@Edax_Royeaux Canada has not "belonged to Britain" since the British North America Act of 1867, and this was further reinforced by the Statute of Westminster in 1931. And we have never been part of America, if you are referring to the United States. We do what we want, when we want. The Queen is nominal head of the country in name only.

I would say that part of the reason the British were willing to relinquish their colonies after the end of WW2 was past bad experience with the American Revolution and their relatively good experiences with Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The British learned from experience that if people want independence then it is very hard to stop them, and there will be fewer hard feelings if you let them go their own way. The French lacked this experience, and suffered for it, while the Dutch were pressured by the international community and more or less dragged kicking and screaming to the table to sign agreements with the Indonesian government. Time Ghost did a very good series on the Indonesian War of Independence.
