts.

“A civilization is measured by how it treats its weakest members” So yeah, we need a welfare state.

Brexit supporters will still blindly argue that this was somehow great for the UK and a moment to be proud of. They'll never admit that this was a mistake. And that is a problem in itself.
20
Entering? This has been happening since the Friedman Doctrine. "The Social Responsibility of Business is to Increase Its Profits." Now we're just in a world or self serving Private equity and rents.

One of the issues in central London ( I live in west ) is that utilities company contractors such Virgin Media, TalkTalk, BT etc dig huge trenches in our roads and don't fill them properly so you end up with this patchwork of road and therefore potholes. Our street was completely resurfaced ten years or so ago and it's been dug up so many times since it's now just a mess. It's completely uncoordinated and done on the cheap. Everywhere in this city it's the same story. I can imagine this is the same everywhere in the UK too.

Not when there's people like the Duke of Westminster owning large swathes of London and paying zero inheritance tax on £9bn inheritance. I mean, that is insane.
19
@ why shouldn't they, because it pushed the price of housing though the roof that's why, all to appease a voting demographic. Also are you really trying to say that people on benefits do very nicely here. I mean, that's straight out the Daily Mail playbook of utter nonsense tbh.
18
The world has become too fast paced, we're constantly overwhelmed and can't keep up with the changes, the 24 hour news cycle, always online, technology constantly bombarding us with information. Constant doom-mongering. Most people literally can't keep up. You could really blame the pace of technology. I mean, we've always had anxiety, it keeps us alive; fight, flight or freeze. It's when your general level of anxiety is constantly overwhelmed it becomes a problem.
17
I own shares, ETF's and bonds. I can't physically hold any of them. They're all electronic.
16
You have Thatcher to thank for that.
15
Town centres have been dying for decades now.
14
Thing is though a lot of people will vote reform ( as they did with Brexit ) as a protest vote, they won't even brother to read their manifesto. Turkeys, Christmas and all that.
13
I grew up in a Northern factory ( and ex mining ) town where there was a distinct class divide between managers and workers to the point where some workers would actual reject a promotion up to management level because it was seen as "going to the other side." The workers who did "go to the other side" seemed to turn into absolute controling pricks that people hated too. It was almost expected you took on that role. A self fulfilling prophecy if you will. Workers didn't respect management, management didn't respect workers. It was a strange culture for sure, but I'm sure it's one that's not limited to the North of England.
13
If people keep constantly hating on Labour then this is what we'll have here in a couple of years too. This crap is already knocking on our door. On another note Musk being brought into this is terrifying.
12
@joepaluka9031 Reducing the power of the state would hand that power to corporate entities. Unless you see something else happening here?
12
After reading project 2025 I wouldn't use the word sad. More like terrifying.
12
Pensioners are the group who have done the best out of anyone over the last few decades.
11
I'm concerned about both.
10
Blame Thatcher for this, she started the ball rolling.
10
@davidmcculloch8490 Do they though. Brexit was a country splitting vote, it wasn't solely about the EU, it was also a populist protest vote aligned with national identity, and political alienation. Even if people now think it was wrong for economic reasons they won't admit it.
9
@stevereilly It's her legacy, you can't look at the future without understanding the mistakes of the past.
9
@Build_Secrets It is a tax on rich landowners, it closes down a huge tax loophole. It just needs administrating properly. Sure the rich are going to argue that it's regressive and will do the opposite of what's needed, they want it shut down.
9
The greens couldn't run a bath.
9
Betteridge's law of lunatics.
9
He'd just say no, I'm going to make American great again.
9
Yeah. they want you to buy.
8
@dna9838 "Think people are getting fed different content. " Of course we are, by algorithms.
8
@seewhatifound Agreed. Labour have sought wealth from rich landowners and yet they get attacked for it because said rich landowners can shout louder than anyone else. People want change here, but they don't want to support it when it happens. Honestly this country is a parody of itself.
8
@Build_Secrets I know a family with a ton of land, a huge hall and a wedding reception business who are definitely not farmers yet are going ape and protesting this, sure. What you're hearing here, as per anything Labour is trying to do at present, is a ton of noise from the rich who absolutely do not want to pay their way and are swinging the rhetoric their way.
8
Labour have pledged a lot of money to fix this problem. Interesting that this is not being mentioned here though.
8
It did, but more the 80's than 70's. There's a book called "Barbarians at the Gates" about the fall of RJR Nabisco that gives a detailed account of how this toxic LBO culture started in the US. Definitely worth a read.
8
@glykolyse8076 You won't get one.
8
@ That stock of social housing went back into the private sector and was never replaced. This is one of the reasons we are where we are now.
7
You're referring to World War I debts, not World War II. Those WW1 debts were suspended in 1931 due to the the Great Depression. The debts are considered a historical issue, they're over 100 years old and not an active financial matter.
7
@damianbutterworth2434 If we keep bashing labour then we'll have leave a vacuum for a party like Reform to walk straight in. That's my prediction for 4 years time. Need to be careful here.
7
It'll happen here too if we're not careful. Plenty of populism right here.
7
@blame.soross equality is out of control so let's rebalance the system.
7
Iceland's population is only 400K, you can't even begin to compare it to the UK. A lot of people lost everything too.
7
He's not stupid, that's a misconception. But it's also what makes him even more dangerous.
7
@dna9838 I couldn't tell you how the algorithms actually work to be honest ( as I don't program them ) But personally I watch all sorts as I believe to form an accurate opinion you need to see all sides of the argument ( and not just hang out in echo chambers reinforcing your own belief system, ) and that in turn feeds me lots of cr!p I don't want to see. I also know the algos are skewed towards feeding you negative crap too because that's where the clicks live. But that's a whole other conversation.
7
Starmer hasn't said anything about removing her though, Muprhy is just making up his own rhetoric. Again.
7
There's a whole House of Commons library section on the AI debate, of course they're thinking this through.
7
@marumaru6084 You really think that Brexit had nothing to do at all with what's going on now. Wow.. just wow!
7
Well get the same here if we're not careful. We're already going down the populism route.
6
Starmer spoke to both Trump and Zalensky last night and put out a statement saying: "He retains unwavering support for Ukraine" Come on now, keep up.
6
Shares in popcorn go though the roof.
6
