@MysticalJessica Your thoughts echo mine precisely. I even thought that since the US was telling everyone that Russia was going to attack, Putin would be stupid to carry it out even if they had planned to do so. We were wrong.
However, in one way, Ukraine may have forced Putin's hand. When Russia stole Crimea back in 2014 they failed to capture the North Crimea Canal, which runs from the Dnipro River (just behind the Nova Khakovka Dam) to Crimea. It supplies something like 85% of the water used in Crimea these days for industry, agriculture and human consumption. Ukraine blocked the canal in 2014 and, even with severe water use restrictions, water levels in the Crimean reservoirs dripped from 100% in 2014 to just 7% in January 2022. At that rate, Crimea would have run out of water by mid-summer last year. Putin would have lost face because he would had to negotiate with Ukraine. So, like the imperialistic despot he is, he invaded instead.
